Tristan Taormino's "Rough Sex" : a meditation on Sex-Positivity in these Trying Times

Taormino's "Rough Sex" is the product of an empowered woman searching to empower her performers (and by extension, her viewers), with the well-meaning strategy of consensual and informed rough sex. Interviews abound in this two and a half hour long feature. Somehow though, the lack of tension and high-stakes in this well-intentioned film dooms it to a rather predictable, over-thought death.

Pros
Well-shot, intelligent, attractive performers, respectful, thoughtful.
Cons

I found you review very helpful, tho hard to read. As a sex positive porn junkie, the kind of porn you were comparing it to made my stomach hurt, as it is exactly the type of porn that doesn't do it for me in ANY way. I have to see both partners enjoying what they are doing in order to get off - proven by engorged genitals and honest orgasms. For me, this goes for any type of porn, gonzo, gay, rough, whatever. So, it is always interesting to hear other views on what gets people off. I can understand your view, though, I obviously don't share it - and please don't take that as a jab at you, it certainly isn't. Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that, as a person who enjoys rough sex, I can tell from your review that this is exactly the kind of porn I enjoy.

Awesome feedback! Lots of respect for what you're saying - and I think that overall, your attitude is the far healthier one to have.

I think that what's valuable about the gonzo films is hard to pin down, and I may not have done the best job in writing about them, either. It's like, in the best of them, the filmmakers are so UNGUARDED. Almost sociopathically so. There's a part of me that is fascinated to watch that process unfold, though in my heart I know it's also an acknowledgement or even a tacit approval of a damaging, frightening aspect of the human experience.

My only problem with Taormino's film was that it felt a bit over-sanitized (except for Francesca Le, who was as wild as hell, and Derrick Pierce, who "went there" himself). Thanks so much for your thoughts . . . I'd be curious to hear what you think of the film when you get a chance to watch it!

I have since put it in my wish list. Smile I'll let you know when I have a chance to check it out. I'm so glad that you received my comments for what they were.

I'm glad that you enjoy writing reviews of porn for Eden, but your review says a lot about a lot of movies and very little about the DVD rough sex. I don't find it helpful at all for potential customers that might want to more know more about the movie itself. Sorry you didn't find it your cup of tea.

I just finished the movie, and I'm working on my own review. It will be up soon.

I loved reading your review, but I agree with Tiny Tease. You included too much info on other movies. This was supposed to be a review about one DVD. While you talked about the basic scene set ups, you left a lot of questions for me, the customer looking for DVDs to buy. Some of the more basic and simple questions being: Were there any bonus features?, What is the running time? Is this DVD worth the cost for the average consumer of porn, when so much is available for free these days? , etc.
A few comparisons to other movies is fine, even welcomed for some one like me, but your info on the actual movie you were given to review stopped half way through your rant about other " rough sex" porn.
Don't get me wrong, I love your writing. If I were reading your blogs I would not have had any thing critical to say. I know that you are a writer and, having been in a five year relationship with one, I completely understand how you can easily get carried away with words.

I'm a little late here, but great review. I'd call it more of a meditation on the rough sex porn genre, but that's what I liked about it. Well done!
