A Tropical Treat! (Camu Camu)

When it comes to fragrance, this candle can't be beat! As for its massage-related prowess, well...it leaves a little to be desired. If it was a normal candle it'd have a five-star rating from me, but its weird residue and slow melt-time brought it down to a four.

Use

System Jo's Dona massage candle is a small candle with soft, slow-melting wax that is designed to be used during a massage - simply pour a bit of wax into your hands or onto your partner's skin, and use it like you would oil or lotion.

As fire is involved, be careful to set your candle on a stable surface, away from any flammable objects. You should also perform your massage away from any delicate fabrics such as silk or lace, as the wax leaves a filmy residue that can be difficult to remove. This candle is also SOY-BASED so anyone with soy allergies or who wishes to avoid soy products should steer clear! As it doesn't contain beeswax, however, it is more suitable for vegans (the label does not specifically say it is vegan, but I could not find any animal-derived products in the ingredients list).

Because of its great smell and luxurious feel, this product is a great mood enhancer for a romantic evening. While this particular scent will not appeal to those who don't like coconut, there are other scents available that could work for them.

Texture / Consistency / Thickness / Viscosity

When cool/unlit, the candle wax feels slightly softer than a normal candle, with a little give. Melted, it is very thin and smooth, and it thickens quickly when exposed to cold air. it is neither oily nor greasy in either state.

If poured directly onto the skin, it will run and possibly make a mess if it makes it all the way down, so go slowly and be prepared for emergency cleanup should something go awry. Being prepared is also important because of the residue left behind by the wax; I am unsure if this is normal, as this is my first massage candle, but a thin layer of wax remains on whatever the liquid touches, and its pretty annoying to remove from fabrics! It also feels unnatural on the skin, from which it is easily removed with soap and water.

Taste / Aroma

While the scent is listed as Camu Camu, the Dona line scent names actually refer to the aphrodisiac with which the product is infused; they are scented with complimentary fragrances. This candle has a nice tropical scent, very reminiscent of coconut with a slight citrusy tang to it. It's very gently and lightly sweet, and I found it very calming. The scent is barely noticeable when the candle is unlit, but when burning it is pleasantly strong. When massaged into the skin, it maintained its scent for about twenty minutes or until the massaged area was washed with soap and water.

This candle is not meant to be ingested, so do not eat it or use the wax internally! I didn't taste it and neither should you.

Performance

This candle performed very well initially. As a regular candle (aka 'before I poured out the wax for a massage'), it burned brightly and steadily, and filled the room with its lovely scent. I did find that it took a little longer than I'd have liked to produce enough wax for a shoulder massage.

Once enough wax was melted, it was very easy to pour from the container, and it felt pleasantly warm on my skin. It absorbed into skin pretty smoothly, but left a pale residue on the skin that felt unnatural and uncomfortable. After the film was wiped away, however, my skin felt moisturized, silky and soft.

Packaging

Like all products from the Dona line, this candle's label features a black lace pattern overlaid upon a solid color (in this case purple). The tub is extremely sturdy, and you could drop it with melted wax inside with no worries about leakage or breakage (although of course you should avoid dropping it if you can!).

Along with an ingredients list and some flowery language about the nature of aphrodisiacs, the labels feature instructions and a warning (pictured in the "Uses" section of this review). Other than the word "aphrodisiacs" the container is completely discreet, as expected for a candle.
    • Discreet looking packaging

    • Very informative packaging
