Now that their contest for “booty-ful” models (Wait, what?) has come to a close, American Apparel is taking fire for refusing to give the prize to the rightful winner. Instead they decided to “award the prizes to other contestants that we feel truly exemplify the idea of beauty inside and out,” women they “will be proud to have representing our company.” And the winner just doesn't fit that bill.
Why? Well because she made a mockery of their contest, that's why. The nerve of her!
Her name's Nancy Upton, and she's a beautiful size 12 model. And when she read AA's call for plus-sized models, she decided to respond in kind.
The header on her Tumblr reads: “My name is Nancy Upton. I'm a size 12 and wanted to show American Apparel my fresh face (and full figure). My good friend Shannon Skloss came over to take some “booty-ful” photos of me … but I just couldn't stop eating.”
The images she sent AA, as you can imagine, follow that vein. Pictures of her eating chicken, bathing in ranch dressing and scarfing chocolate syrup expressed her displeasure with not only the tone of AA's model call, but also the name they gave the line.
They're calling it “the next BIG thing.” (emphasis belongs to AA) And as one of our favorite full-figured porn stars said on her blog, “I think it is actually funny and very telling that Nancy won the contest.”
April Flores has had her own issues with American Apparel. A year ago, while working on her own plus-sized clothing line, Flores met with one Maggie P. at their Downtown L.A. headquarters to look at AA's plus-size line and was met with disinterest and not a sexy thing for a woman over a size 8/10 to wear. That's when Ms. Maggie told Flores, “That's not our demographic.”
Never fear! AA's snarky creative director, Iris Alonzo, is here (a year late and a dollar short) to set the record straight! Ms. Maggie was “confused.”
Nobody's buying it, American Apparel.

This is ridiculous I am a size 12 and I am very sexy. I am not BIG, I am curvy in all the right places
Last time I checked, sizes 10 - 12 were considered a Medium... Since when is that a "plus" size?!?
Alas, a size 12 is considered "plus" when a company is looking to hire models.
My understanding is that a traditional medium with AA is labeled an XL, so these folks are really out of touch with reality.
