Today, I want to discuss how you can make your very own wooden paddle in a relatively cheap manner.
Before we start, I want to talk about the practice of paddling. Paddling has long been a method of punishment used in schools, homes, and other locations. It was a form of punishment to reinforce certain behaviors. This practice is largely regarding as being unacceptable in developed nations, but does exist elsewhere in the world.
However spanking has been picked up as an erotic activity by the BDSM community and it is common to see it. The act of spanking can be a highly erotic and sensually gratifying for both the receiver and the giver of the spanking. Spanking can be done during some role playing. For example a school girl who is required to be punished by the head master would be a common role playing fantasy. It can be used as an act of foreplay where both parties get aroused. It can used during sex if the position exists. Or it can be used for “punishment” and be administered when the sub, or bottom, does not follow a rule and the top, or dominant, wants to punish them.
Spankings can be done over clothing, or with their receiver’s pants pulled down, or with the receiver being completely nude. All are possibilities. Spankings can also be done using a variety of instruments. They can be done with a bare hand, a cane, a flogger, or as we are making today- with a paddle. Paddles can be comprised of various materials such as plastic, leather, and wood. Today we will be making wooden paddles.
People enjoy spankings for a variety of reasons. Some people find them to be humiliating and enjoy that aspect. Some people enjoy the pain associated with them, while others enjoy the role playing (which might include age regression or a simple fantasy).
So now that you have an appreciation of why someone might enjoy spanking let's actually talk about creating our own wooden paddles.
To create your wooden paddle you are going to need:
1. A skill saw
2. 60, 150, and 220 grit sandpaper (preferable with an electric sander)
3. A piece of wood (1/2 inch thick works best)
4. A drill
5. A 2 inch drill bit.
So before we create our paddle we are going to need to design our paddle. You are going to need to make some decisions. As you change the dimensions of the paddle you are going to change the sensations the paddle provides.
1. Do you want a one handed or a two handed paddle?
2. How long do you want the paddle to be?
3. What wide do you want your paddle to be?
4. What style of paddle do you want?
So the first thing you need to decide is if you want a one handed or two handed paddle. Most people only ever use a one handed paddle because it is far easier to use. But occasionally if someone wants something that is very intimidating and has a strong psychological effect then a two handed paddle may be desired.
As you increase the length of the paddle, you make it easier to swing and easier to apply more force. If you have a 12 inch paddle it will be easier to swing and you can swing harder than if you have a 6 inch paddle. As you increase the length it becomes harder to swing a paddle in tight spaces. For example a 12 inch paddle is better if you are standing up, and are paddling someone over a bench or some piece of furniture. If you are wanting to paddle someone over your knee then a shorter paddle will be easier to swing and work better.

... (It is) best for foreplay-type situations. Consider commanding your partner to clean the dishes - with a playful swat on the butt if you find that he/she misses a spot. – Peg | https://www.edenfantasys.com/bdsm-toys/bdsm-spanking/eden-furry-heart-crop| Eden furry heart crop]
As you increase the width of you paddle you will get a more thuddy feeling. The impact will be more spread out over a large area of skin. It will feel less painful and warmer and gentler than a narrower paddle. A narrow paddle will feel stingier, sharper and more painful. Think of being hit with a ruler and think of being hit with a book. The ruler is a lot more sharp and intense while the book is less intense and feels a bit deeper.
Then finally, you need to decide on the style of paddle you want. Do you want it to be rectangular? Round like a ping pong paddle? You can add holes to make it aerodynamic and easier to swing. Changing the style of a paddle is mostly aesthetic. You can shape it like a heart. You can shape it like a boot. You can shape it however you desire.
If you do not know what you want look around at some sites until your find something you think you might like. Eden Fantasys has some paddles in their BDSM section. You will also be able to find lots of other sites that sell paddles as well.
So now that you have a design you can go out and buy a piece of wood to make your paddle with. I would personally recommend a piece that is 1/2 inch thick. This provides a good balance between strength without being too heavy.
Now that you have your piece of wood you are going to trace your design onto the paddle. To make it fine, I used Microsoft Word and went to the insert tab and clocked on shapes. Then I made geometric shapes to make my paddle. For the handles I used an oval shape and just guessed and checked until I found something that seemed like it would fit in my hand. I would recommend printing out some of them and gently wrapping your hand around the paper. This should give you a pretty good idea of what you want.
I made 4 paddles when I made mine. One I made like a ping pong paddle. So it had a circular blade. To do this I just made a circle on Microsoft Word. I then traced the circle onto my wood. Below is slightly I traced the oval for my handle, and then I just connected the two together using my hand and eyeballing it.
For my two rectangular paddles I just traced out a handle and then used a ruler to draw straight lines. Again I connected the handle to the blade using my eye. And finally a made a paddle that starts narrow at the top and gets wider closer to the handle. Here I did the same thing; I traced out lines using a ruler, traced the handle, and connected the two of them together.
Now you need to take your skill saw and cut out the shape. It is important to keep the saw straight up and down, or else you can get a bit of a curve on the side of your paddle. This is not a huge deal, but does take away from the aesthetic appeal slightly. Go slow when cutting out your paddle. And you can also do it in multiple cuts. If you want to stop your cut turn the blade gently away from the paddle and cut to the end of the piece of wood. Then let the piece of wood fall down and start cutting out your paddle again. Mine did not come out perfectly, and it is not completely symmetrical, but you can barely tell.
Now you can decide if you want a hole in the handle. If you make a hole in the handle you can attach a piece of string so you can hang your paddle up or wrap the rope around your hand when you are using the paddle. I used a 2 inch drill bit, but anything large enough so that a piece of rope or leather can fit through it is fine.
Now that you have your paddle all cut out it is time to sand it. So take your 60 grit sandpaper and fix any major flaws in the wood. It is a lot easier to use an electric sander, but you can do this by hand. It just takes longer. Then move up to 150 grit sandpaper and really sand the paddle a lot. Make sure it is nice and smooth, has no sharp edges, and is comfortable to use in your hand. I rounded the edges on my paddle slightly, using a sander to make it more comfortable.
Now is time to paint or stain your paddle. If you want your paddle to be a certain color then paint it. If you want the natural wood to come through then use a stain. I used polyurethane on my paddle. Apply a nice and even but thin layer, and then let it dry according to the package details. One it is dry take 220 grit sandpaper and sand it slightly. Repeat until you have your desired layers. I used three on my paddles. Sand with 220 grit sandpaper after every layer you apply.
And now you should have a fully functioning wooden paddle. You can now run a piece of leather or rope through the hole you made in the handle (if you made one) and just tie a knot to keep it in place.
The cost of your paddle is going to depend on how much the wood you bought costs. I honestly do not know the big differences between wood. Some are harder than others, some are easier to work with, but I am honestly not an expert. You would need to search for additional information for that. In my opinion most wood should work well. More beautiful woods and exotic woods will increase the cost, but something cheaper like pine will work just as well. It just might not have the deep red color of maple. I made my paddles out of oak and they turned out quite well. I made all 4 of my paddles for under 20 dollars. Quite cheap in my opinion and they all vary in their design. The narrow one is quite stingy, while the larger paddles are a lot more thuddy.
Here you can see the four paddles I made:
