Washing Out During/After Period?

Contributor: Envy Envy
I've been wondering something for a while now and I wonder if anyone does this or if it's safe to do it....

I know douching is bad as it messes up PH levels and all. However, is it possible to just use it to flush things out in the shower while on your period?

I am a very heavy bleeder and it lasts for a week. I try to wash as much as i can in the shower, but I can't seem to get the blood well enough at times and when i come out and towel dry, I get some on the towel.

Is it safe to 'rinse out' during this time? Sometimes the pads irritate me and make me afraid I will get another UTI with how much blood I have that comes out of me. (Especially when you have the oh-so-lovely clots sitting on the pad.)

Sorry if this post is a little TMI.

During foreplay and when having sex, which of the five senses is your strongest sense when it comes to turning you on: sight, sound, taste, smell, touch?
Recently, I had an experience with a jelly material toy, but the smell was so bad that I couldn't enjoy it. It brought me back to when I did a sense.

Technically you could do it, but I don't know how effective or safe it would be.

If you're in the shower, I would recommend masturbating. The vaginal contractions from orgasm are more likely to force the uterine lining out than douching will. There is the added benefit of released endorphins, which can help with cramps.

If pads are irritating you, you may want to try buying non-bleached (i.e. no chemical) pads from a specialty/health store. Or you may want to try cloth pads, like the kind sold by Party in My Pants. Sometimes just changing the type/brand of pad — they are not all the same — or changing the pad more often can be a big help.

I do in the shower sometimes, but not often. It's hard for me to stand up, and at times the water distracts me.

I wonder though, if there's something that can be used that's reusable for the cleaning out. Most things you buy you have to throw away after using, does anyone know of something that can be reused?

Douching is bad but it's good to use a feminine wash. I do this as well after each cycle so that everything feels fresh.

Do you have one of those shower-only setups where you can only stand, or do you have a shower/bathtub combo? If the latter, you can always sit or lay down (though the latter may be tricky depending on where your shower head points) to masturbate. I play in the shower a lot, and I almost never stand up to do so. A good waterproof vibrator can also make it easier by doing some of the work for you.

There are reusable douches, some sold right here on Eden. That said, douching at any time of the month is not recommended. The vagina is a self-cleaning system that usually doesn't need any help, and even during your period forcibly flushing it out can disrupt your pH balance and wash away good bacteria. I used to douche during my period, too, but stopped when I learned that it could leave me open for yeast infections.

I strongly agree with Petite Valentine that you should perhaps try out unbleached pads (Abe's Market has a good selection), or try cloth pads (I personally think the designs at Lunapads are pretty cool). Or, if you're comfortable with the idea, look into menstrual cups. I find mine to be WAY more comfortable than any pad or tampon I've ever tried.

At this stage I just tend to masturbate in the shower while on my period, which gets a good amount of it out and hurries it along without having to use an actual douche.
