I Can See You!

The Spellbound eye mask is a simple and elegant eye mask by Coquette. It has a thin layer of foam that make it feel soft and comfortable. There is one large problem, however: this mask is not completely effective for people who have noses which aren't tiny. Before purchasing, check the measurements of the mask against your face to make sure this will work for you.

Use

The Spellbound eye mask can be used by anyone for sensory deprivation during light play or to keep light out of your eyes while sleeping. This mask has two elastic bands that help the mask stay in place very well. It shouldn't slip off of your head unless you're moving around pretty vigorously, so don't be afraid to let loose! However, if you need a mask for rougher play, you may be better off investing in something sturdier.

Spellbound Mask - front

The design looks neither too masculine nor too feminine, so anybody can feel comfortable using it, though it is also important to note that this is part of Coquette's Spellbound Collection. If you want to complete your Spellbound ensemble, you'll need the matching corset, garters, and ribbon belt/restraint.

This is great for beginners or more advanced users. The straps are elastic so there is no need for tricky adjustments. This mask is extremely simple to use. To put it on, position the mask so that the black size is near your face and the inward curve is on the bottom, then place the mask over your eyes, pull the straps over your head, and position them comfortably.

Design / Craftsmanship / Material / Size / Fit

Simplicity is the name of the game with this eye mask. It's the same basic shape as other common eye masks, with curves around the edges and an inward curve near the nose. The front of the mask is made of smooth, silver satin and the back feels like soft cotton, although it is also synthetic. The black fabric around the edges is also satin. Inside is soft, thin padding that is equally distributed throughout the mask. It feels foamy and comfortable. As you can see, the mask is very thin.

Spellbound Mask - top view

The mask has two elastic straps to hold the mask in place. One strap is closer to the top of the mask; the other is closer to the bottom. You can position these freely on your head to minimize movement and pressure on your face. After weeks of use, I didn't notice significant stretching of these straps.

There are three tags (brand name, size, and material information) on the back of the mask near the left eye that some may find to be bothersome. If you don't like these, you can simply cut them off. I didn't even notice the tags once the mask was on, so this won't be an issue for everyone.

Spellbound Mask - back

The softness of this mask feels great. What won't feel so great for everyone is the fit. This is one size fits all. As I mentioned, the straps didn't stretch very much. The circumference of my head is about 22 inches and this mask was bordering on being too tight. Measure your head around where the mask would go before you order this. If your circumference is greater than 22 inches, I would recommend that you opt for a mask with adjustable straps if comfort is a priority.

My major fit problem is that the inward curve allows for very little nose space. If you have a larger than average nose or there's a bump on the bridge of your nose, this mask might place unpleasant pressure on your nose. This is a problem with most eye masks of this shape. If other masks of this shape have worked for you, this one probably will, too.

Measurements (with trim included):
Width: 6.75"
Max. Height (over eyes): 3.25"
Min. Height (over nose): 3"
Strap Circumference, Unstretched: 16.5"
Strap Circumference, Completely Stretched: 27"

As far as craftsmanship goes, this mask is just okay. The straps won't snap on a whim, but they also won't handle a large amount of tension. There are some stray threads hanging out of the back of the mask. The mask feels a bit flimsy. It's not disposable, but it won't last forever.

Performance

The mask blocked light from the top and sides, but because the bridge of my nose comes well off of my face, I could still see everything below my nose. Standing, I could see multiple feet in front of myself. I had a friend with a much flatter nose try it on. She still had some vision, but it was a lot less than what I experienced. Based on this incredibly scientific survey, I hypothesize that very few people will have their vision completely obscured.

While I have problems with the shape of the mask, the size of the mask itself (not including the straps) is adequate. It wasn't so large that is was covering my forehead and cheeks, and it wasn't so small that it only covered my eyeballs.

This is a fine product to use for short periods of time. I forced myself to sleep in it for about a week and concluded that long periods of wear lead to headaches from the pressure.

Care and Maintenance

The packaging is great for storage. The mask can be put in the thin envelope and slipped into a drawer. It can also fit easily in a small bag if you need to travel with it.

If you want to avoid having to wash this mask frequently, avoid using this mask while wearing makeup or other skin products, or while you are sick.

Spellbound Mask - info tag

As you can see, this mask is 50% Acetate, 50% Nylon. Satin will not hold up in hot temperatures, so don't put this in the washing machine or boil it. It is also not safe to bleach it. Instead, wash the mask in cool water and lay it flat to dry. The fabric is very thin and delicate, so do not squeeze or wring it dry.

Packaging

The packaging of the mask is sleek and simple. It is a heavy paper envelope that is approximately 8.25 inches long and 4.25 inches tall.

Spellbound Packaging - Front

On the front of the envelope is a model wearing the mask. The model is posed seductively, but there are no nude or overtly sexual images on the package.

Spellbound Packaging - Back

The back contains a zoomed-out version of the image on the front. You can see the model's lingerie, but there is still no nudity. Though it's not pornographic, this may not be packaging that you want to leave laying around for anybody to see. This image shows off other items in the Spellbound Collection so that you can see the complete look.

Spellbound Packaging - Back Info

Text on the back of the package explains the contents in English and French:

Spellbound Eye Mask
1 PC. Satin eye mask with double strap detail.
O/S Silver/Black

50% Acetate 50% Nylon

Spellbound Packaging - Tab

The envelope can be easily opened using the tab on the end flap. The mask slips easily out of the end.

There is no indication of whether or not the packaging is recyclable, but it appears as if it is because it is made of paper.

Experience

I frequently sleep in masks to block out light, and I have a lot of problems finding masks that work on my face. If I buy a traditional eye mask, I usually have to cut a slit where the mask presses on the bridge of my nose, then sew a small piece of fabric over the slit to block out light while still leaving a little more space for my nose. Even with that small alteration (which ruins the appearance of the mask because I'm not good at sewing) the mask still pulls enough to put some pressure on my eyes, which temporarily blurs my vision after I wake up. By no means do I have a button nose, but it's also not huge. I also don't have an abnormally large head. This mask seems way too tiny to be comfortable.

In summary, this mask needs larger/stretchier straps, sturdier fabric and construction, and more nose room. The quality is decent for the price, but I don't want to pay for something that I don't want to use.
