Wheel...of...Torture! (well, not really!)

This Wartenburg Wheel is a great choice if you're new to BDSM or are looking for something new to add to sensory play. It's lightweight, easy to use, and easy to care for. Not only that, it's a very inexpensive way to try something new! It does squeak some and isn't the highest quality, but it is worth the small expense.

Use

Wartenberg Wheels weren't used in the bedroom in the earlier part of the 1900's. In fact, you probably wouldn't have wanted one near you back then. These wheels were invented by Robert Wartenberg and were used as a medical device that would test your nerve reactions. Sound sexy? Eh, not so much! Today, these wheels have been taken out of the doctor's office, and put into the comfort of our own bedrooms as a great sensory toy!

Fetish Fantasy Series wartenberg wheel is a very non-intimidating introduction into the world of pinwheels. Whether you're new to BDSM, new to pinwheels, or just interested in finding a new sensory toy, this makes a great addition. If know you enjoy pain and have done a lot of that type of play before, you won't find this tool to be anything to write home about. I would look at other options featured here on Eden Fantasys.

This tool is extremely simple to use. While holding onto the handle, you press the dull spikes onto any part of the skin and push forward or backward, leaving a very interesting feeling along with it. You have total control over how hard or softly you press the tool.

There's not a whole lot of excitement that comes from using this toy on yourself. It works best with a partner with the wheel either being used on you, or by you on someone else's body.

Can be used as it is or incorporate temperature play into the mix as well. Put the Stainless Steel end into a cup of ice water or hot water for a even greater sensory experience!

Design / Craftsmanship / Material / Size / Fit

This tool was designed to very comfortably fit in the palm of your hand with your finger resting on the top of the oval cup. The hollow handle is larger at the end, and tapers slightly as you get closer to the business end of this tool. At the end of the hard plastic handle, it changes into a medical grade stainless steel, oval cup. At the end of the cup is the pinwheel. The pinwheel is attached to the rest of the unit by a small rivet. This makes it so that the toy can roll with ease.

This tool doesn't have pins that are actually going to pierce your skin or cause you pain. The "spikes" are dull and you would need a great deal of force to puncture the skin. Not a good idea! The feeling this tool gives is more of a firm tingle than anything. You can press quite firmly before it becomes a little uncomfortable, and it will only leave small, dotted impressions on your skin that last less than a minute.

The Wartenberg wheel is very lightweight and I'm rather impressed with how well it's made considering how inexpensive the toy is. I can't bend the metal with my hands, and though it's hollow, the plastic feels very strong. I don't see this toy breaking easily.

The materials are both very safe, the plastic rates an 8/10 and the stainless steel rates a 10/10 on the Eden material safety scale. The part that counts can't get any safer!

The look of this tool is very similar to that of a pastry cutter or a crafting tool, so if it's left out, I don't believe anyone would expect that you were using it in a kinky way. It's very discreet in that sense, and is something I can really appreciate about this piece.

Performance

This tool wasn't as impressive as I had hoped it would be as far as performance. The wheel has a squeak to it when it's rolling and often will just stop even though you're still pushing it forward. It's a little annoying, but tolerable.

As far as the sensory side of the tool, I'm pleased. We didn't have anything in our toy box that felt the way this toy does, which was a big plus for me. The ability to control how hard you press really changes the feel of the toy and I really like that.

It's comfortable to hold, easy to use, and I can tell will hold up well over time.
    • Comfortable during use
    • Easy to put on / use
    • Holds up to use well

Care and Maintenance

Cleaning your pinwheel is pretty easy. You can use soap and water or your favorite toy cleaner. Make sure you turn the wheel as you're washing and rinsing to make sure the entire piece has been cleaned well. After you've washed it, try to find a way to stand the toy upright so that all the water will drain from the handle.

If necessary, the stainless steel part of this toy can be sterilized. I would recommend using a 10% bleach solution, as boiling just the steel part would be rather tricky.

Both the plastic and stainless steel can be exposed to silicone, oil, and water based lubricants, so there's no need to worry about your tool becoming ruined on accident.

This toy can be stored in it's original package, or just tossed into your toy box, nightstand, etc. I would use caution when leaving it around or against certain toys. I don't believe it would puncture the toy, but it might leave permanent impression.

Packaging

The Wartenberg Wheel arrives to me in a thin white cardboard box that looks like it was made to go on a peg hook. The box has a full color image on the toy on the front and some information about it on the back. If anyone reads the back of the box, they'll know exactly what this toy is for since it's pretty well spelled out for you.

The toy is inside of a plastic bag when you first take it out of the package and can be disposed of.

Personal comments

Along with your pinwheel, you receive a free vinyl eye mask to help heighten your senses even further. It's packaged in the same box as the pinwheel and has a little plastic bag around it. It's very simply made and has an elastic band to help keep it in place. The band stretches very far and is a one size fits all piece. The material is very thin and is much more of a beginner mask than anything. It's a little on the scratchy side and doesn't keep out all light. But hey, what do you want for free?

Follow-up commentary
This toy is okay. It's nice for light sensory play, but we found that it became a little boring and doesn't get used much any more. The toy has held up over time, so that's a plus, it's just not as fun as it was in the beginning.

And the squeak is still very annoying and kind of takes the element of surprise out of the experience.

Amazing review, thank you for sharing. The picture of it on your finger, yikes. I'm a wimp when it comes to things like that even if you do have to press down on it to make those impressions.
