So it looks like Apple has bowed to Change.org again. Only this time, it might just be for a good cause. Maybe.
The petition was organized by Ben Crowther, a student who says he became concerned after realizing for whom the Christian Values Network raises money. Crowther (and the Southern Poverty Law Center, which started this whole thing) says at least five of the organizations on CVN's list are “anti-gay, anti-women” groups. So he put a petition on Change.org asking Apple to drop CVN unless and until CVN drops those groups.
“From the beginning, I knew that once this issue was brought to Apple's attention, they would not want to be a part of CVN because it funds anti-gay hate groups,” said Crowther in a statement. “Apple is a fair-minded business. I'm glad this petition helped make Apple aware of this issue, and I am thrilled that they removed iTunes from CVN.”
Apple has joined an increasingly long list of companies, including Microsoft, REI, Macy's, Delta Airlines, BBC America and Wells Fargo, that have withdrawn support from CVN since the SPLC labeled many of the organizations that CVN supports as “hate groups.”
