The Doc Johnson Superstar Vibe is a classic, straight, vibrating dildo. The toy is 7 1/4 inches long, with 6 1/4 of those inches being insertable, and it has a width of just over an inch. Some may think that slightly thin, but the hardness of the material, which is plastic, quite makes up for that. Down the entire insertable length of this toy are eight deep ridges for added stimulation both internally and externally, and the whole things comes to a rounded point for ease of insertion.

Because this toy is both smooth and slim, I would normally recommend it to toying beginners or even virgins. However the hardness of this toy causes me to think that it does require at least a little background in sex toys. Be careful not to thrust too hard with it as it has the potential to bruise your cervix. And the hardness and length lend themselves to tilting the toy against the G-spot.

It can be used for penetration (vaginal only please! There is nothing on here to stop it from going all the way inside if used anally, hence the first title, "A Break from Pegging"); as a vibrator for a woman's clitoris or to stimulate a man's penis, balls, or perineum, or anyone's erogenous zones for that matter; or you could use it to deliver pinpoint vibration to help ease tense muscles during an innocent massage. I imagine the ridges might even make it feel nice when rolled across one's back, too.

The Superstar vibe is made of a hollow, hard plastic casing, which houses two AA-batteries and a vibrating motor. The plastic used is one of the safer toy materials out there, as it can be cleaned thoroughly and is more resistant to bacteria than, say, jelly. Also, it is a food grade material, non-porous, hypo-allergenic, and latex- and phthalate-free. Good news for me, since I'm allergic to latex and require an overall safe material in my toys.

Just beneath the battery cap is an assumedly silicone ring, since it's latex-free, which serves to make the whole toy waterproof. This has been tested by me, several times. Upon removal from its box the toy had absolutely no smell, and after a quick wipedown to rid it of any factory debris, no taste, either. The ridges, though initially slightly intimidating for me, serve their stimulating purpose well. I would not consider this toy to be realistic at all; it's just a thick vibrating stick. But you don't hear me complaining.

This toy is in no way discreet. It's a long, narrow object that, when supplied with batteries and turned on, vibrates. It's clear what it's for. That being said, because the batteries are removable, it is definitely travel-friendly, if you don't mind a look or two from your baggage checker. I know I don't.

I have to say that despite any misgivings I may have had, I do like this toy very much. Being a little thinner than the average penis, and certainly much thinner than my boyfriend's, I wasn't sure it would satisfy me, but the tapered tip helps me feel like it fills me more as it gets thicker during insertion, and the hard, unyielding nature of the plastic keeps it from getting squished as I bear down with my pelvic floor muscles. The two batteries help to make up for any lightness the toy might have had when empty, which is good for those like me who prefer a good, heavy toy. My favorite thing about the Superstar vibe, to my great and utter surprise, is the vibration. More specifically, it's the adjustable vibration (equally, when not in use, I absolutely love the orange color of mine, and all the colors are exceptional). I start with it on low to tease my clit and get me going, then insert it, and as I become more aroused and get closer to orgasm, I ramp it up until it's going full-tilt and sends me over. The control is a turn-dial on the end of the toy, which is easy to figure out and use, at least until things get slippery. I'm not exactly sure where in the toy the motor is located, but I can feel it strongest about an inch down from the tip. That makes sense, since that's about where the last battery rests. It carries well through the entire length of toy, even on low, so no matter where on the toy I press it to my body, it feels almost equally strong.

Speaking of vibrations, boy does this thing vroom! It can get quite strong when turned all the way up, and even on its lowest setting it's more than a hum. Unfortunately the hard plastic doesn't lend itself to soundproofing the thing, so it definitely gives a deep buzz, as well. And after several uses, the two batteries I first put in it are still going strong as the first time. As I mentioned before, the Superstar is waterproof, and it has proven itself time and again through washing after use, and even use in the shower. I don't necessarily recommend submerging it in, say, a tub or bucket, though, because I can't easily see anything inside that will stop water from leaking eventually into the turn-dial and messing things up.

First I'll discuss cleaning, as this is extremely important in all adult toys. Being made of plastic, the Superstar vibe can be disinfected using antibacterial soap and very hot water, or by rubbing it down with isopropyl alcohol. I suggest doing this after every single use to keep your toy in tip-top condition. A dirty toy is an unsafe toy.

This toy is also not made of an unnecessarily sensitive material. Hard plastic toys can be stored side-by-side, touching each other or laying on top of one another, and nothing bad will happen. They can also be used with any type of lubricant, though I can't see why most people would need it with this one. That being said, it's still wise, if you have a wide variety of toy materials in your box or bag or drawer, to keep all of your toys in their own separate pouch or box. This keeps them from becoming contaminated if one of them was not cleaned properly, or from reacting negatively with one another due to contact, and prevents knicks and dings to more fragile materials. Also, remove all batteries from toys when not in use to prevent the batteries from dying, turning the toy on at unexpected or inappropriate times, or from corroding or leaking during times of non-use.

Thus handled, your Superstar Vibe should last for years to come.

The Superstar vibe comes packaged in a thin, clear plastic box. On the outside is a picture of (assumedly) the Vivid Girl the vibrator was named for, hot pink for Monique, fuchsia (which is misspelled on the box) for Sunny, orange for Stefani, and royal blue for Savanna. There are no instructions included, but it does say on the side in several different languages, "7 inch Multi-Speed, waterproof vibrator. ABS Plastic." That's information enough for me on a toy this simple, but only because I am quite learned in the care and maintenance of such materials. There is a window through the front printing that allows most of the toy to be seen, which was great for me because I don't like surprises when it comes to sex toys. Inside the box, there is a strip of clear plastic the same width and similar feel as the box, which has been bent at certain angles and holes cut out to allow the plastic to thread around the dildo, keeping it from bumping around or slipping in the box. It seems to hold it quite well. Until the thin plastic of the box wears out, I will definitely be storing my Superstar in its original packaging. It's even a good shape for giftwrapping, being a box, and would make a great gift for a girl/woman who likes colorful sex toys.

I have to say, after my negative experience with my first Doc Johnson toy, I was extremely skeptical as to the performance of this one. But I figured, eh, why not? It's free. They deserve another chance. And I'm glad I got it. It's fun to use, and to have used on me; the vibrations could be stronger, but that's a plus for me as vibrations usually aren't my thing; and the size, despite being kind of narrow, is made just right by the hardness of the toy. If I had had to pay for it, I would say it was the best twenty dollars I ever spent (then again, I probably wouldn't have spent it on a Doc Johnson toy, but again, glad I gave them a second chance). But I will say I'm really glad to have a toy that's all mine and not have to feel guilty anymore about using toys that were meant to be "ours," without him.
