Smooth Operator

If you're looking for something to save your freshly-shaved skin from a heap of hurt, your search ends here. The fragrance isn't the most pleasant, but it's short-lived and gender neutral, which makes this aftershave that much more versatile. It contains very few ingredients that may elicit an allergic reaction, making it safe for the sensitive skin types that need it the most. It's long-lasting, there's no stickiness or oily residue, and as soon as it dries, you immediately feel protected.

Use

Unless your skin is impervious to all injury, I am sure that you have experienced the painful red bumps that can arise after shaving, often despite your best efforts. This product is a great step towards both prevention and alleviation of irritation. When shaving, I always make sure that I shower first, so that the heat from the water softens my skin and ensures that the hair follicles are less likely to become inflamed as a result of tugging. I shave against the grain despite the fact that it is not recommended, because that is the only way that I can get smooth skin. After shaving, I'm always very wary about how I dry, what sort of panties I put on and how physically active I am directly afterwards. That's where Simply Sensual's After Shave & Wax Protection Mist comes in to play. After air drying, spritz this on to your freshly-shorn skin to close your pores. If you've ever been told to splash cold water on your skin after washing your face, you'll understand the logic behind this - smaller pores make it more difficult for things to enter into your skin and cause problems. Additionally, not only does this aftershave contain anti-fungal and -bacterial agents, which kill anything harmful that you may have missed while washing, but it forms a protective barrier on top of the skin, smoothing, moisturizing and altogether improving its condition.

Front

This product is described as safe for sensitive skin, and though I am allergic to several components commonly found in lotions, I have not had any negative reactions to this Simply Sensual product. There are a few less-than-natural ingredients, such as Butylene Glycol and Benzyl Alcohol. These have both been proven to be harmful in extremely large doses, but since you're not drinking vats of the stuff every day, you should be fine, (provided you pass a spot test). I recommend testing two different spots 24 hours apart if you are concerned that you may be allergic or have not been exposed to these substances. Allergies form after the initial buildup of antibodies after your first exposure, so one test is not enough to ensure that you will not have a reaction. This product also contains Glycerin, which is a concern to some, though the allergy is very rare. It is paraben-free and not tested on animals.

The scent of this aftershave is described as Botanical, and personally I find it to be rather unpleasant. Though it is not overpowering, the aroma is sharply reminiscent of tea tree oil. This does, however, mean that it is suited to both male and female users. In addition, the scent fades very quickly after application, so it does not linger to overpower any other product you may choose to wear. This is appropriate for use on legs, underarms, intimate areas and a generalized "face & body", meaning that it can be used anywhere external that you wish to shave or wax.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

This spray is a very thin liquid similar to most beauty products that are available in misting bottles. For the misting process to work, the contents have to be pretty runny. That being said, the cap does work very well; when I spritz, I get a thin, even coating across my skin, provided I hold it back three or four inches, which is fairly standard for these types of containers. If you use too much, it will run, but it's easy to control how much product you're using.

Misting cap

To the touch, Simply Sensual's botanical aftershave is slicker than water, but it dries quickly when you rub it between your fingers. It dries a little more slowly when sprayed on the skin. After application, your skin does feel as if there is a bit more friction in the areas that are being protected. Personally, I take this to be a good thing, as a more concrete effect really makes me feel like it is working.

Though it contains several essential oils, nothing about this is oily or makes me feel greasy or slimy in any way. The oils also stop the solution from being sticky, which is fantastic because it means that your clothes are free to move naturally after it dries. This makes it easy to apply and forget about.

Taste / Aroma

The smell of this product does not appeal to me, as I mentioned before. I generally do not like floral scents. I was a bit tentative in the beginning, once I noted that the aroma was meant to be botanical, but this goes beyond even that. The scent of tea tree oil is sharp enough that it stings my nose if I apply this product in a confined area, such as a bathroom without a fan. That being said, the smell fades very quickly, which means that it does not provide any real trouble for users, who are not a fan. It is not all that overpowering, provided that you use it within a well-ventilated area, so even the momentary unpleasantness is easy to manage.

The nature of this scent makes it suited to both male and female users, making it incredibly diverse. I did not taste this when wet, but licking an area where it has dried does leave a bitter taste in your mouth for the first ten or fifteen minutes. It fades quickly, and after that, there's no discernible taste.

Performance

After misting on a light coating, it takes maybe two or three minutes to dry - significantly less time if you fan it dry, which I prefer to do. The bottle recommends using this product once per day, but I found that I was beginning to chafe a little bit about 8 hours after. A quick reapplication left me feeling refreshed, and there was minimal irritation to be found at the end of the day. It didn't sting upon application, which was pleasantly surprising. This is likely due to the use of natural alcohols and extracts, instead of harsher chemicals.

The first time I used this product, I did it with a new razor. I nicked myself once, and found that later in the day, this had scabbed over pretty obviously, which never happens. Most of the time, there's no evidence of the cut an hour later, so the aftershave definitely caused the scabbing. That being said, I wasn't itchy or overly red. There were still a few places where I was a little bit irritated, but it wasn't painful or even all that unpleasant to look at. I used this twice a day the day that I shaved and once a day since then, with excellent results. It didn't quite live up to my expectations, but since I was expecting perfection, I'm honestly not too disappointed.

The bottle does say that this aftershave can be sprayed upside down, but the way that the spray nozzle is constructed, this claim didn't seem plausible. I tested it anyways, and I found that holding it upside down not only prevents you from spraying, but it causes the bottle to leak.

Packaging

Simply Sensual's aftershave arrived from Eden in a clear plastic baggie. None had leaked out, so I surmise that it was something about my first use that caused it to leak. The bottle contains 118 mL (or 4 fluid ounces) of solution, and unfortunately I can't give an accurate estimate of how many uses this gives because of the leakage that I experienced. Because you're misting it on, however, it should last for quite some time, particularly if you're only using it for a small surface area.

Simply Sensual

The front of the bottle is quite basic, making it rather discreet. There is nothing indicating that this bottle is in any way related to anything sexual, (which makes sense, because it's not). This would not look out of place in any bathroom, whether it belonged to a male or a female. The bottle itself is clear, with a sticker wrapped all-around. The writing is a dark peacock blue. The front of the bottle is topped by the brand name - Simply Sensual - followed by a small flower and the name of the fragrance, which is botanical. Following that is a product name: "Luxe after shave & wax protection mist for rash-free skin." The Net Weight is also noted, and there is a small circle noting its paraben-free status.

Side - Instructions

The right side of the bottle is by far the most informative. There are no actual directions on how to use this product, which made me a little bit unsure of exactly how much product was needed. I started with about a spritz per two-inch square area, plus a little bit extra at any joint in my skin, where there may be increased rubbing, and I've found that this works quite well. There's no run-off of excess product, but everything is well-coated. This product is safe for all skin types, including sensitive skin, as per the blurb on the bottle.

Side - Ingredients

The left side of the bottle includes a listing of ingredients, which are as follows:

Water, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Polysorbate 20, Lavender Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Cucumber Fruit Extract, Green Tea Leaf Extract, Maticaria Flower Extract, Licorice Root Extract, Echinacea Agustifolia Extract, Wheat Germ Extract, Raspberry Fruit Extract, Willow Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Madonna Lily Bulb Extract, Sage Leaf Extract, Clover Flower Extract, Oat Kernel Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Lavender Oil, Benzyl Alcohol, Polyquaternium-10, Potassium Sorbetat, and Disodium EDTA

Experience

This aftershave has been a fantastic experience for me. No matter what I have tried in the past, I've always been blotchy and sore within a few hours after doing my bikini line. Simply Sensual not only doesn't irritate my skin, but it stopped all of this in its tracks. There's no unpleasant residue, the scent doesn't linger and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. If this keeps performing as well as it has been, I'll definitely be picking up another bottle.
Follow-up commentary
While I still love this spray in terms of its functionality, I was extremely disappointed in the physical construction of the bottle when I brought it with me in a suitcase. I knew that it leaked a little bit, so I taped off the edges of the bottle and stored it in a plastic bag. However, I still lost over half of the bottle's contents when transporting it in my luggage. I've switched the lids on the bottle now, having learned my lesson, so if I ever travel with it again things should be fine.

I've noticed no marked change in the effectiveness of the spray itself - it still does a pretty good job of saving me from most of the irritation - however I have noticed that I have to apply it a bit more frequently. I believe that this may be due to an increase in my activity, so if you're a very active person, you may find yourself needing to spritz some on more than once or twice a day.

A very thorough & thoughtful review! How anyone could give a somewhat useful rating is beyond me! Besides that, I am glad you described the smell & the amount of reapplication you needed, that is very helpful to know. Thanks for the pix, too.
