So, everything being said, I have to rate this product as a 3. It did not work as far as a sexual enhancer, but it was the best tasting additive I have ran into in a long time. It is worth the $5.99 price tag for that regard. This is only my opinion so remember, it's all in the state of mind!
Spanish Fly has been around from what seems the beginning of time. I believe that unless someone has been living under a rock they have at the very least heard of this product, but very few want to admit that they have tried it. I chose this product to purchase for my wife and I to test the "Does it really work?" question.
The Spanish Fly Sex Liquid by Doc Johnson can be used by both men and women. Spanish Fly Drops claims to be an aphrodisiac, which means it is supposed to enhance arousal. The product states that it can be used with any beverage or food. Our preference for this test was normal Coca-Cola. Now, a little bit off topic, the flavor we chose for the Spanish Fly was Hot Cherry. These two combined made the best Cherry Coke. It tasted like the old soda shop version that is long since past.
The ingredients are simple. The product contains Water, Hydrolyzed Corn Starch, Glycerin, Flavor, Citric acid,Quaternium-15,Carmel and Red 40. A little research into the Quaternium-15 tells that it is a quaternary ammonium salt. It is a known allergen and can cause contact dermatitis to some people. It is used as a antimicrobial preservative in many products.
The one thing I want to mention is that the bottle itself, nor the box it came in, has directions for amount. We played with this from two drops up to 20. Of coarse, the flovor and smell became more pronounced depending on the amount.
The Spanish Fly drops were a bit surprising. I expected it to be to be a little bit thicker than it actually is. I squeezed two drops out from the bottle into the palm of my hand and if I tilt my hand, even slightly, it ran right out. It is the consistency of water. Amazingly enough, it does not leave a stickiness behind after drying. Since this is meant to be added to beverages or food and not to be applied to the body, I don't see why anyone would have any reason to have it stay in a certain spot on their body. It is meant to be consumed.
The flip top bottle makes dispensing the Cherry Spanish Fly Drops very easy. It comes out extremely fast, so I would warn you not to squeeze the bottle very hard. When I put it in each of our glasses of Coke-Cola, I treated the bottle like a bottle of Visine, which let me carefully add one drop at a time. Later on, my wife added some more to another glass of Coke and she squeezed to hard, it came streaming out.
After opening the bottle of Spanish Fly, I was impressed that it really did smell like cherries. The aroma of the cherries is very strong. It smells like a cherry cough syrup. Although the smell straight out of the bottle is quite noticeable, it does lessen when added to a drink.
It has a variable taste depending on how much you add to your drink. We did add it to coffee, but I am not personally attracted to flavoring of any kind in my coffee, so that idea was a bust. There is no way I could not notice it in my drink, unless it was said to be Cherry Coke. Even then, the flavor stands out compared to the real thing. This flavor, at least for us, was impossible to give the true "blind" test.
The Hot Cherry flavor we tested has a very sweet flavor to it. This is probably due to the Hydrolyzed Corn Starch ingredient. This ingredient acts as a flavor enhancer and a sugar substitute. Don't let the sweetness fool you, though. There was no stickiness at all when it evaporated on the skin. It was a shock.
This product did not have an arousal effect on either of us. Unfortunately, under those circumstances, it is impossible to determine how long the product would last.
The Cherry Spanish Fly Drops is a product I have the feeling if I spilled my wife would kill me. Not wanting to be tomorrow's headlines I did not spill any. The product looks like it would stain the same as cherry Kool-Aid. The bottle design is a wonderful in keeping it from staining and accidental spills.
The aroma and the taste are the high points of this product. The fact that it did not work on either of us is disappointing. Although the product did give my wife and I the feeling of almost a caffeine rush,it may have been actually a type of sugar rush due to the Hydrolized Corn Starch. It may have also been the mind-set. That being said, the effect was not long lasting.
I did have some higher hopes for this product, as it has been around for ages. I was hoping that this product would have some sort of heightening effect during our love-making time, but I do think that it's all in the state of the mind. We tried it hours before, but it offered no change in the mood or physical effects area, except for the caffeine type rush. The final test was right before our time together and I have to admit, the length of time of love-making was about the same and although my wife always takes me to the heavens, it did not seem to bring me any farther.
Doc Johnson Spanish Fly comes in a box approximately 3.5 inches tall, 1.5 inches wide and 1.25 inches deep. The box lists the ingredients on the bottom by the upc label. The back of the box says it can be used in any drink or food. It also says that the formula is safe and non-toxic.
Now, that being said, the ingredient,Quaternium-15, is listed as an allergen. That was the reason I chose to list it as such. As a note, this chemical is in many products including lip stick, shampoos and soaps. As such, I wouldn't shy away from trying this product unless you have known allergies. The box also says that it sold only as a novelty and has no pharmaceutical aphrodisiac effects. It states that it is made in the USA by Doc Johnson Enterprises from California.
The bottle is exactly 3 inches high and made from plastic. On arrival, it was sealed in plastic wrap around the cap and the bottle and also sealed between the cap and bottle. It is exactly 1 fluid oz. or 29.57 ML. in quantity. It has a flip lid and a small dispensing hole inside.
I do believe that this product does make the best flavored Coke. I also think it would be good to mix with small amounts of water to make great flavored ice cubes or freeze pops. I think this product would be a great one to experiment with as far as its uses. I am very curious as to the taste of the rest of their flavors and what uses they can produce.
This product was named for a Blister Beetle that contains cantharidin. This chemical is actually known to help men to keep a longer erection. Although this actually works, the chemical is actually a toxin and can cause death. The dosage between poison and a benefit is too close for practical usage in humans. This chemical is banned in the United States and other countries, except for animal care and wart removal.
It has been an interesting journey from beginning to end. My conclusions on this product- if you think it will, then it will. As far as a fountain of youth, that will forever remain a mystery.
*I didn't have any expectations with this product, I looked at it more as "A rite of passage" that I missed out on as a kid. Similiar to buying your first pack of cigarettes at 18 or going to a bar at legal age.
I have always wondered about this product. It has been around forever. I believe God secretly made this on his seventh day of creation as he was supposed to be resting. It is unfortunate that it did not work for either of us. I wish we would have been able to test this product better, but the wonderful smell and taste made it impossible.
I love the flavoring it added to my cola. It makes a true old time fountain soda when they added syrup for flavor. The nostalgia alone is worth buying this again.
I wanted to test if it stained, but I could not bring myself to do it. It reminds me of red Kool-Aid or red freeze pops, and I know when those spill, it doesn't come out. I will probably test it for the follow up as well as find a recipe for using this in food.
I was impressed by the product for its great taste and smell and the fact that it had another use because it didn't work as intended. The only thing I did notice was that it had the effect on me like I drank one of those "coffee shots", the ones that are supposed to give you a bit of a zip. That was a short lived feeling, though.*
Follow-up commentaryI still like it3 months after original review
There is not much to say about this one. My wife polished off the bottle when she kept adding it to her cola drinks. She is bound and detemined to purchase more and many different flavors.
Neither of us ever thought that the product would do what it claimed. I never noticed any change in my wife (nor did my wife) no matter how much was added. We (more she) liked it more as a flavoring then a product to "spice" things up in the bedroom.

Thanks for the great review.
I must say that I am not surprised it didn't work, seems like none of these types of products do. Testing is fun though.

I did have a blast testing this one. For me, it closed a myth.

Very well-researched, from the ingredients, to the history of the aphrodisiac, to the attempt at a blind trial! I had never heard of this before, (and I still won't buy it) but I genuinely enjoyed reading your review.

Excellent review. The product does seem silly, but fun, and I appreciated the entertaining review.
Fuck it.
At least it's good in soda.

So real Spanish Fly is illegal and this is basically water, sugar, flavour, preservatives and colour? No wonder it didn't work.

Great review. I may get some just to try it with Coke, lol. I love cherry coke.
