I need more pegging!

This smart sexy guide to the increasingly popular art of pegging is not without flaws, but it's a fun and educational place to start.

extremely useful review
I bought this book shortly after my boyfriend first expressed an interest in pegging, (male anal penetration by a female partner, for the uninitiated). I had never experienced anal play of any kind, and as a straight female, the concept of being on the "giving" end of penetration rather than the "receiving" end was new to me. This book was my introduction to the subject, and I would definitely recommend it to any first-timer.

That said, the title is a bit misleading: this is less a book about pegging techniques than an introduction to male-focused anal play for straight couples. After a brief introduction, it begins with a list of what anal play is not (issues of sexual orientation, pain, and cleanliness are briefly discussed). The next three chapters provide an anatomical and physiological explanation for why various forms anal penetration can be so pleasurable. It's worthy of note that I got bored and skipped over much of the anatomy lesson, as it wasn't new information for me, but it might be very informative to a reader without as much knowledge of male sexual anatomy.

The next section discuss communication for couples regarding male anal penetration. Common concerns are addressed, with useful suggestions and communication tips. Manual and oral penetration, and the use anal sex toys are discussed in detail in subsequent chapters, with an entire chapter devoted to harness and strap-on dildo shopping.

The part of this book I found somewhat disappointing was the actual chapter on pegging. Given that this is (supposedly) a book dedicated entirely to strap-on play, only a few pages are actually dedicated to tips, techniques, positions, etc. This book was very helpful right up until we were actually ready for strap-on sex, but beyond that point, I had to look elsewhere for information.

The last section of the book offers a shopping guide for sex toys, a list of online resources and suggestions for further reading. I was initially concerned at the lack of discussion of safe sex practices throughout the book, given that anal play can carry unique risks. But this last section also includes a very helpful section on protection and prevention, including a chart listing the specific health risks of various acts.

All in all, this book a great introduction to male anal play for straight couples. It's very friendly, engaging, and downright hilarious at times, and won't be overwhelming to beginners. That said, if you're already experienced in this domain, you probably won't find much new material here. I didn't find the included erotica particularly arousing either... it struck me as very blatant and contrived.

A note with regards to audience: this book would be better titled "The Straight Couple's Guide to Strap-On Sex". It is explicitly aimed at heterosexual couples. It also focuses entirely on male anal penetration, with only brief mention of other possibilities for strap-on play.
Follow-up commentary
It's been over a year since my partner and I began to experiment with anal play and pegging, and we've pretty well graduated beyond the need for how-to guides, but I still find this book useful. The safety section is a great quick-and-dirty reference, the first few chapters provide a lot of solid basic information, and the resources are very helpful as well. I pull something new (or something I had forgotten about) out of this book every time I pick it up.

If nothing else, it's worth it for the erotic story featuring pegging on rollerskates.

I found Morin's "Anal Pleasure & Health" and especially Lotney's "The Ultimate Guide to Strap-On Sex" to be very useful once we'd explored the basics.

Great review! This is on my wishlist and should work great for us, since the hubby is VERY inexperienced with anal play.
