Fusion Original Bodyglide by B. Cumming Company (yes, that really is the name of the company!)is a personal lubricant. This can be used for intercourse, male or female masturbation and/or foreplay. Because it is a silicone lube, those with silicone allergies/sensitivities should avoid this product. You should not use this with any toys or condoms that contain silicone as it will cause a chemical reaction that will break down the molecules that bond to form the silicone ingredients.
A little about the main ingredients: cyclopentasilonxane and dimethicone. Having studied chemisty a billion light years ago, I did what any scholar would do--I looked these ingredients up on the internet!! Silica is a naturally occuring substance that forms the base for silicone. The silica is combined with organic ingredients (oxygen, hydrogen, carbon)to form silicone. When further combined, silicone based polymers, via a chemical reaction, are formed.
I have an explanation that I have been using since chem class to explain the difference between a simple mixture and a chemical reaction. Let's say I have a half cup of red sugar, a half cup of blue salt, a cup of coffee and a half cup of milk (the amounts are not important). If I mix the sugar and salt in a bowl, I still have sugar and salt. They did not bind to form a new substance and I can easily separate the blue crystals of salt from the red sugar. BUT, if I pour the milk into the cup of coffe, both ingredients are bound together and form a new substance. I can not easily separate the milk from the coffee because a new liquid has been created. That is how the silica combines with various ingredients to form a large variety of silicone items.
This is one of the best silicone lubes we have used. The dimethicone is used as a skin protectant (which when used as a skin lotion, or personal lubricant, acts as a sealant to prevent loss of the body's natural moisture). It is fairly safe to use and it is a major ingredient in hand lotion and baby moisturizers. Nothing is a 100% sure thing and side effects include itching and burning. Also, if you find that a product containing demethicone (or other silicone based products) drys rather than lubricates, this is a sign of an allergic reaction and not a failure of the item to moisturize. Hives, breathing problems and any swelling are signs of a serious allergic reaction and require immediate medical attention. Silicone based lubricants (and other silicone products such as skin moisturizers and some hair products) are NOT recommended for pregnant or nursing women. The cyclopentasiloxane is popular as a lubricant ingredient and waterproofing agent which also seals in your body's natural moisture (which, by the way, is how all skin conditioners work--they do not "add" to your skin, but "prevent" you from losing natural moisture). Petroleum jelly is one of the most effective methods of having baby soft hands and feet, but is not recommended as an intimate personal lubricant. The combination of the dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane prevents either or both of the ingredients from evaporating. You should take special care to check that the cap is screwed on tightly to help this along.
CAVEAT: My intention with all that techinical information is not to scare the heeby jeebies out of anyone, but to help you understand how these things function. They sound scarier than they are (unless you are the person who DOES have a serious reaction, then they don't sound scary enough). When a person is having surgery a consent form is signed. The procedure, along with potential benefits and possible problems, is carefully explained by the doctors and nurses involved. Hidden in the list of possible problems is always a reference to death. Does that mean we expect the patient to die? Probably not, or the patient would not be on the schedule. But the patient, like the consumer of personal lubricants, is entitled to know the ups and downs of the procedure. What I have written here applies to all silicone based products.
