An erotic DVD in South Africa is causing a stir, not only because it’s one of the few adult movies produced by blacks and for blacks since apartheid outlawed the open public sale of porn, but it also has a powerful message about condom use and safe sex.
The movie is Mapona Volume 1, and it differs from the majority of locally-produced under-the-counter porn available in South Africa—every performer in the film underwent mandatory tests for sexually transmitted diseases before shooting began. Also, along with racy sex scenes, the male performers are displayed in the act of putting on a condom.
The producer, Tau Morena, says that the film was designed to be a “voyeuristic experience” where viewers get to enjoy “the average guy and girl next door, having great sex.”
“We want to show using condoms can be fun and practical,” he said.
But apart from encouraging responsible sexual practices, the film was also created because users of a South African explicit adult site, Sondeza.com, (which means “closer” in Zulu) complained that there wasn’t enough non-imported porn available. But things are looking up—along with Mapona Volume 1, ten adult movies were produced in the country this year, compared to last year’s four.
