In Space, No One Will Hear You Vibrate
The Zone Joy is a fun hands-free vibrator. Its tripod base with rubber bumpers helps keep this in place for easy use on flat, firm surfaces. The strong vibrations travel well up and down the removable shaft, and the patterns are fun and varied. This is a very loud toy, so background sound is essential if you’re not alone.

Pros
Phthalates-free, hypoallergenic, hands free use, off button, good patterns, strong vibrations.
Cons
Noisy, some learning curve for positions, may be too short or thick for some.
When I first saw the Zone Joy from Cal Exotics it reminded me of a spaceship, albeit pink. The look is unusual, and since I’m very much into hands-free stimulation now I was hoping that this would work well for hands-free use.
The Zone Joy comes packaged in a large round plastic container, held in place in plastic inside. The package has information about the toy and its speeds on the outside, and the toy is clearly visible within.
The main part of the Zone Joy is made of super smooth and slick plastic. The base has three legs which radiate out 3 1/2" from the center and form a rough triangle about 6” long on each side when measured tip to tip. Each of the legs has a small 1/4" high rubber bumper on the bottom to help keep the Zone Joy in place when in use. On the bottom of the base is an easy to open battery compartment which holds 3 AA batteries. The direction is clearly labeled.
The plastic nub that rises from the tripod base is 2 1/8” tall. The nub is covered by a smooth, soft TPR sleeve which is a matching pink. The sleeve is 3 1/4" long and about 3/8” thick. It’s not solid, however: there is a layer of air in between the inner and outer shells of the sleeve.
The sleeve has a rounded top that is 1 1/8” long and 1 1/2" wide. It narrows a bit before widening to its full 2” diameter. It is easy to remove and replace on the plastic nub and stays securely in place when in use. It can be inserted 3 1/4".
While I only used this vaginally, it should be safe for anal use since the shaft widens and stays securely attached to the base. Since the sleeve is TPR and not silicone, you should use a condom if sharing this toy or using it anally as it can’t be disinfected. Only water-based lubes should be used.
The base of the Zone Joy is not waterproof, and should never be immersed or run under water. It should be cleaned with a damp cloth. The TPR sleeve is waterproof, and can be washed under running water, using antibacterial soap to clean. Make sure to set this upright to dry, so no water is trapped in the air layer between its shells. Once dry, the sleeve can be reinserted onto the base.
This can be stored in its packaging, or on a cabinet shelf away from other toys.
The Zone Joy has 2 control buttons. These are black left and right arrows, and are surrounded by a silver-colored plastic plate. The left arrow is a dedicated off button, while the right button cycles through 7 functions:
- Foreplay : low steady vibration
- The Heat : medium steady vibration
- Woo Hoo: high steady vibration
- Orgasmic : varied pulse pattern
- Throbbing : even pulse pattern
- Rock & Roll : short long pulse pattern
- Surging : low to high vibration
The Rock & Roll pattern is a novel and interesting pattern, and a fun one to set this on. Once on the Surging function, pressing the arrow again allows you to cycle through the patterns again. When turned off and turned back on again, the Zone Joy always starts in the Foreplay pattern.
The motor seems to be located in the plastic nub that holds the sleeve, and the vibrations travel exceedingly well from the tip of the sleeve to its bottom, no matter which setting the vibrator is on.
The Zone Joy is extremely loud. It sounds a lot like a rocket ship. Well, maybe not quite that loud, but you can hear this through a closed door. The noise is a fair trade-off for its use, though: it is a lot of hands-free fun!

Experience
The look of this toy makes me giggle. It really does look spacey! I love that it has a dedicated off button.
One thing about this vibrator – it is seriously loud! While the rubber bumpers probably do dampen the noise somewhat since the toy’s body doesn’t rest on a surface, they don’t dampen it much. The first night I was filming I turned it on and my husband came in from the other room to see what all the noise was.
The vibrations on this are great. They really travel nicely up and down the entire shaft, and I really like the Rock & Roll pattern, as well as the Woo Hoo high vibration.
I love that this is hands-free – it really does work well for me this way, although it took a bit of practice to find the right thrusting angle. It works better some places than others as well. Hard, flat surfaces like chairs work the best. Probably the easiest position I found was to put this on a chair seat and face backwards on the chair so I could hold onto the chair back.
It worked fine on our Equus as well, which is flat but not as hard, although balancing was a bit more difficult. The bumpers kept it from sliding all over the place. I didn’t find this to work well when it was placed on the floor as the shaft is too short. It would be nice to be able to buy replacement sleeves that fit on the tripod with different lengths and textures!
Overall, this is a lot of fun, and I expect we’ll get a lot of use out of it.

Follow-up commentary

I love hands-free! The Zone Joy is a lot of fun, whether I'm using this alone or with my husband. It's definitely one of the more unusual looking toys I have. The battery life has been decent.
While we usually use this on a chair or the Equus, I've found that it can balance nicely on the Wing as well. I prefer using this vaginally, although I have tried it out anally a few times when I'm sufficiently warmed up. It's too wide for me to use it that way often, but is fun on occasion.
