This Key May Need a MasterLock

Jopen's Vela surely sails as a strong, filling vibe. It also has an easy to remove battery cage, which leads to peaceful battery installation. This toy is the largest of the line and is geared more for intermediate users who like strong vibrations. If you are more sensitive in nature or prefer more petite toys, Vela may be too much.

Use

Finally, the moment has arrived! Key is here, ladies and gentlemen. Jopen has come out with a new line, and in many ways has heard the comments users have made about their products such as those from their famous Vanity line. For starters, all the toys in the Key line come in three colors. Also, the variety of toy styles Key has allows something for everyone.

One of these toys is Vela, named after a constellation that looks like (and is translates to) sails. Vela is a textured vibrator designed for those who like filling toys. Because of its size, it might not be a good first choice for beginners. Vela is more suited to more advanced users and those who like larger toys. Vela can be used vaginally as well as externally. It can provide strong vibrations to the clitoris, nipples, and a variety of erogenous zones. While Vela could technically be inserted anally, it is not recommended. Vela does not have a flared base, is large, and has textures where debris can easily collect. If desired, you can stimulate the P-spot externally or tease around the anal opening.

Vela is waterproof and discreet in sound, so it is an option for those who live with others or are in a dorm situation. It can be used in the shower as well.

Material / Texture

Vela's silicone is luscious. It is silky smooth and lovely to touch. It is high end and a similar caliber to LELO silicones. It also is more lint resistant than some Jopen Vanity toys. Silicone is one of the safest materials to use for toys. It is non porous, so the toy has a longer shelf life and will not harbor bacteria. It is also hypoallergenic and very body safe. There is a seam that runs around the perimeter of the toy, but it is smoothed out and of no concern. The handle of Vela is plastic, which is very vibrant in color and also a safe material. The button at the base is made of stainless alloy.

The silicone has little drag. If needed, water based silicone can be added for a smoother glide. There are textures on Vela. Vela has five lines that run around the shaft. Where the lines are the toy is thinner, and between the lines the toy is more plush. It gives a cushion-like effect. The texture is not extreme but can be felt. If a user is comfortable with the girth, a beginner to textures could try this out slowly. It might be too much for thrusting for more sensitive users, though.

Vela is solid. It will not bend in any way. The silicone itself has a plushness to it if you squeeze it. There is no overt odor or taste to Vela.

Design / Shape / Size

Vela is a traditional vibrator but is designed thoughtfully. Perhaps, because of its ode to sails, the texture is reminiscent of sea shells and things of a nautical nature. Regardless, Vela has a notable size which could intimidate some. Her width is above the average toy (which seems to be around 4.5 inches) by around half an inch or so. This could be a bit much for those who are starting out or prefer more petite toys in general. Those who like a more filling sensation will appreciate Vela. Her length is about average at almost 5 inches. Her total length is still smaller than your standard rabbit or larger styled toys.

Compared to Ceres Original

In terms of discretion, Vela is not very loud and clocks in at 2 Bees. You will not be heard beyond a blanket and closed door. For travel, you can place Vela in the pouch it comes with. Vela can fit in a medium sized bag or larger. During travel, remove the batteries to prevent the toy from turning on by accident. In general, always remove the batteries when the toy is not going to be used. It's best not to leave this toy out in the open; it's obvious it is a sex toy, albeit a tasteful one.

Functions / Performance / Controls

Vela has seven functions. The controls are straightforward; there is one silver button on the base of the toy. press this button to access the first setting of the toy. Press the button again to cycle through the patterns. They are:

1. Standard Vibration
2. Rumbles
3. Wave: continuous pulses that rev up and down
4. Pulses
5. Throb: 2 big pulses and then 3 smaller ones, repeat
6. Flutter: Pulses, but every pulse, well, flutters
7. Tease: one long pulses, pause, followed by a short one, repeat

There is one aspect of Vela's controls that may vex some. It only has one set intensity. The intensity is at 4 Vrooms. The amount of Vrooms ranges depending on the setting, but at its strongest, Vela is at 4 Vrooms. While this is great for those who like power, this may be too intense for more sensitive users. There is no way to change the intensity. However, using some of the pulses might make your experience with Vela less intense.

To turn Vela of, simply hold the button for a couple of seconds. Vela does not have a memory, so it will always turn on to the first vibration setting. Vela is waterproof and has an O-ring to keep water out. Make sure the cap is secured tightly when using near water.

Installation
Vela takes 4 AAA batteries. The battery lasts from 1.5 to about 2 hours (as stated in the instructions). To install the batteries, twist the cap off the base of the toy. From the base of the open toy you'll see a plastic battery cage in the same color as your toy.

You can pull out the battery cage to place the batteries.

Installation is straightforward and not frustrating.

Care and Maintenance

Care for Vela is simple. Because it is waterproof, you can use soap and water as long as the cap is screwed on correctly. Make sure to clean around the rippled lines; debris will easily collect there. Either use a lint free cloth or wet wipe to clean the ridges on the toy. Overall, it is not a lint collector compared to other silicone toys, but it'll still pick up a stray hair or two. Once clean and dry, you can store Vela in the pouch she comes with. You can use the box it comes in, but it is bulky if you are low on space.

Because Vela is silicone, only used water based lubricant to protect the lush silicone coating.

Packaging

The packaging for Vela is pleasing to the eye. Vela has a sleeve over the box. The card stock sleeve is in the color of the toy your purchased and advertises the toy. In this way, it is not discreet. Lift the sleeve off the box and you'll see a door you can open to reveal the toy. Interestingly, the toy has no further barriers like shrink-wrap or other forms of packaging. Because of this, be careful when opening the door to the toy; your toy could tumble out onto the floor. While the Styrofoam is somewhat snug, the toy can come right out.

When you open the door, you'll also see a small plastic bag that contains the storage pouch for Vela as well as two inserts with information. One regards basic use and the patterns of Vela. The other reiterates the details on the box regarding the design of the Key line. The pouch is a material that does not collect lint and lets silicone toys slide easily in. Vela can make a lovely gift for someone who appreciates a toy with girth.

Experience

Having reviewed both Vela and Ceres, I'm torn. I'd like to somehow combine the great aspects of both toys to make one nearly perfect toy. Ceres is more to my size preferences, but the frustration of her battery cage, installing batteries, and fluctuations in noise make her unreliable in some situations. This could have been remedied by making the battery cage sightly larger or having a dedicated one like Vela.

Vela is more user friendly in terms of design (not size). It also has manageable yet lovely textures. It's just too big for me.

NOTE: There is a chance that the toy may be jostled on without input on the battery. This could simply be one toy being troublesome or just an issue from the first few released. Either way, it does not affect use of the product. If anything, remove the batteries from Vela after use to prevent it from possibly being turned on.

I am delighted that you compared the two models for me! I think I will go with the Vela & see how I do. Thanks for the terrific review & the helpful pictures! I find comparisons one of the most helpful features in a review, as I am usually trying to decide between some items, or need to relate to something I already own!
