I use menstrual cups, and my mother as well. I think my youngest sister should use them, and she wants to. She visited hubby and I and told us. She said her pads and tampons leak and smell. But my mother thinks she's too young. I don't even understand why the hell she would be too young.
Would you let your daughter of 14 years old use menstrual cups?

There is really no reason why she shouldn't it's not age dependent. If you menstruate you can use them. Ask your mom what her issue is with it.

I personally don't see a difference between tampons and cups, as long as she doesn't have any issues inserting it, or with cleaning it properly. I honestly can't even think of a reason against it!

If she's old enough to have her period, then she's old enough to choose the product best for her to deal with her period. I don't see any reason why she shouldn't get one if she wants it.

If I had a daughter, I would have no problem with it. It'd be much cheaper in the long run!

I wouldn't have a problem with it. I agree with LD29, if she is old enough to have a period, she should choose the product that she feels the most comfortable with.

I'd have no problem with it, though it might be painful for her. I know when I was a virgin, I had a really hard time inserting tampons.

It doesn't make sense to factor in age when it comes to choosing a way to deal with menstrual flow. If she'd like to use a cup, then she should be allowed to give it a try.
I'd ask your mother precisely why she thinks your sister is "too young," especially since she's using tampons to begin with. Seems a little illogical to me to be fine with one insertable product but not another.

I don't see why it would be a problem either. Why should using menstrual cups be age-dependent?

I really don't think age should factor in at all. That doesn't make sense to me.
As long as she can find one the right size, and it's comfortable for her, she has every right to do what she sees fit with her body AND her menstrual flow!

I suppose I'd let my daughter choose. I don't have kids, but my mom made me wear pads until I was 14 (I started at 11) and I remember how much I loathed them.

Saying she's too young just seems silly. Shouldn't she want her daughter to use something that works and isn't going to cause TSS?
12/06/2012
I don't see why not. I would have loved to have discovered them earlier.

Weird. If she's old enough to menstruate, she's old enough to make her own hygiene decisions. If I had a daughter, I'd want her to have all the options and decide for herself. She's the one who has to live with it.

Agreed! They're much safer, and still comfortable!

That is weird. If she is menstruating...she should be allowed to use her choice item to deal with it. Very unfair of your mother. Personally, I'd probably buy her one and gift it to her and tell your mom you had no idea. You just heard her say how bad she wants one.

Exactly my thoughts on it, well put!

Yeah I feel like she should get to pick what she uses, but if she starts using a cup or tampons it might be a good idea to use pads as backup for a couple of cycles until she gets the hang of it so there aren't any leaks.
12/06/2012
I got my first cycle at 11, I've been using tampons since that first one.
It's really not an issue, she's not 'too young'. It's HER body, HER period it should be HER decision how she would like to contain it.

If she's using a tampon, how is a cup any different? It's her decision, if she wants to then she should.

Believe me, I think this is awfully weird myself. But then again, I had to sneak the fact that I used tampons for 5 years when I was little!
12/06/2012
I think someone can use a menstrual cup the day they start their period even if they are 9 years old. In fact, they should...they're more likely to forget about a pad or tampon, and a menstrual cup can't cause TSS!
12/06/2012
Sure. I don't see the issue with it. If she is old enough and mature enough to understand how to use it (and she should if she can use tampons), I don't see the issue. My mom had the same strange idea about being "too young" for tampons when I was in my mid-teens, although I do use a menstrual cup now and have for a few years.

She should use them if she wants to. I don't see a problem here.
