The basic black of harnesses
This harness is the ideal beginner purchase. It's quite cheap, easy to use, and versatile. While this may not be the be-all and end-all of harnesses, it is certainly a great addition to nearly any arsenal.

Straps get twisted up easily, can sometimes pinch
Ah, who doesn't love strap-on play? I mean, really, what could be better? Harnesses, as I see it, can be divided into two groups: gender expression and sex toys. While there can be (and often is) considerable overlap, it is helpful to look at both uses separately. Also, "Bare as you dare harness" is quite a mouthful, so from here forth I will be referring to it as "Sue".
Gender expression:
While I don't pack myself, my partner does with some regularity. She informs me that Sue is by far the most comfortable harness she's used for this purpose. The straps are quite narrow and not at all bulky. They fit very discretely under most clothes, even fairly well-fitted pants. The o-ring that sits on you butt can show through a bit, but only on tight clothing. The (front) o-ring should fit pretty much any packer, but even if it doesn't the snap-on straps make it easy as pie to slip in a larger o ring. The straps can loosen throughout the day, but they stay comfortably snug for several hours before they need tightening again.
My lovely partner tells me that since Sue is so small you get accustomed to wearing it quite easily, and that there are distinct psychological advantages to this. It makes it easier to feel like the packer is part of your body, rather than something you *wish* were part of your body. There are only two serious drawbacks. First, it can, very occasionally, pinch a bit of hair or skin, eliciting a sharp cry from my poor sweetie. Secondly, the straps do have a tendency to get hopelessly twisted when putting on or removing Sue.
Sexy times:
I would describe this as the ideal beginner harness. This is partly because it's so versatile (fits most moods from kinky to vanilla, fits most dildos and the o ring is interchangeable). It is also very low-maintenance (travel friendly, easy to clean). But, the best aspect of this harness is that the experience of fucking your partner with that much skin contact is just delicious. Bulky harnesses (especially the ones that look and feel like underwear made from nylon straps and stiff leather) can jar you right out of the experience and make fucking all mechanics and no lust. Sue doesn't do this. Sue is an old romantic. With Sue you can brace your thighs just outside you lovers, and feel her muscles tremble. You can feel her lower belly expand with her breath and sputter out. It's almost transcendental.
This really is a wonderfully low-maintenance toy. The straps are nylon, and easily cleaned. Just wash it with soapy water and rinse it thoroughly with water. The o rings and snaps are both metal, and can be subjected to very nearly anything. You can store Sue pretty much anywhere, since it takes up so little room. I would be a little careful not to store it with other harnesses or other strappy things. If you do that, it may get tangled up a bit, and take a few minutes to get untangled. I store mine in a small bag in and then toss it in my bag with all my other toys. This works perfectly for me.
It's also worth noting that good ol' Sue is vegan and fits up to 54" hips. As a fat vegan kinkster, it's a blessing to find something that is neither leather nor too small. The wide range in sizing also means that partners could easily share it (it can be adjusted down to very nearly nothing). With so many things in its favor, and so few against, why not give Sue a chance?

Follow-up commentary

This is very much a staple in my collection. It's just so versatile! I think one of the best things about this harness is the easily changed O-rings. As my partner and I prefer very different girths in dildos, no other harness can fit all our strap on dildos. But with Sue you can just pop in a new O-ring. It's also incredibly sturdy. Yay Nylon!
