Couple just starting w/ toys: What do you consider the "basics" for the toy box?

Contributor: Hot 'N Sexy TexasMama Hot 'N Sexy TexasMama
We're just starting to use toys after 32 years of marriage. So far we have the Butterfly Kiss....and have three other vibrators on order.

What would you recommend as the "basics" for a new couple? What material? (Is glass really worth the price??)

If we were going to make a list of the top 10-12 items to have....what should be on the list?

Thanks!

There are quite a few glass pieces that are quite inexpensive I'm not sure if they still have the sale going on, but there were glass pieces for under $10 (regular price $30).

I'd say a staple is lubricants. As for toys, I guess that all really depends on your preferences.

Silicone is my material of choice. I think every toy box should have 3 or 4 body-safe dildos all vary in size, a Hitachi Magic Wand, a good clit vibe like Mimi,a few prostate toys (if that's how you roll), a couple of masturbator sleeves, as well as a Flip Hole Black, a Liberator Throe and (at the very least) the Liberator Wedge - we prefer the Combo Ramp/Wedge .

I love LELO's Mona (I recommend that to everyone; even bought one for my 62 year old mother and it is her favorite), we are currently having a love affair with Vamp SoftSkin Silicone dildos (which Eden, unfortunately does not sell).

We had to buy a toy chest after being married 17 years and discovering Eden. Loving every second of it. If you need more assistance feel free to ask!

I can't believe I'm writing this - but here goes..

Consider this as if your mom or grandmom were coming to you and saying, "Well uh....we've just learned about sex toys...we've always used the missionary position (mostly) but we want to have more fun - especially now that the kids are mostly gone..." - what would you say to them?

I do know that we don't care for anything anal - or at least we're not at that point at this time to try something like that.

Next month hubby gets an $8 per hour raise and so we'll have more money and we'd like to put aside $50 or so per payday (every two weeks) until maybe Christmas or a bit later to get ourselves some things.

The thing is....well - we don't know a lot about them. (It took my adult daughter explaining to me that a dildo is like a vibrator but doesn't vibrate - that's how behind the times I am).

I do understand that there are different types of materials that things are made out of and it seems like a lot of folks don't like the jelly-type ones (forget the names).

Anyway - basically - if your mom or grandmom said, "Hey...I know hubby and I are both 250 pounds...but we want to bring some spice into our life and we have no idea what to get..." - what would you say?

Now I'm blushing...

Please don't laugh - and I appreciate what you're sharing...

A masturbator sleeve - does hubby wear it while we're together - or use it when he's alone?

Prostate toys? Is that like the beads for the butt or something? (I hope I'm saying it right).

Remember - I'm a total newbie at this...

Also, for those just starting out, glass and steel toys can be unforgiving. They are hard and have to be used gently until you get the hang of them. Personally, I do not care for glass at all; we prefer nJoy Stainless Steel. If you want a great stainless piece, get the Pure Wand! It is fabulous for G-spot, as well as Prostate play and can be sterilized and is made of 100% body-safe material.

A sleeve is something you can use on your man, instead of just your hand to jack him off or he can use it solo. We do not use our toys solo. They are for couple time, so everything we use we use together. Prostate toys are those which stimulate the prostate (yes, it is in the butt). We do not care for beads, both of us prefer a probe for butt play; the the Pure Wand, or a silicone dildo.

No worries. We all have to start somewhere. You learn by asking questions. We are all open here and will help out where we can.

A decent sleeve is the Maven, but honestly, the link that is being offered right now is pretty decent. I turned it inside out and my husband really enjoyed it. Not a bad free gift.

I would say take what you already do and incorporate toys into it, rather than jumping into completely unfamiliar territory. For example, if he doesn't mind vibration on his penis (I only say that because my bf can't handle it, it makes him go numb), he could try a vibrating cock ring, which will stimulate both of you during sex, you can keep doing missionary or whatever. Also, if either of you use your hand to stimulate your clitoris during sex, you could slip on a finger vibe. I consider both finger vibes and vibrating cock rings to be excellent beginner toys because they can be used the same way you already have sex. If you are both a little on the larger side, I agree with Redboxbaby that some liberator products may help. I've never used position aids personally so I have no expertise, but I have heard and read that being larger can make certain positions more difficult and wedges and ramps and slings (oh my!) can make things a little easier. I hope I was at least a little bit helpful!!

Other than the fact that I have no idea what wedges and ramps and slings are...you were VERY helpful!

Thanks so much.

When I say "larger" - I don't mean we're like 400 pounds each...but we're both around 250 pounds.

And I feel so funny writing about this here - but I want to learn.

Um...something he mentioned earlier today is that he's mostly numb a lot....

I mean - he doesn't have any problems usually with being hard...and honestly - I haven't done blow jobs or manual stimulation on him in years (no stamina on my part).

I really would like to learn how to help him enjoy things more - its like he does so much to make me feel good - but due to some of my upbringing and my lack of stamina with my hands/arms (muscles) - I feel like I'm letting him down.

We are very similar to you, both in terms of age, size and coming to toys after many years. We echo what a couple of people have said. Truly, check out the Liberator cushions that are on here(wedges, ramps), they changed our lives, without exxageration. Positions that we couldn't enjoy due to not being in our 20's and not athletic all of a sudden became enjoyable and doable for both of us.
In terms of toys, all of what we are about to suggest are available here. Yes, they are a little expensive, but do yourselves a favor and buy quality. We only get toys now that come with true warranties that have real companies behind them.
Get a few clitoral stimulators (think bullet vibes, we LOVE the We-Vibe line- check out the Tango or Salsa, and also the Touch).
Get a couple of good vibrator dildoes-like the LELO line others have mentioned, or even better the new Jopen line-WOW.
A couple of people have also already mentioned cock rings. Get one that vibrates so that you both get stimulated.
You might also enjoy the Hitachi Wand, and/or the Eroscillator. The Hitachi is great because you can actually use it as well as a massager for you after you find you are both sore/achy because you are both more enthusiastically enjoying sex for longer!
For your husband, if you really want to get him off, look into the Fleshlight line and the Tenga line.

You mean - being sore and achey is NORMAL?

I was really getting worried that maybe something was wrong with me.

Sorry - I know that may sound funny - but I don't mean it that way. I think now I'm using muscles I never used before and I get sore afterwards but I was scared something was wrong!

Yes! Totally normal.

The maturbator sleeves aid in a great hand job! If you can get one with a hole on both ends, you can turn it into a fantastic blowjob! I have MS and my grip gets weak in no time, but the texture of a sleeve gives him great stimulation and it makes me feel good that I can bring him that kind of pleasure (they help me give him better hand/blowjobs!)

I'd recommend definitely getting these bullets! link Very inexpensive and we've used them countless times with awesome results.

Our top three picks would be:
1. Lube (We go with Sliquid brand because I don't have any reactions to the ingredients.)
2. The Eroscillator (A good oscillating clit vibe with multiple attachments. The Soft Finger attachment is our favorite.)
3. A Betty's Barbell (a metal Kegel exercise dildo) which I use for my Kegel exercises. We also have fun using it together because it just feels good, especially when used along with the Eroscillator.

Definitely a NICE lubricant.

We must be really different, the first toy we bought was an anal probe very similar to the Sasha grey signature swell wand.
As far as basics, it really depends on what you enjoy the most. For us, I really like anal toys and clitoral vibrators. So for us it would be:
1. a good clitoral vibrator
2. a water based lube and a silicone based lube
3. all kinds of anal toys (at least one stainless steel, one glass and one silicone).
4. ropes, cuffs, blindfold for BDSM fun.

We're a larger couple too. I highly recommend a positioning toy like the I Like it Doggie Style. Here's a link to my review where I talk about how it makes me feel almost weightless during sex and how easy it makes things on my joints, etc. link

I would recommend going to a brick and mortar store to look at all the different sorts of toys together. Since you are brand new at this, you need a visual aid to understand what some of these things do. If you are comfortable, ask the clerk questions. Remember the styles of toys that you like and then come back here- you will find a lot more variety and probably better prices.

I really like a cock ring. they are pretty easy to use and have low maintance.

basics i would say are discreet vibrator (for internal and external), lubes, cock rings, smaller type dildos or anal toys (if you're into that)... really, i think it's up to you guys to decide! only you know what you're comfortable with. we've only just started as well and material is one of the main things i look for, only the best! i've only gone with silicone so far.

First and foremost, lots of guys rave about Fleshlights.

My sex is generally female centric, but as far as basic toys that could add to his enjoyment, you could see if he has any interest in butt play. If so, invest in some nice prostate stimulating plugs (silicone, glass, or stainless steel). Njoy's Pure Wand would be a great investment for an anal probe (or a g-spot toy for you). If he has any interest in pegging, consider a slim silicone cock (like Tantus's Silk series) and a hot leather harness (like Aslan Leather's Jaguar).

And as always, quality lube. I love Sliquid (and they're Texas based!) and in general you'd want both a water based (for use with silicone toys) and silicone based (for everything else).

Obviously everyone is different. I have read posts from some people who were angry about having bought a toy based upon posts, or reviews. So, I would suggest you consider that mistakes can happen. We first started with the Hitachi. It was a hit for a short while, since my wife knew of nothing else. Soon after though, it was causing her to go numb. She no longer could finish. But, in retrospect, maybe she never did climax. Because most of these feelings were so new to her. What she experienced next was the Eroscillator. OMG did this forever change her. She was able to control the rate of escalating emotions until it took her over the top. I suspect, unti the Eroscillator, she did not know what climaxing really was. She even experienced squirting for the first time. It was eye opening and life altering for us. Beware though that this was our experience, and so, it might not be the same for you.
