I found this to be a step up from water-based lubricants, and I absolutely love how long it lasts. Since it doesn't get sticky or tacky, is ideal for use in water and doesn't irritate my sensitive skin, this is fast on its way to becoming my favorite. I don't find it a hassle to clean, and as long as I keep JO Premium away from my silicone toys, it's fantastic!

Incompatible with silicone toys Necessitates cleanup
JO Premium Lubricant is a silicone product, which means that it is generally not suited for use with silicone toys. Though it is suggested that silicone lubricants may be safe for use with toys that are 100% food-grade silicone, they can bond with anything less than that and degrade the material, creating small holes where bacteria can hide. This makes silicone impossible to sterilize and lowers the safety rating significantly. It is, however, compatible with all non-silicone toys.
System JO certifies that this lubricant is safe for use with latex. As it is made with pharmaceutical-grade silicone, it works well with latex condoms or to keep latex clothing nice and shiny. This lubricant can be used for vaginal or anal penetration and masturbation with or without toys. It is not ideally suited to oral sex, because it just plain doesn't taste good.
The ingredients list is quite short, but that doesn't mean that it's not a mouthful. This lubricant contains cyclopentasiloxane, cyclotetrasiloxane, dimethiconol, dimethicone. These are all silicon-based compounds commonly found in cosmetics and conditioners. Cyclopenta- and tetrasiloxane are considered safe for human use, however there are some concerns about their interaction with the environment.
Because this lubricant is silicone-based, it is much more suited to use in the shower, bath or pool than a water-based lubricant. Jo Premium is available in on Eden in three sizes - either 1, 2.5 or 8 fl oz. The bottle that I will be reviewing is 4.5 fl oz.
Having never used a silicone lubricant before, I was basing my expectations off of the advice of friends and reviewers. I found that the JO Premium Lubricant was not as thick as I believed that it would be, but it is indeed much more viscous than a water-based lubricant.
This lubricant is very easy to pour out of the bottle and stays in place quite well. The following photograph is ten seconds after I held my hand vertical with the above droplet on my skin:
This product is very slippery if spilled on smooth surfaces, so be especially cautious if using it in the shower or tub. I do not find it to be obviously oily or greasy, but it is quite slick in nature. It does not get sticky or tacky after prolonged use, which makes it fantastic for long, vigorous sessions.
JO Premium is largely unscented and unflavored, though it does smell slightly bitter to me. As far as the taste goes, it's very light, faint and reminiscent of vegetable oil. I think that they did a very good job of making this as odorless and flavorless as they could - things claiming to be unscented are generally one of my pet peeves, as I find that nothing is truly completely without odor. Though it's just semantics, it actually made me feel much better to read the words "Fragrance-Free" on the bottle than it would have to read "Unscented."
This lubricant provided a significant decrease in vaginal friction with the application of a very small amount - though you are paying a premium price, you really are getting a premium product. It is very long lasting, even when exposed to moving air and water, and has not yet required reapplication, even after a lengthy session. I did not find that it really absorbed into my skin - which made sense to me, because silicon-based polymers are quite large - however it did leave my skin feeling quite moisturized and smooth after use. This, too, makes sense when considering the ingredients, most of which are also used as conditioners. Silicone lubricants are generally less likely than water-based to affect your pH level, which is fantastic if you are trying to conceive and also reduces your risk of infection.
Removal necessitates the use of soap with your water, as simply flushing the lubricant does not do much good. I don't mind having a bit of residue left behind, so when I remove my JO Premium after use, I tend to just take an Eden Wipe and use it to do a bit of damage control. Because it is inert and contains no glycerin, parabens or other potentially concerning substances, I don't feel pressured to make sure that I get it all off.
I wouldn't say that the packaging is particularly discreet, but it is fairly futuristic and nice to look at. The label on the bottle could easily be peeled off if you intended to travel with it, and it could pass as a bottle of aloe vera or other clear substance.
The bottle contains a fair amount of information, as well as instructions in English, French, Spanish and German, but my favorite thing about it is the tag-line, "meet your new best friend." It brings to mind an image of going for ice cream and playing road hockey with an anthropomorphic bottle of lubricant. Most of what is written on the bottle is promotional information - like the claims about JO Premium being recommended by doctors worldwide - but one thing that I did appreciate was the fact that not only did it include instructions for both condoms and genital areas, it specifically directed the user to apply only a small amount. With new lubricants, it is often difficult to know how much is necessary, and with a lubricant that could easily create a veritable slip and slide, it's nice to have that modifier (fun fact: silicone lubricant can be applied to the bottom of toboggans to increase their speed down a snowy hill).
This bottle can be opened, applied and closed with one hand, and it is fairly easy to control the amount applied. The bottle has a bit of give to it, but you're not going to wind up squeezing out too much as long as you're careful. I've had no problems with leakage, which is fantastic because I would hate to clean this up if there were a big spill.
Silicone lubricants do stain, but something unique about these stains is that they can be removed at any time, even after the fabric has been washed and dried. If the stain has been laundered, simply coat it with more silicone lubricant and allow it to sit half an hour, after which you can continue. If it has not, simply proceed with applying a mixture of 50% dish soap and 50% degreaser, such as Goo Gone or Greased Lightning. Saturate the stained area, and allow it to sit for ten to fifteen minutes. Do not rub the stain, as this could damage the fabric. Wash as usual after the time is up, and you should be free and clear!
My partner and I use this for vaginal sex exclusively, and find it to be the perfect consistency for us. That being said, it is thick enough and slick enough to work for anal penetration as well. As we use only a very small amount to get us going and hate to stop and reapply, JO Premium is perfect for us. Since we often have sex with the fan on, it was a delight to find something that wouldn't dry out in the hot, blowing air. Cleanup is easy - as I said, I just take a wipe to my downstairs, and voila! I am definitely eternally grateful to the friend who gifted me with this fantastic substance, and even though we're the "grab whatever's closest" kind of couple, I rarely want to use anything else.
Follow-up commentaryI still like it32 months after original review
This is still my go-to silicone lubricant. The bottle lasted quite a long time, and remained a good consistency until the end. I'm currently working my way through a newer bottle, and am not planning on switching brands any time soon.
