Sex (Penetration) during a UTI - yes or no?

Contributor: Hot 'N Sexy TexasMama Hot 'N Sexy TexasMama
After an awesome playtime this morning - I went to the bathroom and cried. Turned out that somehow I had developed a UTI and was hurting like crazy. Not sure if it was from the night before or this morning or what.

I've been on cranberry juice all day and took a vicodin which I have to use "as needed" for back pain (I rarely ever need them so I didn't feel bad taking one for this).

My question is - should we back off on penetration for the next couple of days? I can tell that the cranberry juice is working and I think we caught it really early.

We're going through and making sure all the toys are REALLY clean - especially since our "Dr. Flexi" as my honey calls him - is a hard jelly toy. (He's sorta nicknamed after "Dr. Sexy" in Supernatural).

Anyway - how long should we wait - if at all?

I'm sure we can still play without penetration but #$&(#$# - its just not the same!

I am in the exact same boat right now. The only difference is that I'm a few days ahead of you. I had been drinking 6-8 glasses of cranberry juice a day and was just starting to feel relief... so what did I do? Well, I had intercourse, of course! LOL. It was with a condom and I urinated immediately after and took a shower ... and it's only made my UTI worse I have a feeling I might have to go to the Dr. for this one now.. ughh

I'm going to say wait, but I'll be checking back to see what others say!

Well, it varies from person to person. It all depends on your comfort level. If you are still in pain or feeling uncomfortable, don't force yourself as you will do more harm than good. Some women, like myself, are fine having intercourse and continuing penetration through a UTI, but for others it can be extremely painful.

Basically, if you are feeling fine, you can resume sexual activity. If it starts to feel uncomfortable, stop and wait a day to a few days and see.

You could've had a more serious case which forced the bacteria further into the canal.

It just figures that our sex life would take off like a rocket (pocket or otherwise) and this would happen.

I think we'll take it easy tonight and I'll keep on drinking cranberry juice and see how I feel tomorrow.

Thankfully, I have learned how to take care of him orally and I can still orgasm clitorally - but have been so spoiled lately.

Thanks for the advice. I really don't want to have to go see the doctor for this (retired military - using military hospital..just don't feel comfortable since I have a brand new doctor now).

I always back off penetration for a few days with a UTI. Don't know if it's mandetory, but I always think it will clear up faster.

This used to happen to me and at one point it was chronic. My Doctor finally told me, "You need to pee immediately after sex, every time!" This simple step, along with drinking lots of water, making sure to avoid sugary drinks, and taking Cranberry Extract Softgels daily, has completely helped me avoid UTI's for nearly the last 5 years.

This specifically, is why we only play with 100% body safe materials. I finally put two and two together and found with jelly/rubber toys, I would nearly always have some kind of vaginal issue going on, whether it be UTI, yeast infection, burning, something...It can also be brought on by some ingredients in lubes too. I was fine with glycerin and parabens until one day about 6 months ago, now I can't deal with them at all, they make me feel like I am on fire.

I would back off for awhile until you are feeling better. But, make sure you get in with a doctor. A UTI left untreated can lead to a bladder infection and worse, a kidney infection.

I have never had one before. I do think it would be wise not lay off it till it clears up.

I stay far away from sex when I'm having any kind of issue down there. The discomfort makes me feel unsexy in the first place, and making the problem worse is just such a regret afterwards.

Why don't you all see or call your doctor or nurse practioner and give a urine speciman? There are many things that cause abdominal pain/cramps besides a urinary tract infection (UTI). If it is a UTI, the certaiin course of treatment is several days of anitbiotic treatment--and use all that you are given, even though you should feel better in only a couple of days. At the same time you should ask about sexual contact.

After you contact your doc, then post your feelings.

I get a lot of UTIs and stay far away from sex when I get them because it hurts very badly if I don't. It also seems to prolong the infection. Agree with others on peeing after sex. Also agree that jelly toys seem to cause UTIs, at least for me. Cranberry juice helps, but if you can sum up the courage to go to the new doctor and get some antibiotics it will probably clear up faster.

Antibiotics and cranberry juice are your friends! Make sure you get tested at the doc's office to make sure that it's just a UTI and not anything else causing it. You can never be too careful.

As for penetration, it would be in your best interest to avoid till it's gone. You can force the bacteria further up there, which of course can prolong infection. And make sure you pee every single time you have sex, be it with a toy or your partner

As others have said, penetration is not a good idea right now. Also, if you have a UTI, you need to be on antibiotics. Vicodin and cranberry juice or pills is not going to cut it (juice may even make it worse, because of the sugar.) Just a word of warning from someone who's suffered multiple UTIs in the past..

NO sex. If you're anything like me, it hurts WAY to bad to pee to even think about it. Plus, honestly, when I had mine, I had to pee too often to do it. I couldn't even wear jeans; only sweats.

You should probably not have sex. Definitely.

Also, there are pills you can get (not pain relievers) specifically for UTI discomfort at the drug store. If it's a bad one, they won't ease all the discomfort but in my experience they still make a heck of a lot of difference. Only downside is it turns your pee a dark amber color which may also tint any type of discharge you have while you take the pills and can potentially stain underwear. Don't worry though, because it's supposed to change the color of your pee and what not. Works surprisingly well. It's particularly helpful in making yourself at least comfortable enough to pee with greater ease, and the more you pee the better off you'll be. My bouts with UTIs were usually plagued by a feeling that I had to pee, but an inability to go. So. These helped.
