The Little Lady with a Powerful Secret

I've been lusting after the Matryoshka since I first saw it over 6 months ago, and I'm so glad I finally got the chance to try it. I had high expectations, and I wasn't disappointed. It has all the features I look for in a clit vibrator, and the strong vibrations and unique shape work really well for me.

Use

Matryoshka is a small vibrator that works best for clitoral stimulation. The tip can be inserted for some shallow vaginal penetration, and might work well for teasing, but won't be enough to satisfy most users. I feel comfortable inserting the tip anally while keeping a firm grip on the large base, but the manual warns against this, so use your own judgment.

The small size, unusual shape, quiet vibrations and charging case make this one of the most discreet toys I have seen. It is also perfect for travel, thanks to the lockable controls and international plug adapeters.

Matryoshka is totally waterproof, so you can enjoy some playtime in the shower or tub.

Material / Texture

Matryoshka is made from silicone. It is non-porous, phthalate free, hypoallergenic, and odourless.

The silicone is a thin skin over the hard inner workings of the toy, so Matryoshka is not flexible at all. This is great for me, since I like a lot of pressure. The silicone is slightly squishy. It has a very smooth, velvety, matte finish, with almost no drag. It doesn't attract lint. The silicone feels quite similar to Lelo or Je Joue toys, but feels just a hint more silky to me.

The toy is not textured. There is a very slight seam around the sides, which I can barely feel with my fingers. It's not noticeable at all during use.

The bottom of the base is made from plastic.

Design / Shape / Size

This vibrator's shape is inspired by a matryoshka, or Russian nesting doll.

It also reminds me of a board game piece. It doesn't look like a vibrator at first glance.

The overall length is 3 1/4 inches. Most of the toy is made up of the large, curved base, which houses the controls. It's 2 inches wide, and fits nicely into my palm with my fingers wrapped around it, providing an easy-to-grip handhold. The base is topped with a small rounded tip, which is 1 inch wide and 1 1/2 inches long. The tip contains the motor, and is the part of the toy that is used for stimulation.

The design is similar to Form 4, but smaller.

Because the usable portion is so small, the Matryoshka is really best for external use. The shape and size work perfectly for me as a clitoral vibrator. The tip can be inserted vaginally, but isn't large enough to provide more than some slight teasing for most people. My G-spot is only about an inch inside my vagina, so Matryoshka is able to reach the area, but is too short to thrust against it and too narrow to apply pressure while stationary. Although the manual warns against anal usage, the base is wide enough that I personally had no concerns about inserting the tip anally. I definitely found it more stimulating anally than vaginally, but the shape and size still didn't do a whole lot for me. I'll be sticking to clitoral use in the future.

Functions / Performance / Controls

Controls

Matryoshka is controlled by two buttons, located near the top of the base. They are easy to press with my thumb while I am holding the toy, and they don't get bumped accidentally. Pressing either button will turn the toy on. The bottom button controls the speeds and the top button controls the patterns: slow waving, fast waving, pulsing, and fast pulsing. You can adjust the speed for each pattern. Holding either button turns the vibrations off. Matryoshka doesn't remember the last setting you used, and will always turn onto low, steady vibrations.

Matryoshka arrives with the controls locked, so you'll have to unlock it before you can use it. Just hold both buttons down for 5 seconds, until there is a brief vibration. You can lock it the same way, and you'll know it's safely locked when the light goes out.

Vibrations

Matryoshka's vibrations work quite well for me. They are medium in pitch; not extremely deep, but not buzzy either. The vibrations are nice and strong. The motor is in the tip of the toy, so the vibrations are strongest there, right where you need them. Since the toy is so small, the vibrations do travel throughout it, and can lead to numb fingers. Matryoshka is very quiet and won't be heard through a door. I went back and forth between 1 bee or 2, but decided to err on the side of caution with 2.

I've tried a lot of similar toys, and Matryoshka is on the higher end of strength in comparison, but not the strongest one I've found. Matryoshka is quite similar in power and frequency to Form 4. It's not quite as strong as Form 2. It feels a little stronger than Siri, and a bit higher in pitch. It's stronger than Bcurious or the Seed. It is slightly weaker than MiMi, and not quite as deep.

Charging

Matryoshka is rechargeable. It has a very nice charging base with a cover, so you don't have to worry about leaving your toy lying out while it charges. It also comes in very handy if I'm charging the toy at night while I'm in bed, so the flashing light doesn't annoy me. There are metal contacts on the base of the toy and on the charging base, so you just have to set the toy on its base to charge it. This is my favourite method of charging. It's very easy, and no charging port means there are no openings where water can get in.

4 different plug adapters are included, which is great for those who live overseas, or for travelling. I'm not actually sure which countries they are for, but you can see them in the picture at the bottom of the review and check if the one you need is included. Before charging the toy for the first time you'll have to attach the right plug to the charging cord, than attach the cord to the back of the charging base.

While the toy is charging, the light beneath the silicone will flash. You'll know it's charged when the light turns off. It is recommended that you charge Matryoshka for 8 hours before your first use. After that, a charge will take 2 hours. The manual says that the toy shouldn't be left on the charger for more than 24 hours, but according to Kayla's descriptive review that is a misprint, and it's safe to keep Matryoshka stored on the charging base.

A charge will last for up to 2 hours. It won't last quite that long if you're like me and always use it on high. I was able to get several uses out of it before it needed to be recharged, though. If the battery starts to run out during use, the light will flash to let you know. The vibrations will also weaken before the toy dies, and not just cut off suddenly.

Care and Maintenance

Matryoshka can be cleaned with soap and water or toy cleaner. It's easy to wash, since it's waterproof, and there are no crevices where gunk could collect. You can sterilize the silicone by wiping it down with a 10% bleach solution.

Silicone is compatible with water or oil based lubes. Silicone lube can damage silicone toys.

Matryoshka can be stored in it's charging case, in the included storage pouch, or in the box. I just keep mine in my toybox. Silicone toys can be stored together, and with hard materials like glass, wood, or metal. Store other soft materials like jelly or TPR separately to avoid material reactions.

Packaging

Matryoshka comes in a sturdy, dark purple, cardboard box. It arrives with a small paper sleeve around one end, with a picture of a woman holding Matryoshka. She's wearing a mini skirt and a fascinator, with necklaces obscuring her nipples. Some product features are printed in small letters on the side. Once this outer sleeve is removed, the packaging is very discreet, with no marking other than the company name in gold letters on the lid.

Inside the box, Matryoshka rests inside it's charging case. A ribbon placed beneath it can be pulled to help lift it from the box. Once that is removed, you can open the inner box. Here you'll find the charging cord, plug adapters, storage pouch, instruction manual, information pamphlet, and warranty card.

The storage pouch is made from a soft, tan fabric, with a drawstring closure. The company name is printed on the front. The pouch is perfectly sized for the toy, so you won't be able to fit any extras inside.

The instructions are basic, but include everything you need to know. They are printed in seven languages.

The pamphlet has information about the company, and it's founder Rianne Swierstra. There are pictures and information about their two current products (Matryoshka and Forbidden Fruit) and a tease for their upcoming product, called Kisa. They call it "the world's very first intimate sex toy jewellery" and it appears to be a gold ring. The pamphlet features some beautiful photographs of partially nude models holding the toys.

The warranty card is inside a small envelope. There is a one year warranty from the date of purchase. You will need proof of purchase, and can email their customer service team, or return the product to the retailer where you purchased it.
