Pros
Adds different kinds of stimulation, transfers vibrations well, easy to clean
If you haven't heard of the Hitachi Magic Wand, you've been living under a rock for the past 30 years. It's considered one of the best sex toys on the market even though it's original intention was to be a back massager. Because it wasn't really designed for genital use, it doesn't have the most ideal shape for stimulation. That's where these attachments come in. They take your Hitachi from "back massager" to "glorious masturbation wand" with a few simple steps.
This cap features two sided with different ridges. One side has three horizontal ridges that are good for all-over massage and can stimulate genitals, as well. If the Hitachi wasn't so bulky, these would be great when placed vertically along the vagina. The side with the vertical ridge is better for vaginal stimulation. The ridge on this side features a tongue protrusion which is wonderful for stimulating the clitoral area. When held against the vagina, this edge does a good job of getting all up in your stuff and provides more direct and slightly dampened vibrations. It also adds a little tiny bit of a flicking sensation to the usually broad Hitachi. There is also a large amount of space in case you want the normal Hitachi experience.
Personally, I wanted this cap more for the easy cleaning and ability to sterilize my Hitachi head. I'm super anal about my toys being clean and the Hitachi is one of my most used toys. The older Hitachi was a bit of a pain to get totally clean to my liking. This one, on the other hand, is very simple and can be totally germ-free if you need it.
Silicone is a wonderful material and Vixen is known for their super high quality silicone products. Silicone generally has no smell, taste, and is non-porous. The only drawback to this and most silicone toys is that they have an affinity for lint, dust, and kitty hairs. However, this is only a small drawback when you consider how easy it is to give it a real good cleaning.
The overall texture of this is slightly tacky, which should be expected. It has a very nice grip and drag that someone like myself, who doesn't like any lube at all near my clitoris, can easily appreciate. With lube, it gets nice and slick. The material is firm, but still flexible and transmits the vibrations very well. The ridges are also very flexible with the tongue part being the most flexible area. It can be easily moved and manipulated against the clitoris with no issues. I'm pretty convinced that it's the perfect amount of flexibility for just about anyone.
The size of this is just a little bit larger than the original Hitachi head. The largest part of it is the tongue part which reaches out a little less than an inch. It doesn't make the Hitachi any bulkier even though it is about twice the weight of the original cap.
The horizontal ridges on the one side of the cap stick our about 1/4" of an inch from the base allowing them to get into any tight spots, but they feel very firm when applied to the skin. If they were any longer or shorter they may have lost the overall effect of the design. The side with the vertical ridge is tapered from the tongue part down to the top of the cap in a way that's very anatomy friendly. The further down you go on it, the more dampened the vibrations are (even though they're still super intense). It's a great way to customize your Hitachi experience.
Of course the overall design of it makes the innocent Hitachi look a little more suspicious. I'm not sure what part of your body you would need these kind or ridges for other than your naughty bits, so it'd be best to hide this one if you have this cap on it.
The only gripe I really have with the design is that it seems just a tiny bit big and there's a small amount of space left between the bare head of the Hitachi and the walls of the cap. Because of this, it seems to rattle around and make the Hitachi even louder than it already is.
To use this cap, you will have to remove the old cap that the Hitachi originally comes with. There's a little diagram included, but it's not the most useful one out there. To do this, you just lift around the bottom edge of the original cap and press it up until that side is freed. Keep pulling up and twisting after you have the bottom lip free and the head will pop right off. Slip this one right on and you're ready to go.
The vibrations of the Hitachi actually seem to change a bit with this cap on. I didn't find myself with that Hitachi itch (Hit-itchy?) that I got when I used the original cap for a while. For some reason, I really preferred the plain area of the cap without any of the ridges. The tongue protrusion just didn't live up to my love for the Hitachi. It is nice to be able to go from one ridge to another for a different experience. This cap really does extend the sensations that you're able to get from your normal High/Low settings. The vibrations are slightly muted which make this a good cap for those who find the vibrations of the Hitachi alone to be a little too intense for their tastes. I've been able to comfortably use the high speed which I wasn't able to before. If you still like your normal speeds, the plain areas of the cap pull these off really well without lessening them at all.
I really hate how this makes the Hitachi even louder, though. It's not incredibly louder than the original cap, but it does make a difference in the sound and makes it more of a slight rattle than a hum. I've thought about putting a hair band around the cap to keep it a bit quieter. For now, I'm limited to using this when the roommate isn't home, but I still feel like my neighbors might be able to hear it. Oh well, I'm "massaging my back".
Old Hitachi Cap: Made of mysterious material that seems kind of like it might be some sort of plastic cloth with foam inside. Has all of these tiny cracks in it that are hard to clean. Stains easily. Shows wear and tear easily. Can become discolored with use. Smells funky. Can't be sterilized. Porous.
This cap: Made of silicone. Smooth. Easy to rinse and clean. Doesn't have a smell. Doesn't stain. Doesn't show wear and tear. Can be sterilized. Non-porous.
It'e east to see why this cap is much better than the original when it comes to cleaning. With this one, you can easily pop it off, wash it with antibacterial soap and water, boil it, throw it in the dishwasher, or was it in a 10% bleach solution. This cap will also show less wear and tear than the original cap and doesn't have all of those little cracks in it that I couldn't stand cleaning. The only downside is that it likes to pick up fuzz from everywhere. I've remedied this by keeping it covered with a small sandwich back when it's not in use. You can store this however you store your Hitachi. Just be mindful of the dust and you should be good.
As with all silicone toys, only use a water-based lube if you need one.

Follow-up commentaryI still like it2 months after original review
I still like this cap because it's easy to clean, and great for a little extra texture and stimulation. However, I think the extra weight of it actually caused the two pieces of the outside of my Hitachi to have a little gap between them which makes it a little louder. When I take this cap off, it stops making such a loud noise. It's held up to use very well, and I see myself keeping it around for quite some time.
