For us, it's relatively simple. Make sure neither one of has to use the bathroom (we don't do enemas, etc.) and find a good thick lubricant. I wear a harness and always allow him to "push" himself on me. Once he lets me know he's ready, I'm free to thrust as much as I want. Communication & a good lubricant go a long way.

I believe the answer to this depends entirely on how you plan on playing. Lube types and amounts can make a world of difference with each kind of play.

In my experience:
For mostly outside stimulation (little if any penetration) I find the cheaper lubes work just fine. If you are planning on stimulating for a long time, go with a moisturizer. You don't want to rub it raw, which cheap lubes are want to do.
For penetration play, I find that the thicker, gel like lubes work well, as you can apply them directly to whatever is doing the penetrating. Remember that water based lubes don't last forever though, and be prepared to apply more, or use a misting bottle to bring a second wind of life into the existing lube.
For more intense play (fisting for example) I find that the thicker the lube you can find the better. Remember to make sure your toy/barrier and the kind of lube match. Oil based lube and latex DO NOT match. Given that my partner and I are monogamous and do not use latex, we prefer a good sized portion of vaseline. It doesn't absorb the way waterbased lubes do, and it it easy to work with. I play on the outside with the vaseline as I would any lube, but as I get further and further in, I try to make sure that I take some extra vaseline with me to leave inside of her. If all the lubrication is on the outside, it can hurt a whole lot with each time you pull out - even a little. Lubing the inside of one's lovely parts is just as important as lubing the outside. You may also want to make sure you lube the inside of the butt cheeks as well, as your push and pull is likely to rub up against them as well.
Beyond any chemical, I believe that relaxation is the best lube. You'd be amazed at how far you can get comfortably without any lube at all if you are completely relaxed and trust your partner.

For extended anal sex, my wife and I use a 5cc medicine syringe (no needle) to inject 2-3cc's of lube into the anus, then lube my cock or toy well and insert slowly at the recieving partner's pace. My favorite lubes are Maximus and Doc Johnson's regular anal lube. She was an anal virgin before me and within two months time she went from barely being able to take my well lubed finger in her ass, to medium sized butt plugs and the full 7" and 5-5/8" around of my cock in that time. She enjoys anal sex on a fairly regular basis now (a few times a month)!

One word. Silicone.

I wouldn't suggest vasoline, it takes months before the body gets "rid" of it. If used in the vagina it is particularly harmful by staying in there foerever for one but also bacteria will stick and grow on the vasoline which means health issues!

I agree with Carrie Ann, silicone lasts longer than waterbased lube and is very slick. I use a thick waterbased lube.

I find that Vasolene doesn't really lube to well, either - it's too thick and "grabs". Among the water lubes Maximus is great, and I've started using Gun Oil H2O as well (a bit thinner, but works very well - warning: it does contain a bit of aspartame). If things are going to last a bit longer I do like the oil-based lubes, since the rectum can suck the water out of some lubes. Boy Butter is good, or for big, slow moving things (such as my A-Bomb or fisting) I use a shortening/coconut oil mix. It's messy, but stays around.
Squirting a bit inside is great, especially if you're using smooth toys. Sometimes the anus squeegees off enough of the lube that it can start to pull. A small syringe is very good, but usually you can get enough packed in by using fingers creatively.
