If there’s one thing my girlfriend and I have in common, it is our mutual love of television shows. Some of our favorites include “Sherlock," the BBC’s modern adaptation of the classic detective stories, and “Supernatural," the CW’s story of two brothers hunting demons and various other monsters that go bump in the night. We tend to get a little obsessive over them, but I’m sure a lot of you are wondering, what does that have to do with role-playing?
Perhaps some of you are familiar with role-playing on the internet. Many fans will role-play with others via text, acting as their favorite characters and writing them into scenes they wish they could see on their shows. This is a common practice with my girlfriend and I. We’ll keep our various stories going back and forth through e-mail, and it can be a lot of fun! And one day, the idea came to us – why not try it in bed?
I bet a lot of you are asking yourself, “what the hell?” and I don’t blame you. The idea seemed strange even to us in the beginning. We weren’t even sure where to start. Sure, it seemed simple enough in theory – just act out what we write so often. But for a while, we had a lot of trouble taking ourselves seriously. We would go for a minute or two before breaking into giggles. It certainly took quite a few tries for us to actually get to the sex aspect.
Still, like most things, practice makes perfect. As we went on, our new bedroom game got a lot easier. The idea seemed less strange and turned out to be a lot of fun. I’m sure some of you are still on the fence, but the idea really can bring a lot of new things into the bedroom. One of our favorite parts about role-playing is coming up with different scenarios. What are our characters doing? With both of us being writers, we enjoy coming up with many different stories and situations to put ourselves in. This brings something to our sex life that we would not be able to accomplish on our own.
Role-playing as a certain character gives us a different sort of satisfaction than the typical nurse or police officer scenario would. We love coming up with new situations to put the characters we love in, and it can be fun to let out our creative side in the bedroom. While I’m sure this practice isn’t common, I’m equally sure that at least a handful of readers out there have experimented with this before. At the very least, I’m sure some of my perhaps nerdier (nothing wrong with that!) readers are familiar with role-playing via text, and maybe now you’re considering this. And if you’re in the group of people likely still shaking their heads, don’t be afraid to give it a chance! Like a lot of things, this may seem different at first, but who knows – maybe you’ll end up enjoying it just as much as we do!
