This might be a stupid question, but if I pack my toys in my suitcase which will become a checked bag at the airport, can I be reasonably sure that they won't be bothered?

Quite the opposite. If your bag gets selected for a thorough search for any reason — broken handle, squeaky wheel, random misfortune — they will go through EVERYTHING. Most are just x-ray'ed, but they also do hand searches. There is really no way to be reasonably sure that your toys won't be disturbed.

This woman found a note on her vibrator:
The 'hilarious' TSA note about a woman's vibrator
Picture of the note here.

The last time that I traveled by air my bag was opened and searched as well. No foolish comments on the TSA's paper notification that they left in my bag that my bag had been searched though.

You could ship them to yourself at your destination, or use it as an excuse to buy something new to ship to your destination, or choose a toy that's extremely discreet and try not to fret about it. But you can't prevent TSA from pawing your personal items in the name of fighting terrorism.

Yea theres no garuntee they wont search but you could always put them in your carry on the be sure they won't get broken with rough luggage handeling or stolen

I'm sure that nearly any toy in a carry on would be confiscated. On one occasion I was offered the option of returning to the ticket counter to check the bag or allow the item(s) to be discarded for destruction.

The ridiculousness of many of the prohibitions is astounding.

It largely depends on the size and whether or not it is motorized. Most TSA agents will not ask you to check or destroy a small bullet or something soft like the Tentacle.

However, a G4 Big Boss would probably get you flagged , I wouldn't try to pack that in a carry-on.

The high quality "keeper" toys, the ones that I would not want to throw away or buy a new duplicate at my destination city are likely what would be in my luggage. So I submit to checking my bag and allowing TSA to ogle my possessions.

I work in the airport, and they do random checks of luggage. I would say about 25% of the time I check my bag. It should be safe from someone "messing" with it!
