In this article, I want to talk about the chastity play. We are going to define what it is, we are going to look at the most commonly utilized devices, and then I want to talk about why someone would be interested in this type of play.
Today, we will be discussing chastity play. I am sure most of you are familiar with the word chastity from your high school education, but in case you are unaware, chastity is sexual abstinence. In our society, it oftentimes refers to sexual abstinence before marriage. Within the BDSM world, chastity tends to just mean abstinence at any time.
Chastity belts are typically utilized as a part of power play, or in a power dynamic. This means a chastity belt is used to reinforce the submissive and dominant roles. The submissive wears the chastity device and the dominant (called a keyholder in chastity play, because they hold the key to the chastity belt) determines the rules of wearing the chastity device. Oftentimes, both the submissive and dominant find an erotic pleasure in this. The dominant is able to fully control the submissive’s sex life, because they can control when they can and cannot have sex. It can also be used as a form of punishment, because the submissive can often become sexually frustrated. They are constantly reminded of their sexual organs because they are covered in some sort of device, but they are unable to access and use them. The dominant gets a thrill from being in control; they get to revel in their power. They can barter with their submissive, for example oral sex for 30 minutes might be demanded before the submissive is released. Or, the dominant might enjoy teasing and denying their submissive. They might also enjoy the appearance of the chastity device. There is some variance in why people enjoy chastity play, but most people consider it a power play. It is about gaining and giving up control, and reinforcing dominant and submissive roles.
There are devices for both men and women, but they are obviously quite different. Sometimes the purpose of a chastity device is to only deny the ability to have sexual intercourse, but sometimes it is also to deny masturbation, as well. This all depends on the style and the ability of restriction the toy creates.
There are two main types of chastity devices:
1. Belt type
2. Cage type
The belt type can be used for both males and females.
For males, the belt type typically consists of a belt running above the hips of the submissive and then a metal part that runs between their legs. There is normally a tube or a sleeve that the penis is inserted into. This forces the penis to stay in a downwards position, and prevents the male from being able to access his genitals. Belts are typically made out of leather or metal. Leather tends to be for shorter term play, while metal is for longer term play. Often times, these devices have holes where the urinary tract is. This lets the user urinate while using the device. Leather is more porous and would not deal well with urine, so typically the longer term belts are comprised of metal.
Belts sometimes have an additional place to hold a butt plug in place. Not only is the wearer forced into chastity, but they are also forced into anal stimulation. Typically there is a small rectangular piece near the anus that holds a butt plug. The plug is inserted before the belt is locked, and there is not enough room for the plug to be removed without the belt being unlocked.
On some female belts, there is also a place to hold a dildo for the vagina. Again, there is a small spot where a dildo can sit against. The dildo is then inserted into the vagina and held in place by the belt. There is not enough room between the body and the belt for the dildo to be removed without removing the belt. Both the dildo and butt plug option can add to the sexual frustration of the wearer, as they are receiving stimulation but are unable to get full sexual release.
Some belts are meant for those with genital piercings. The piercings are incorporated into the device, which makes it more secure. For example, if a male has the head of his penis pierced, he could insert his penis into the sleeve. There would be a hole in the sleeve where a rod could be inserted through the sleeve into the penis head, and out of the penis head. Then, the rod could be locked, and the penis would be held by the sleeve and by the rod, making the chastity more secure.

The cage style is only for males. Basically, this consists of a piece that goes behind the testicles (much like a cock ring) that is attached to a sleeve, which holds the penis and prevents it from getting erect. The tube should fit the penis securely so it cannot get erect, but it should not be so tight that is causes a decreased blood flow to the penis. These are commonly made from leather, silicone, or from metal. Again, metal and silicone are better from long-term wear because urinating will not damage them. Typically, there is a hole at the end of the shaft or sleeve, so that the male can urinate while wearing the device. These can utilize genital piercings to make them more secure, too.

With chastity belts, security is always something you want, but this has to be balanced with safety. The tighter and more restrictive they are, the more you need to watch out for. You always want to make sure that adequate blood flow to the area is retained, adequate hygiene is achieved, and that the belt can be removed in case of emergency. Blood flow does still need to be maintained when wearing a chastity device at all times, so the wearer should watch for drastic color changes (some change to a purplish color is okay), and any severe pain, or pain that continues to get worse.
It can also be detrimental to a male's health if he does not ejaculate for a long period of time. Frequent ejaculation actually decreases your risk of prostate cancer. If you are looking at long-term chastity, you should read up on the risks of it and potentially even talk to your doctor.
