Punk Rock Pin-Ups! :D
I found this book to be beautiful, both in the photographs and the message of "being yourself" that is conveyed throughout the story the pictures tell. It is small enough to display on a coffee table (If your open and comfortable to the nudity).

Pros
Beautiful, glossy photographs, unique, real people.
Cons
Nothing. I loved it!
This is a BEAUTIFUL book! It's the perfect edition to someone's art collection, or as a coffee table book, or for artists as a reference. It's also the perfect excuse to bust out your own camera and be your own pin up goddess!
This hardcover book measures about 10 inches long and about 8 inches. It contains 160 glossy, high quality photographs of real women being real women. I didn't know anything about the Suicide Girls before reviewing this product. The premise of the book is that it is meant to reflect the same principles and values as the website-allowing the women on the site to express themselves, using their bodies as the medium. The book was put together to show that there isn't a need to conform to the ideals of sexuality that the media portrays. It encourages both women and men to be who they want to be, to do what they want to do, and explore themselves.
The book is split into two parts. The first half of the book is the portraits that the artist, Missy Suicide, has taken of the various models. The models are shown in various states of undress, with several full frontal nudity shots. The photos are displayed in various formats, ranging from full page spreads, to collage collections. Each page outlines who the model is, and you get familiar with the names, and bodies that go along with each of them. The photographer uses the basic premise of the classic pin up poses, but manages to take it to the next level of creativity, giving the classic a bit of a punk twist. She also uses a variety of locations and lighting options to draw the audiences attention to the many gorgeous attributes and features that the women possess. The women are a blend of body types, sizes, colors- they are unique and represent the diversity that exists.
The second half of the book contains self portraits that the girls themselves provided. They are all given the opportunity to share a little bit more about themselves. It contains snippets of interviews, journal entries, blogs, poems and just their own thoughts. It allows you to come to understand the women that are in the photographs. Once you've read through the different stories that the women share I highly recommend going back and looking through the photographs again, I felt that I found new insight and understanding into the women through the blend of the comments and their photographs.
I loved the book. I found it so incredibly empowering and unique. Everyone can be sexy- in their own bodies, and within their own framework of sexuality. I can't wait to breakout my camera, explore the ideas shared in the book, along with trying of some of the different pose ideas for myself

Follow-up commentary
2 months after original review
This book has been an incredible conversation starter. It's beautiful glossy pages and even more gorgeous girls spark the interest of everyone who flips through it. I still find this to be one of the most innovative and inspiring works of "pin-up" photography available. It uses real women with real bodies and unique perspectives on life... which made them seem more real to me, and allowed me to connect with them on a certain level. Not to mention the website on which this book is based encourages women to be themselves, express their sexuality and every aspect of who they are in whatever medium brings them release. I find the messages and the medium used to be both empowering and liberating and choose to use SuicideGirls and photography as a stepping stone to my own sexual journey and liberation. A fantastic addition to any art lovers collection!
