What are your thoughts on having to use condoms with certain toy materials (jelly, rubber, TPRs)?

Contributor: Envy Envy
I just avoid the toys that need condoms altogether. I prefer something more body safe, really.

I typically only keep a toy as long as it is useful to me. but, I try to only get toys that can be thoroughly cleaned, as I like to use them for both anal play, as well as vaginal play. so if it is porous, it is out of the question, unless it is really special. When I want to use the toy, I don't want to waste anytime fooling around with condoms or covers.

I generally use condoms with my toys anyway just to make cleanup easier. However, I do aim for toys made out of a safer material. It takes a while to save up that much, though. ^^;;

If you don't need to spend $1 on a condom each time you use the toy the savings add up pretty fast. I still have my first sex toy (silicone), and it's going strong 8 years+ later.

I really prefer glass and especially metal. I have a few silicone toys, but I have found that they can retain odors after long-term anal wear. Sometimes even a condom won't stop odors. So, I usually use a textured silicone sleeve with a condom over that. But 95% of the time I just use glass or metal so I don't have to worry about anything.

I hate using condoms on toys but I do. I get paranoid about the chemicals but that doesn't always convince me. My Adam's Pleasureskin actually began to burn me so we use it only with a condom but it cannot be wrinkled at all or its uncomfortable. Im thinking of replacing that one because I do hate having to use condoms.

I avoid toys that I would need to use condoms with. I strongly dislike the smell and taste of condoms. Plus, the toys that do require condom use are generally lower-quality (usually jelly toys), and I would rather not go through the trouble of caring for a toy that is porous and will likely get dirty anyway.

I love jelly, so for me it's completely worth it.

When I first started using toys, I was not that knowledgeable about what was safe and what wasn't. I was 18 when I bought my first one from an adult video store. Had no prior knowledge about material safety, so I never used a condom on them and still don't. I have never had an infection, thankfully. But, I understand why someone would want to take the precaution. I am the only one that uses my insertable toys and wash them before and after each use, regardless of material, so I am not fearful of an infection. I have however made a conscious decision to purchase more silicone and glass toys in the future, but that doesn't mean I am going to give up on all other toys completely, as I do like the realistic dildos. I will just purchase less of them.

I never share my toys and I've never had a problem with non-silicone toys, so I don't use condoms.

I didn't use to mind, thinking that was just the way it was with toys if you wanted to be safe, but after learning about silicone and other safe materials, I make sure to only buy those types. Condoms for toys is just a waste of money!

Yep, it's bad enough I can't take birth control and hate having to put a condom my the REAL dick that goes in me... I refuse to use condoms on a toy, or even buy one that should need it.

I have never used a condom on my toys. I have never had a reaction either and all my toys are plastic and non-porous or silicone. I had a jellied one once and I threw it out after one use.

Using a condom on toys seems wasteful. My fiancee and I only buy non-porous toys.

I almost exclusively purchase non porous toys. I do have some TPR, or plastic, but I don't share with a partner so I'm not worried about using a condom on those. I don't understand the point of getting a toy that requires a condom.

I used to use condoms on all my toys, but now I only use them for anal. I'm one of the lucky few who hardly ever gets an infection of any kind. (Probably just jinxed myself by saying that, LOL) But if I really liked the toy, and it needed a condom, I'd have no problem doing it.

I'd always use a condom on a toy for anal if the toy is used for non-anal as well. It can be made of silicone, but I want to protect the toy and I don't trust anything that's been in the anal zone. Word of advice: you might want to buy the condoms in large quantities and the cheapest ones since you only need protection, no thinness or any extra features. Your toy does not feel anything Only thing to watch out for is that if the condom smells badly it can make your toy smell bad as well. But still better than smells of anal.

I only buy toys that are safe to use without a condom.

However, I put a condom on anything that goes in my butt. It makes clean up much faster. I live with my folks, so I can't really go waltzing down the hall with a butt plug any time I want. I either carry my toys to the bathroom in a towel or wait until everyone is out of the house to clean my toys.

I really hate having to use a condom and as a rule usually only purchase something that I feel confident about. Though, I have made exceptions and I do purchase condoms for those. Though, I also don't use them as often. The idea of going to my family (and religious) doctor because of an infection, and explaining how it got there, is horrifying to me.
