Made of Silicone, the Love Rider has the usual pros and cons associated with silicone toys; the main con is, of course, that the silicone material can really attract lint and dust. The pros of silicone do outweigh the cons, though. Silicone has a high material safety rating, is non-porous, scent free, hypoallergenic and latex and phthalates free. For a toy like this, with all its nooks that body fluids can end up in, it makes sense to have it be made of a non-porous material. The finish of the silicone is velvety soft, and to look at the finish has a matte appearance. The shaft of the butterfly is quite firm, and the shape is semi realistic in that it has a realistically shaped head with two small ridges directly under it. While the front side of the head (the side that will rest against the front wall of the vagina in use) is ridged, the back of the shaft is smooth. Along the sides of the shaft are slight ridges that run lengthways on the shaft. Typical of silicone toys, the finish of the Love Rider has a lot of ‘drag’ to it so, despite its modest size, a drop of water based lubricant may be needed for comfortable insertion.

The design of the Love Rider is a fairly classic butterfly vibe design. The base of the toy is shaped like a butterfly, with wings that sit over the vulva and a head with antennae that sits against the clitoris. Half way down the body of the butterfly, a three inch long shaft protrudes from it. The shaft is semi realistic in shape, and the head of the penis feels solid; the lower section of the shaft has some flexibility to it but is firm. The girth of the shaft is just 1 1/4 inches in diameter. There is a visible seam along the shaft, but this can’t be felt during use. From the back of the butterfly’s body, a wire leads to the butterfly’s remote control. The remote is rounded and egg-like in shape, and fits comfortably in the hand. It has two control buttons; the buttons aren’t particularly raised out from the control, which I like as it means they are not as likely to be accidentally pressed during use.

The Love Rider boasts 7 vibrating functions; three of these are levels of steady vibrations, and four are pulsating or escalating modes of vibration. Using the On/Off button to switch on the butterfly, it automatically starts vibrating at the lowest steady vibration level. Pressing the function button will bring you to a higher level of vibration or onto a pulsating or escalating mode. The seven functions are, in order:

While the lowest vibration is a gentle start, I found the higher vibration levels and pulsating functions carried through the shaft and antennae of the butterfly nicely. The head of the dildo part of the toy vibrates particularly strong, and the antennae of the butterfly can be seen twitching and dancing in rhythm with the different pulsing modes. The slight curve and ridged head of the dildo seem to keep it well in place during use, ensuring that even when used hands free it doesn’t slip out. During use I noticed that the vibrations of the toy can be felt anally, which surprised me. At first I thought this must be due to the strong vibration of the shaft's head pressing at a strange angle inside me, but afterwards I realized that the short length of butterfly that is behind the shaft rests against the taint, carrying vibrations to places I wouldn’t have predicted before trying it out. As pleasant as this extra stimulation was, I did still find myself wishing two things: the first being that the shaft of the toy was maybe an inch and a half longer, and the second being that the antennae reached further. Made of silicone, the Love Rider Wild Butterfly is both latex and phthalates free. It is scent free, non-porous, and easily cleaned with warm soapy water or specialized toy cleaner. There are a good few little nooks around the butterfly that you need to pay extra attention to when cleaning. It is generally recommended that silicone based lubricants shouldn’t be used with silicone toys, so I use a water based lube. Ideally the toy's batteries should be removed after use, and the toy should be cleaned and stored somewhere clean to keep it dust and lint free. This can be a real dust magnet even with careful storage, so I find I often need to rinse water over mine before use. I keep mine in a zip sealed bag in between uses.
