Nina Hartley's Guide To G-Spot Sex review
Ultimately, I was disappointed with this guide. Although it did have good information on the subject, its poor production quality and unrealistic scenarios made it embarrassing to watch.
Published:
Pros
Useful information, interesting demo that shows the G-spot, Nina Hartley is great.
Cons
Terrible production quality, silly scenarios.
Nina Hartley’s “Guides” are always hard for me to review. This is because I always end up having conflicting reactions after viewing them. On the one hand, I love Nina and think she is wonderful as a porn star and sex educator. She is always articulate, funny and warm, and her guides do contain useful information on her chosen subject. On the down side, the production quality of the DVDs are always amateurish: bad sound and cinematography, terrible cutting, and silly scripts that make Nina and her co-hosts look ridiculous. Nina Hartley's Guide to G-spot Sex|Nina Hartley's Guide To G-Spot Sex is no different.
The opening discussion features Nina and her co-host Carmen Luvana on the subject of the G-spot. Carmen acts like she knows little on the subject by asking Nina questions. Nina is articulate as she enlightens the audience on what the G-spot is|G-Spot - What and Where? and where it is located (using an anatomical map on the female pelvis), as well as how to stimulate it. Carmen misses her cues often, and flubs her lines, which is distracting and takes away from Nina’s credibility. It makes you wonder why they didn’t do a few takes.
The next scene features a demo with “nurse” Nina in a PVC nurse outfit and her patient Melissa Lauren, a sexy French girl in a gynecological chair. Nina warms Melissa up with foreplay and cunnilingus first, for the G-spot only “shows” itself once a woman is aroused. Nina then inserts a speculum in Melissa’s vagina to show the audience the spongy tissue of the G-spot. She later inserts an anal speculum and says that you can massage the G-spot indirectly with a more subtle pressure from the anus. The scene changes without warning to Nina and Melissa on the floor as Nina demos various G-spot toys|G-spot vibrators including the Slimline G|Slimline G deluxe vibrator, a G-spot dildo made out of lucite, and a strap-on dildo on Melissa. Nina demonstrates the best positions for reaching the G-spot during sex.
After a short interlude with Nina and Carmen, it is time for Nicole Sheridan and Voodoo, a couple who have sex with each other pretty exclusively on-screen. Nicole acts as if she doesn’t know where her G-spot is and that they are exploring G-spot sex for the first time (which is of course ridiculous). Voodoo tries various G-spot toys on Nicole before having sex in various positions that facilitate the best angles for stimulating the G-spot|G-Spot Stimulation - G-Spot 101 Guide. I have watched Nicole and Voodoo before and this scene doesn’t have as much sizzle factor as the other ones I’ve seen.
The DVD includes an interview with Nina, which basically relates her philosophy about sex and sums up what she has already said about the G-spot. It also contains a Behind-the-Scenes and Bonus Scene, both of which are unrelated to the topic, and therefore are not very entertaining or useful. Ultimately, I was disappointed with this guide. Although it did have good information on the subject, its poor production quality and unrealistic scenarios made it embarrassing to watch. And, although Nina does touch on the subject of female ejaculation, there are no demos as this is a subject for another guide by Nina. For those reasons I had to give it a low score.

Follow-up commentary

I was pretty hard on this DVD in my initial review. That is mainly because, being a filmmaker I can't help but point out the problems with the film-making technique (or lack of it) itself. I also have a problem with films that are first of all a documentary, and then switch to fantasy while still pretending to be documentary. It just seems a bit misleading.

Nina's Guide to G-spot does has some great information, however, and I believe it would be helpful for those just learning or exploring their G-spot. The speculum scene is fascinating and worth the price of purchase alone. She does explain the G-spot well and uses anatomical charts as well as hands-on exploration that you can't find unless you are doing this to someone else, so that is invaluable. She also talks about women's expectations when it comes to their G-spots and that each woman will feel the different, will want to stimulate their G-spot differently, and will have the different results. Nina in fact admits that she has never experienced "female ejaculation" and that she enjoys indirect pressure on her G-spot to stimulate it. So, it is good to see other woman's POV on G-spot stimulation, especially one who is so experienced sexually as Nina Hartley is. And, she really is a doll!

Sounds like they're trying to combine a truly useful, professional guide with some standard porn and the two aren't meshing very well. I am, however, interested in the scene where she actually SHOWS off Melissa's g-spot--that alone might be very useful. Can you actually see it?
-
Thanks for your comments Dame Demi. Yes, you can actually see the soft tissue as it swells out of Melissa's vagina. It is quite obvious and they do get a good close-up of it. It looks like a soft, swollen peach pit (wrinkled). For this reason and also that the DVD is quite informative I gave it a 3 rating. I would have liked to give it more. And, yes the how-to and porn don't seem to mesh well in this format. I think it could if done a different way. I have reviewed how-to dvds on Vulva Massage that seem to this in a very effective way. All in all I still love Nina, but wish she'd get some professional filmmaking help!

"Nina then inserts a speculum in Melissa’s vagina to show the audience the spongy tissue of the G-spot." That sounds fantastic. Perhaps the bonus scenes were meant so you could play around and find your g-spot after watching the technical scenes?
-
Well, the bonus scene wasn't about G-spot stimulation, and was meant as masturbation material. But it would have been nice to have been more on topic. Usually, Nina's bonus scenes as, such as "Threesomes: Two Girls and a Guy".
