Wonder Wand
If you are looking for an alternative to the Hitachi, then the Vibratex Mystic Wand is something you should consider. You are not inhibited by a cord which offers more versatility and the ability to be portable without sacrificing the performance of the wand.

Pros
No cords to worry about
Cons
not waterproof
Use: The Vibratex Mystic Wand is a wand massager intended for external stimulation for all erogenous zones. My husband and I have used it for clitoral stimulation and to stimulate his balls and shaft. We use it during sex when in missionary position holding it on my clit while he is on top of me. The thrust of him moving it back and forth is amazing. He tells me the vibrations can be felt when he is inside me and he loves the feeling the vibrations send. The wand can also be used as a back and body massager, but we haven't used it for that purpose. I feel it is suitable for beginners and advanced toy lovers alike because it has a variety of settings.
Material/Texture: The plastic handle is soft and easy to grip. The large bulbous head is smooth and perfect for receiving stimulation and is made out of a soft silicone which is an eight on the safety scale. It is soft to the touch, hypoallergenic, latex free, non-porous, and phthalates free. It also has no odor which is fantastic.
Design: It is a wand massager without the hassle of cords. The large bulbous head has six grooves in it and there are four more groves at the base of the head to allow for flexibility. The ridges do not add any extra satisfaction for me, but it doesn't take away anything either.
Color: I find the wand to be very attractive and classy. It is mostly black with a white head and white center where the controls are located.
Size: The Mystic Wand is discrete enough for travel and easily portable without the hassle of cords. I have slipped mine in my small purse and found it to be perfect. It is approximately 8 ¼” long by 5 ¾ circumference by 1 ¾” diameter. It is relatively light with an approximate weight of half a pound or so. As you can see in the picture below, it is relatively the same size as a remote control.
Noise: It has a low hum on the highest setting, but I do not find it distracting.
Performance: The Mystic Wand requires four AA batteries that are not included. However, my husband and I used this at least ten times before having to change the batteries. I know it depends on the type of batteries one uses and the duration of each play, but I can confidently say it uses batteries wisely. The batteries are located at the bottom of the wand underneath a screw off cap. The compartment has an o-ring to keep water out when lightly cleaning.
Controls: It has two easy to use push button controls that light up when turned on that are located on the base of the wand. The on/off button is located on the bottom. Press it one time and the wand immediately goes to the lowest setting. By pressing the top function button, you are able to cycle through the various functions.
Functions: The really nice concept with their functions is it has a corresponding color scheme.
Function 1: Slow steady vibration with a green light
Function 2: Medium steady vibration with an orange light
Function 3: High steady vibration with a red light
Function 4: pulse-pulse-pulse-pulse going between orange and red lights
Function 5: pulse-pulse-steady going with two oranges and then a red
Function 6: slow gradual build up pulse to medium pulse going from green to orange
The vibrations are felt in the head and it stimulates a wide area. It does not leave your hand numb when holding it and does not cause the itchy feeling you get sometimes with other vibrators.
Care/Maintenance: Vibratex recommends the use of a warm wet cloth with mild soap and water or your favorite toy cleaner. It is not a waterproof toy so keep in mind that this is not submersible and cannot be cleaned as such. It is a little more difficult to clean in the ridges.
Lubricant compatibility: The Mystic wand is compatible with water-based lubricants only. Do not use silicone-based lubricants with this massager because silicone on silicone breaks down the silicone on the toy and we do not want that.
Packaging: The Mystic wand came in clear, simple, plastic package that you can see through so it is most definitely not discrete. However, because it is a wand and doesn't look like a conventional sex toy people that are not familiar with sex toys would be none the wiser.
Storage: The wand came with a black velvet-like draw-string pouch to store it in which I really like. It picks up a little bit of lint when stored in the pouch, but nothing drastic that a swipe of a warm wash cloth can't fix.

Experience
This is one of the first toys I bought and I absolutely love it, and it is by far my favorite toy in my toy box right now. It is the closest toy I've found that's almost brought me to orgasm. I know if you're not familiar with my situation and see almost bringing someone to orgasm you do not consider it a good toy to purchase, but I've never had an orgasm so if a toy almost brings me there then it's a good toy in my opinion. It is not going to have the power of the Hitachi because it runs off 4AA batteries and the Hitachi is a plug in 120V, but it has the perfect level of vibrations for me because I do not like super powerful vibrations. As I mentioned earlier, my husband and I use the wand initially as a warm up clitoral stimulator for me. When we are ready to proceed, I will hold the massager on my clit while he makes love to me. Sometimes the wand does get moved during the act, but we use the glow of the light to reposition it and start up again. I have found it easier to hold onto in the doggy style position, but I prefer the movement in missionary position. I think my body responds to the movement of the wand while he's thrusting back and forth than me just holding it in position for doggy or in warm up. Overall, the Mystic Wand has met and exceeded my expectations by far.
Follow-up commentary
2 months after original review
I've owned the Vibratex Mystic Wand for four months now, and it still is my husband's favorite toy to use during couples play. After many uses and several close encounters, last night was the first time I was able to reach climax with this product. I do not know if my body is responding more easily to toys now that I have finally been able to achieve orgasm or not, but you won't hear me complaining one bit. Any toy that allows me to achieve orgasm is a winner in my book. If you like wand massagers, I'd recommend giving the Mystic Wand a try.
