Big Heart-On for Small Spades

In the end, Doc Johnson's small Sexy Spades is a good way to try out a glass piece without spending a lot of money, and makes for a good "starter" plug: whether you're just starting out with anal play and don't want to jump in with an overly big toy, or if you like to start out with a relatively smaller toy to open up your ass to take a larger one later on. Frankly, it feels good going in, and feels great keeping it in.

Use

The Sexy Spades is a glass butt plug manufactured by Doc Johnson. Since this purchase was my first foray into glass, and since my recent anal toy selections have gravitated toward larger toys (Tantus Severin Medium, O2 Max), I decided to go with the smallest of the three plugs in the Sexy Spades collection. As most of my anal toy experience is with prostate stimulators or with slender toys that are suitable for shallow thrusting, I thought the Sexy Spades plug would be a good choice for a toy that would not only ease me open more than I'm used to, but would be a smart option for a butt plug I could leave in for awhile, allowing me to grow accustomed to having something in there for extended periods. Since I didn't want anything too large or too long, I liked the size and design of this glass plug.

Material / Texture

Doc Johnson has manufactured this plug out of solid tempered glass. This material sits at the top of EdenFantasys safety scale, and makes the toy non-porous, which is great for clean up and for overall safety and hygiene. As it's made of glass, there is no smell or taste whatsoever. Just good pure fun.

The Sexy Spades is completely smooth, with no added texture. I've seen some glass toys with added ridges or raised bumps, which might make them easier to grip (internally) during use, so you may want to bear that in mind if you think a solid, sleek toy might be too smooth once it's lubed up. I noticed a slight problem with the toy staying in place while wearing it "up and around," but I was using a bunch of lube, which probably doesn't help a non-textured glass toy stay put.

Design / Shape / Size

The design of the Sexy Spades reminds me of a small trailer hitch. There is a flat, round base (a must with anal toys, especially short ones) from which extends a fairly thick stem, about an inch high. Atop this neck rests the business end of the plug. Unlike an actual trailer hitch, the bulb isn't perfectly round, but more the shape and size of a large strawberry; the bottom aspect of the bulb is wide (the widest portion of the plug) and tapers upward into a rounded point. Viewed from the side, you can see how the spade-shape of the plug inspired its name.

Some product dimensions: total length is 3.25" with 2.75" fully insertable. This isn't a long toy, but even in the small version, the widest part of the bulb (4.75" circumference; 1.5" diameter) is still pretty significant, something to bear in mind if you are new to anal play, or if you prefer more slender toys in general. The neck of the toy reduces to seven-eights of an inch, but it's still thick enough to keep you open while you're holding the toy inside you.

Doc Johnson added just enough color to give dimension to the clear glass. Whorls of amber and royal blue swirl inside the bulb, but this is totally internal coloring. I've seen reviews for other glass toys where swirls of color have been painted on the outside of the toy, so I was glad to realize the colors used in this toy are completely internal, and pose no risk for rubbing off during use. The chosen colors compliment each other perfectly and give just the right amount of definition to the toy.

Because of its small size and fairly discreet appearance, the Sexy Spades would be perfect for travel. Please note that there is no suction cup with this plug and even though the base is flat, I'm not sure how sturdy the glass would be on certain surfaces, so use care if you're going to position your plug and sit on it. I'm not sure glass or a plug are the best choices for harness use, and honestly I never think about those aspects since I don't engage in harness play. I wouldn't recommend this toy for that at any rate, if you're wondering about good toys for harness use.

Performance

Initially, I thought the "small" designation was a little deceptive and I had reasoned the super-smooth texture of the toy would mean it would slide right in. As it turned out, I needed to add way more lube, because the wide portion of the bulb caused some discomfort during insertion. After increasing the lube, the Sexy Spades popped right in. The only other comment I can make on the size is that I wished the neck portion of the toy had been a little longer. The shortness of the plug made reaching my prostate an improbability, but since I purchased the toy for anal warm-up, "hole stretching" and extended wear, I can't really fault the toy for not doubling as a P-spot massager. The medium and larger versions might accomplish this as they are longer, but they also sport wider bulbs, which I don't think I am ready to tackle in such a solid toy.

As for the tempered glass material, it's completely solid and has no give if you squeeze it during use. A plug made of silicone would offer at least some give, and offer a more realistic sensation, but using a solid toy can be a fun change. Personally, I think I prefer the weight of stainless steel if I am desiring a firm toy, but the glass performed nicely. It did not hold heat as long as steel would, but I was able to warm it suitably before insertion.

Even though this was the small version of Sexy Spades, I found it was fairly easy to keep the plug in place as I was up and about, or seated. It did ease itself out a few times, but popped right back in with a little coaxing from me (i.e. I pushed it back in). Since I wasn't sure how the smooth glass would react once it was covered in lubricant, I wore a pair of underpants as a safety net during this "test flight," lest the plug pop out and hit the floor or wall. I enjoyed the way it felt to have this solid glass plug inside me and found no discomfort during extended use. In fact, it felt great to have the Sexy Spades offering a constant reminder that I had something inside me.

Care and Maintenance

Taking care of your Sexy Spades couldn't be easier. Since it's made of glass, you can simply wash it off with hot water and soap. It's completely non-porous, so after a quick cleaning it looks (and smells) brand new. The only thing you need to make sure of is that you have a good grip on it, because a soapy glass toy might easily drop. These glass toys are pretty durable, but why take any chances?

Another great benefit to glass is that you can use any lubricant on them. I tried mine out with a water-based lube, but I can't wait to try it again with a silicone-based lube, which tends to last a lot longer. One thing I had in the back of my head after seeing it mentioned in another review, is to avoid using silicone lube if you're using this toy as a "warm up" for a bigger toy that might not be compatible with the silicone lube that will be left behind inside your anal cavity.

Packaging

The Sexy Spades comes packaged in a see-through plastic box, printed with basic product features. The toy itself is cradled in a molded plastic insert that holds the toy tightly in place. While I wouldn't use the outer box for storage (I hate those things; the tabs are sharp and always snap off), the inner tray would be good for holding the plug when not in use. But if you wanted a storage option that would take up much less room, you could just slip the Sexy Spades into a small cloth pouch to keep it clean and free from damage.
