Say you just got fired from your job. A job you happened to like. A nice job with Baltimore Substance Abuse Systems Inc. What do you do?
If you're one 51-year-old (at the time) Walter Powell, a disgruntled IT administrator, the obvious choice is to hack their system, right? Generally speaking, though, you don't want to get caught.
But the hacking's not the sexy part of this story. Not that hacking's not sexy. It's just the story gets sexier.
Powell installed keylogger programs on his coworkers' computers, and then sat back for a little while, waiting and watching, like any good hacker does. And once he'd gathered the information he needed, and the perfect opportunity came along, his cat-like hacker reflexes kicked in.
Gregory Warren, the CEO of BSAS, was giving a PowerPoint presentation to the board of directors when Powell remotely rebooted the computer Warren was using and projected a naked lady on the 64" screen.
Powell was recently sentenced to time served, three years probation, 100 hours of community service and is not allowed to own or access any remote desktop software of any kind for the duration of his probation.
