Water-based lubricant

The Average Jane/Joe's Lubrication

Does KY Jelly deserve to be the exemplification of sex lube that it is? No. It's not the Hitachi Wand of personal lubricants. It's still pretty decent on the whole, especially for beginners or men that are looking to spice up their "me time."

Use

KY Jelly is something everyone is familiar with. You don't need experience with toys, kink, or butt-sexing to know what it's used for. When it comes to brand recognition, KY is king. It practically invented the euphemism "personal lubricant." It can be found on store shelves across the country.

It seems as though the product's quality has been positioned according to its reputation as well: it's pretty decent for most uses, but doesn't really excel at any. I can recommend KY Jelly to someone looking for a reliable product for beginner usage, but some day you'll have to graduate into being a "sex lubricant" connoisseur and pick something else. If you choose KY first, you'll be able to appreciate the better stuff when you get it and have something decent to use in the mean time.

It's also great for male masturbation.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

The substance found inside its simplistic white container is surprisingly easy to spread and pour. When KY Jelly first leaves its home, it's anything but sticky. Over time however, it dries out and becomes increasingly gunky. This can be remedied by introducing a tiny amount of water to prevent the dehydration (saliva, for instance) or simply adding more lube.

If you use it to masturbate, you'll find a fine layer of dried gel coating your hand when you're done. It's easy to wash off with soap and water, but it doesn't just wipe away. KY Jelly isn't very thick feeling until it starts to dry up. That's probably the biggest disappointment it brings to the table.

Taste / Aroma

KY Jelly is like most other lubes out there: it tastes terrible. After using it on my lady friend's hoo-haa, I typically don't want to bring my tongue anywhere near the region. It's not a "grin and bear it" kind of taste. It's like swallowing gasoline.

The lack of smell is a plus however.
    • Bad taste
    • No smell

Performance

KY Jelly must be washed off after use unless you like your hand and/or body coated in an invisible layer of dried, post-use, sexual lubricant.

As stated earlier, it doesn't last that long in an open environment without drying out (especially during male masturbation). This isn't that much of a problem for internal use (such as vaginal sex in particular), but can still be an issue.

Having said that, it makes male masturbation much more satisfying and anal sex considerable less painful. It does its job.
    • Dries up too fast
    • Gets sticky
    • Needs to be washed off with soap and water

Packaging

The non-descript packaging that holds KY Jelly looks like a lotion tube-bottle. There's nothing pornographic on it and they even use the discreet term "personal lubricant" over "anal lube" (unlike our wicked stuff).
    • Can be opened with one hand
    • Discreet looking packaging
    • Does not leak

Personal comments

This suffices just fine as a masturbation aid for men.

Experience

This was the first lube I ever masturbated with and the first lube I ever did anal play with. I would use it again for both purposes, but I'm more likely to try a new lube for anal in particular.
Follow-up commentary
After trying other lubes, I have to say, KY is still a pretty good, standard choice for most applications. I like that it's easy to pass-off as not-that-kinky, too.
