The Impulse micro butterfly by Cal Exotics is great for someone that needs very powerful clitoral stimulation and enjoys having a good range of patterns. It can be used with a person of any toy skill since it has both light and powerful levels. Personally I didn't find this to be a very functional partner's toy due to the fact that the straps are hard to work with and the toy has a tendency to want to weigh itself down, good for missionary, not good for doggy. This is also NOT to be shared between partners because there is no way to put a condom on it and it is made out of jelly so it can not be sterilized. For most people I wouldn't say this is the whole "hands free" product it was made out to be.
The material the butterfly is made of is jelly, not a very good thing but it's not that bothersome due to the fact that it's so small. It still picks up everything and can't stay clean that easily but it's not as big of a deal as a full sized toy. Jelly only rates as a 2 on the safety scale (for good reason) and if you're not sure how you will react to jelly I would suggest you use this product before you try other insertables made out of the material. Another downfall of jelly is that it's really picky in that it will only accept water based or silicone lube(without melting the toy).
The jelly has a smooth feeling to it and the toy is not as squishy as most jelly products are. The wings and ears are very flexible and can be stretched but the rest of the body is pretty firm and hard to move. When it's away from me I don't notice any kind of smell but when I put it close to my nose I get a faint rubbery like smell. The toy is also tasteless but I don't see much need to put it in your mouth. It might look cute enough to eat, but trust me it's not. I'm not sure what material the straps are made of but they are stretchable (also with adjusters) and the only way you won't be able to wear them is if it's too big for you to begin with.
The design is of a clear jelly "butterfly", which has ears that look more like curved bunny ears than insect antennae and a face that sticks out farther than it should. Going beyond the butterfly bunny hybrid features you also have the bottom that instead of going straight down or slightly back like a normal butterfly, it curves forward more like a bee. Moving away from the questionable inter-species breeding thought process that occurred, the toy also has little bumps under the head and above the stinger tail. In between those bumps and also along tail are ridges along the body to give it even more texture throughout. The wings of the toy actually look like the generic butterfly wings people draw and they have 4 holes in them, one on each corner. These holes are used to keep the straps attached to the toy and all the pieces come pre-assembled when it arrives.
Inside the jelly butterfly is a gold colored bullet, which I believe to be plastic, in the middle of the body. This egg shaped bullet is connected to the control box by a black wire that comes out of the bottom of the jelly toy. The base of the control box is also clear but the top front is colored gold with black buttons and writing. After storing the toy for a while (not even using it) I noticed that the part where the two pieces of jelly come together to hold the bullet had started to separate and could easily be pulled apart one day. Overall the toy looks pretty cheaply made and doesn't look like it would be the price that it is.
Toy stats-
Length: 2"
Width: 1 3/4"
Size: One size fits most
Weight: 0.3 lb
The toy is controlled by a bullet that runs along the butterfly's body. The bullet is connected to the control box which has 3 buttons, two to go up or down on the power and the pattern button to transition to the next pattern (why the button to change the pattern has an "F" on it, I'll never know).
The control box is also really cheap looking, it's see through plastic, like they thought batteries would be exciting to look at. This toy takes three AAA batteries, not the usual AA batteries you see with toys. I really wish they would have made a separate button on the side to turn it on and off because if you're in one of the patterns where you can't change the power you have to cycle to one you can and then hit the down power button to turn it off.
The toy has 5 different patterns and power levels; each power level feels different and will accommodate whatever strength you need. If you have only a slight vibration this works well or if you need more powerful stimulation you can still get pleasure from the higher levels.
X.I- Straight vibration. On the lower levels it has a thumping sound and as you go up it sounds more buzzy. When you first turn it on it's very loud but then goes back to the level it should be on.
X.II- This level sounds and feels like a race car revving up and going back down, it goes through all the power levels. This level and the next level get VERY loud so I wouldn't suggest playing with these with anyone in the house (or in a apartment/hotel room with thin walls).
X.III- This also sounds and feels like a race car but it only goes to the top and then starts back at the bottom again instead of lowering back down gradually.
X.IV- If you like thumping with a little rhythm this is the setting for you. It thuds for 2 times and then goes into vibrations for a few seconds before starting the cycle over again. In this pattern you can choose whatever power level you want.
X.V- The last level is a straight pulsing vibration. On the first couple levels is it pretty quiet but from there on out it gets kinda loud. This is also a level were you can have control over the power.
Jelly toys are hard to keep clean and it's recommended that you keep all jelly products away from other toys because it can spread bacteria to other things and melt onto other toys. To clean the toy you can wash the butterfly with warm water and very mild soap but try to make sure you don't get the cord or control box wet. You can also use toy wipes on the toy. Again jelly can not be sterilized so you can not boil it.
This is not a waterproof product so it's not something you can enjoy in the shower or tub. The toy comes in a paper box which you can use as storage but I just placed mine in a plastic sandwich bag so it wouldn't take up as much room.
The packaging is pretty non-discreet and I wouldn't say it would make a good gift for someone. It's not showing any kind of major nudity but you can definitely see how the product is used by the picture. The lady on the box has her legs spread and the toy on top of her teddy (lingerie). In the picture the teddy she is wearing is black but also fairly see through so you can see her breasts at the top of the box. The box also has a picture of the product and a few details about what the toy can do. The packaging also doesn't come with any kind of instructions in it so good luck figuring out how to put on those straps by yourself!
My first time experience with the toy was not a great one. I first didn't want to use it because I was put off by the look of it. When I actually did get down using the toy I struggled with the straps and eventually just took them off of because they were that useless to me. While testing the power levels I hadn't even used it for half an hour and both my genitals and hand were numb. I could still feel the vibrations with the toy on me but when I took it off and touched my clit I literally couldn't feel anything, it was pretty scary actually. When I went to wash up I wasn't able to feel water running on my fingers either from holding the toy, it's no wonder this thing comes with straps!
I did later give it another try but the toy just couldn't redeem itself. The sensation is good for a while on the lower settings and trying out the different patterns to change it up was fun but it's not something I'd regularly use. Right now the batteries are put back into the junk drawer and this toy is staying in the back of my collection.
Follow-up commentaryI still don't like it1 month after original review
I still really hate this toy. I've tried my very best to at least tolerate it but it fails me every time. That said I don't really want to throw it away because I feel like it's a waste but at the same time it's just jelly and is probably wreaking havoc in the bacteria department as we speak. Sigh, I'm just glad I got this in a grab bag and did not buy it separately at its $40 price tag. At least now I know strap on vibrators aren't my thing and if you don't want numb lady parts, I advise you to stay away as well.
