Leather-like and Fraying Included
The Black Rose Whipping Willow by Doc Johnson is an attractive, inexpensive whip. It's important to note that the whip is actually a "leather-like" material, which basically means it's not leather. My partner and I were okay with that, but the imbalance of weight (handle vs. tails) was a bit awkward for us. Also, the handle had quite a bit of fraying already when it arrived. It's a nice whip, but it's not perfect.

Pros
Pretty, inexpensive, provides tickling-decent sting sensations, easy to care for.
Cons
Imbalance of weight, material composition differences, fraying to handle.
The Black Rose Whipping Willow by Doc Johnson arrived in an attractive looking, rectangular, cardboard box. The front of the packaging has a photo of a model with the whip and states the product name. The back of the packaging has a brief product description and states the company name. You could use the box for storage or recycle it.
Inside of the box, the whip is folded up inside of a plastic bag. There is tissue paper surrounding the handle. The product page states that the whip is made of leather and silk (which it’s not). Even the packaging states that the whip is leather (which it’s not).
I had previously purchased the Black Rose Forbidden Flower Mouth Bit and when I was working on the review, I researched the product materials. The Black Rose collection by Doc Johnson seems to state they are a certain material but their website lists the material composition as faux.
The whip is not real leather; it’s listed on their website as a “leather-like material”. So it’s not leather. They also list on the website that there is a “silky fabric”. I’ll be honest, I can tell that it’s a “leather-like” material but I can’t find any part of the whip that seems like a silky fabric. There really isn’t anything silky about it… I personally don’t care that the whip is not real leather and has no silkyness to it but I thought I’d let those of you who may care know.
I’ve taken a few measurements of the item but if you need any additional measurements, let me know and I’ll get them for you.
Length of handle: 7 inches
Circumference of handle: 3 3/8 inches
Length of tails: 16 ¼ inches
Width of tails: just over 1/8 of an inch each
Length of wrist strap: just less than 6 ½ inches
Width of wrist strap: ½ of an inch
The handle to the whip is a purple colour while the rest of the whip is black. There are 26 tails to the whip, though I am not sure if this is the case for every whip. Mine has 26 though. There is a pretty black rose at the very bottom of the handle. The rose is 1 inch in length with a diameter of just over an inch. There really is no purpose or function of the rose, but it does look pretty. There is also a wrist strap at the base of the handle. The wrist strap is not adjustable.
The weight of the entire whip is quite light. The tails are actually heavier than the handle and strap. This may be an issue for those who prefer a heavier handle to their whips. My partner and I don’t really have a preference yet since we are still fairly new to using these types of toys. I think the light weight of the whip is actually good for beginners. The appearance of the whip is also very beginner friendly; it has a non-intimidating appearance.
The wrist strap, rose, and tails are done nicely. The small quality issue with the whip was with the handle. The top 2 ½ inches of the handle has fraying to it. This is how it arrived. The fraying doesn’t affect the performance of the whip, but it does make the handle look used. I’m actually surprised that the handle would look like this because it was wrapped in tissue paper, which I assumed was to protect the handle.
So when my partner and I had used the whip, we had to get the hang of it first. The other whips we own have much shorter tails to them. It seemed a bit awkward to whip and I’m not sure if this is because we are just not used to the long tails or if the imbalance in weight had anything to do with it. We got used to the awkwardness of using the whip but at first it was sort of funny.

Experience
...continued
The whip can provide sensations from tickling to a decent sting. My pain tolerance level is fairly low so when my partner flung the whip, it hurt. It left red marks on me. My partner really liked when I flung the whip. He said that it wasn’t painful to the point he couldn’t tolerate it. Me, I prefer the lighter swings.
Since I am unsure of the exact material of the whip, I figured that the faux-leather care instructions would be sufficient. To clean the whip, just wipe the whip and tails down with a damp washcloth. You can use a mild detergent/soap on the material. After we were done using it, we just wiped it down with a damp washcloth without any soap. We didn’t really get it dirty so I didn’t need to use soap to the product yet.
Overall, it’s a pretty whip but I’ve deducted two stars for a combination of reasons. Firstly, the whip is not leather. Like I had said, this doesn’t bother me. It’s only a small portion of the rating deduction. Secondly, the fraying to the handle making the toy look used, even though it’s brand new. Thirdly, the imbalance of weight to the whip makes it a bit awkward to use.
