While this may be a great toy for a beginner because of the retrieval string its poor design may be a turn off to the more advanced users. The best function of this toy is that it can be worn in public completely discreetly but make sure you have some privacy for removal as they are noisy.

Retrieval string not completely covered Noisy when not inserted
Typically Ben Wa Balls are inserted into the vagina to exercise your vaginal muscles. Usually the muscle referred to as the Kegel is the targeted muscle. With repetition many woman have found that it had enhanced their sex and orgasms. Some are made with weights inside the balls that can be felt moving around within the balls. The best way to use these are vaginally. Although the packaging does suggest using them anally, I would not recommend it. I will explain further within the design area of this review. They are pushed into the vagina one at a time which can be a bit tricky as the balls are attached to each other. They can be worn almost anywhere as they are worn internally and can not be seen by anyone. I do want to mention that they are extremely discreet when inserted and they can not be heard but when they are not they do make a rather loud noise. The noise is from the weights inside the balls moving around and bumping up against the outside plastic balls. They can be used by anyone from beginner to advanced woman, although they are a great option to start out with since it does have a retrieval cord.
Although this toy is listed as being made out of plastic, I am not completely convinced. I have used a few different toys made out of different materials that appeared to be what they were labeled as but this one doesn't seem right to me. It is listed as plastic that rates an 8 out of 10 on the safety scale. The balls themselves have a smooth velvety feel which leads me to believe that it has some sort of coating on the plastic. Although it is said to be an 8 out of 10 on the safety scale I can most certainly see UTI's in my future if I continue to use these. It is listed as being non porous but I lack the bravery to risk the impending doom of burning, itching and a lovely trip to the Dr.s office. Typically in this situation I would recommend the use of a condom, but I'm not sure how anyone could do this. It would be hard to tie off a condom because of the retrieval string. It is also important to mention that the balls are hypo-allergenic, latex free and phthalates free.
While I did enjoy the velvety smooth texture of the toy, the lack of design has really ended my interest in this toy and my search for the perfect set of ben wa balls. They are designed to be used repeatedly and with use over time a difference in the kegel muscles will be felt. While this is the design, the material gives me a lot of hesitation to actually do this as I feel they could be porous.
They are also designed with a retrieval string. This is what initially gave me the final push to purchase this product and boy was I disappointed. The retrieval string connects the two balls together, and also allows for a small portion of string to hang out of the vagina like the string of a tampon. When you're ready to remove them pull on the string (fairly gently) and they will come right out. The retrieval string is great because it allows for easy removal. If you've used a set with no removal string it can be a little difficult. The downside to the retrieval string is it's poor design. The string is slightly smaller than what you would find for strings on a hoodie. The ball's string is coated with the same velvety smooth material that coats the balls themselves. The problem is that the covering doesn't cover all of the string that you would pull on to remove the balls. The end is completely uncovered. This is why I suggested not using these anally. I could see this part of the string getting rather dirty really quickly.
The size of the balls is probably the best thing about them as they are about 4 1/2" in diameter. They were a little difficult to slip in so I did use some caution while inserting. I found it much easier to insert while laying down on a bed with my legs bent. When inserted they create a great amount of pressure within the vagina which is a great stimulator to start the night or add a little excitement while doing your usual errands. They are extremely discreet and will only be heard if removed so just be sure not to have to take them out in a public restroom because you will be heard.
This toy is fairly easy to clean. I typically wash mine with warm water and soap. I then allow them to air dry completely before placing them back in their original packaging. Make sure that you wash the retrieval string well because some of it is left uncovered. I would not suggest using a towel to dry the balls because they are lint magnets. To store this toy I place it back in it's original packaging and then inside of a dresser drawer.
I personally enjoyed using a water based lube but you can also use oil and silicone based lubes depending on your preferences.
I find that keeping the packaging makes it easier to store. The packaging is quite simple. It is clear plastic that opens up by pulling apart with a spot for the balls to fit right into. It has a purple background and a naked woman, although no nudity is showing. It somewhat proudly displays that the toy was designed by women for women, which makes me wonder who are these women? It also entices women with a statement endorsing "please yourself anytime, anyplace!"
While my experience wasn't a bad one, I know my own sensitivities and will have to pass on future use. I know just from past experiences that with continual use which is essentially what they are designed for, I will be in for a whole lot of pain with UTI's and doctor visits. I would suggest that if anyone else has the same sensitivities to rethink purchasing this item.
Follow-up commentaryI still don't like it3 months after original review
I've tried to use these a few times since my original review. I've found that I am completely torn on Ben Wa Balls all together. I personally prefer the feeling of the balls without the retrieval string but actually prefer the convenience of having it available to use. I can not fully understand why these actually lack a coating on the entire retrieval string and I've tried with little success to keep the uncovered portion really clean.
