Butter me up, Babe!

The body butter is a great alternative to average lotions, especially if you like thicker, creamier moisturizers. Just do your best to pick a good scent for you.

Use

The Dona Body Butter is another of the many products in the Dona line by JO (which is known for its lubricants). The body butter is thicker than lotion and may be an option for those who like creams over traditional lotions. The body butter works to soften skin. It lasts long and you will see results as soon as after one usage. This will work for anyone in need of a moisturizer, those who like to have complete sets of body products and those who like a slightly floral scent with small fruit tones.

The ingredients in the body butter are fairly standard. You have oils, thickeners, preservatives and scents in the moisturizer. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to consider a skin test. To do a skin test, place a small amount of body butter on an innocuous location such as the back of your hand or forearm. Watch the area for the next day or two to watch for reactions. If you do not have any adverse reactions (like redness, itching, welts, etc.) then you should be fine to use it. However, some people may not want to use this body butter right after shaving. Since shaving causes micro-abrasions, some of the ingredients can create a slight burning sensation on the shaved area.

Also, this body butter is said to be aphrodisiac infused. There is not hard science on the validity of these ingredients as aphrodisiacs. However, the body butter can still make you feel good about yourself and make you more touchable to your partner.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

Body butter is much thicker than the average lotion. To start, lotions are generally in bottle with a push down nozzle. Body butters, on the other hand, come in low but wide jars. You open the jar and scoop up the amount of product you want to use. Because your hands make direct contact with the body butter, it's always a plus to wash your hands before using it. This decreases the chance of it obtaining an "ick" factor as you use it.

It takes two hands to open the jar, but once open you can grab and apply product with a single finger. It is thick and creamy. If you put a glob on your finger it will stay there (unless you put so much on your finger the glob becomes to heavy and falls off due to gravity). So long as you don't grab a huge glob, the body butter will stay adhered to your finger.

The body butter is white with a slight purplish-grey shade from the pomegranate. It spreads easily on the skin. Like most lotions, you'll feel a little greasy after application, especially if you put on a lot, but the feeling will decrease in 5 or so minutes. Then your skin will feel mostly normal. If you put some on and then sweat you'll feel the body butter become slick on your skin, but this is a normal occurrence for most lotion products. Overall, there is nothing about the texture or physical properties of this body butter that make it inconvenient or annoying.

Taste / Aroma

The body butter is not edible. It is the pomegranate scent. It is interesting that the scent changes with the products. This could be unavoidable given all the different mediums Dona has. For example, if you have multiple products in the Dona line, you may notice that the massage oil smells different from the body butter and so on. It all smells similar (except the edible products, they take on a too sweet candy-like smell and taste). The body butter smells more floral than fruit in nature.

I would not classify it as a fresh scent like citrus or cucumber melon. The floral tone was not really expected given that its pomegranate. It doesn't really smell like pomegranate either. It's not an offensive smell, but might surprise you. It's... heavier in nature. The smell is present but not over powering. The scent lingers on the skin hours after it dries; you just have to put your nose to your skin to smell it. If you apply too much you may be one of those people that other can smell from down the street (only until it dries, though).

Performance

There is one thing to note when using body butters in general: a little goes a long way. Some users new to body butters can go through them quickly because they apply too much product. Because of the consistency of the body butter, it can really spread on the skin. Start with a very small amount of product first to see how much mileage it gets you and adjust from there. It will make your jar last much longer this way.

The body butter does work to soften the skin. Even with one use, you'll notice that especially dry areas like the elbows and knees will feel softer for a couple of days. I don't think it does a better job than other products out there; it's a standard result. I think body butters do a better job than lotions, but this could be a personal bias.

I'd recommend not using this lotion if you're going to the gym, going to be out in the heat, or will get exposed to rain. You will get that slick feeling because you'll feel the oils in the lotion revive a bit. Also, don't just slather it on your legs after a shave before testing it on a smell area of your leg. It might cause a slight burning sensation because of the micro-abrasions shaving causes.

Packaging

The body butter came wrapped in plastic to prevent it from spilling all over any other products you may have bought in your order. Then you'll see the jar. The jar does have a foil seal under the plastic lid to further prevent spills. The body butter looks like this:

The lid is easy to remove. The sides of it are textured so you can grip it easily. Because of the thickness of the body butter, it is unlikely to spill if the lid is screwed on tightly. It is fairly discreet. The only potentially risque thing on the jar is the "aphrodisiac infused ritual" claim. Other than that, it's fine to keep out in open view.

Special Features

The body butter, along with other Dona products, is claimed to have aphrodisiac properties. Again, it's not proven through science if the ingredients in the body butter have these properties. Still, you could have a placebo effect.

Experience

If you've been reading my Dona reviews, you'll know that I have been less than impressed with most of the products I have. However, the body butter is one of my favorites. I am a fan of thicker lotions like body butters and creams. I like their texture and how a little product can spread over a large area. In general, creams and body butters are better for massages because they tend to last longer for a massage session as opposed to lotion.

Overall, I am happy with how this product softens. I am just not a fan of the pomegranate scent. I did not expect those floral tones. I much prefer the mangosteen scent and I wish they had a more fresh scent available.
