Gia Falling

The story of Gia is one of ups and downs, raise and falls. From one of the most sought after stars of her age to being confined in a jail cell. This film has a good story that is made better by even better actors and actresses. The film has sort of an artsy quality within it that adds a certain dramatic flare. However, some may find the drug use and the fall from grace of a human being a little bit unsettling.

Covers & Presentation
The front cover resembles a lot of non-adult motion picture film covers. There is a picture of Sunny Leon from the chest up, no nudity is shown, Sunny’s hair covers her chest. The picture is black and white. The lettering is mostly white and surprisingly does not disappear into the picture. The words “Gia” are in gold giving this a really nice touch. The whole cover is bordered by a red background.

The back cover deviates from the class and sophistication of the front and is more indicative of porn film. On the back is a large picture of Sunny Leon spread eagle and spreading her vagina for the camera. In the background there are several pictures of sex from the film. The color scheme consists of warm colors

Film overview- Spoiler Free Summary
Gia follows the raise and the fall of one of the most sought after porn stars of all time, Gia (Hence the title). The story goes from story segments (reenactments of sorts) to interviews with of from legends in the industry that was there at the time (of course this is all fiction). Gia is a reimagining of the 1998 biographical HBO Original film about the life of model Gia Marie Carangi (A film that starred Angelina Jolie, on of her kicking off points in acting).

Gia starts out as a waitress in a strip club and decides that she would like to make a career move into modeling. The career move ultimately leads her to the high of being one of the most sought after star. Shortly after her career starts as a model, Gia is introduced into the porn industry, her first scene being a Girl/Girl scene. Soon after getting involved in the industry Gia soon starts to abuse drugs, leading her down a path of destruction that ultimately leads to her premature demise.

Camera/Picture Quality & Sound:
There are several film effects and filters used in this film, for the most part they are used expertly and give the film a sort of artsy quality. During the sex scenes the picture quality is immaculate. The camera angles are also very good.

In some scenes, for example the opening scene, there are some background noises that do get in the way of the dialogue. I think the director was trying to go for a more realistic type approach, and it worked, perhaps to well.

Bonus Features:
This film is jam pack with bonus features, they include:
Behind the scenes
Outtakes
Deleted Scenes
Photo Gallery

Personal Comments:
The age when it was acceptable to have ads before for a film is dead, and should be buried. This film somehow is stuck in the 90s when it comes to this concept. Thank goodness there was no lock that did not allow you to skip ahead, but in this day and age the trailers should be an add-on not a must view.

Sunny Leon did a really good job with her dialogue. When she needed to be happy she made it look believable as with the times the character needed to be sad and all the emotions in between. For the most part all of the actors were really good, which really supports Dale Dabone’s theory of this being the A-Team of porn stars (or at least part of it).

Tori Black was another actress/performer that did well in all facets of her role. Tori did an excellent job showing passion not only in her acting but in the performing of her sex scenes. There is a part in the film where Tori’s character (ironically named Tori) becomes jealous of those who are in a sex scene with Sunny. Tori really does an excellent job in this scene, she really does an excellent job portraying jealousy without being over the top.

The film’s story is not going to be for everyone, which can be said for just about any movie. There are some themes that are pretty gritty, for example drug use and the downward spiral of not only ones professional life but their personal life. Sunny did an excellent job pacing the destruction of Gia. It was over the course of a decent amount of time before Gia really began to decay, which is much harder to show than to have her become dysfunctional by her first scene, or her first modeling experience.

I really liked Dale Dabone’s segment in the behind the scenes feature. Dale shared some of his experiences working on sets of regular non-adult films, as well as his experiences on adult films, and explained that some of the most bizarre stuff occurred on the non-adult films.

I am giving this a four star rating. Great acting and a decent storyline, you can not have one without the other.
