Toys and bladder infections

Contributor: Checkmate Checkmate
My wife unfortunately gets bladder infections 3-4 times a year, and just recently put a connection between using a vibrator internally with the infections.

She never seems to get one after using vibrators externally, but seems to think that the UTI always shows up the day after inserting one in her vagina. We have tried to figure out the connection, and are wondering if anyone else may have the same problem?

Also wondering if there might be a connection with lubes used?

I'm sure you are aware that the uretheral tube that leads to the bladder is not connected to the vaginal canal, though it could be that using something internally would cause bacteria from the outside to be pushed up the urethra. However, if this is the case, she would probably notice issues after sex as well. My suggestion would be to use only silicone toys and sterilize them between uses to ensure no cross contamination and (she should always do this regardless) make sure she urinates immediately after sex or masturbation to remove any bacteria that may have become pushed up into her urethral tract.

Also, on rereading your post I noticed that you said the infection always shows up the day after using a vibe. Most likely this is nothing more than a coincidence as it would likely take longer for a full UTI to develope. It could be that using the vibe, and the resulting contractions during orgasm, irritate the bladder and make the already present infection feel more painful? Or maybe they aren't UTI's at all, but some sort of allergic reaction that is being misdiagnosed? She should probably see her OB/GYN for more information and an exam.

What sort of material are the vibes made of?

If they are porous, they could be harboring bacteria and since they can't be sterilized, may be the culprit. I got rid of all my jelly toys in the last year or so, due to irritation they were causing (took me a long time to put two and two together on that though -- if not for Eden I'd never have considered my toys were causing the problem).

Lubes can cause issues too. Glycerin and parabens cause me numerous problems, from burning to itching, and even swelling! We recently switched to Hathor Aphrodisia Lubricant Pure, and I am pleased to report, thus far it is amazing! I love it and it seems to agree with my body too. I am VERY pleased with this one!
