I liked Friends a lot and still watch the reruns every afternoon but HIMYM is fantastically more witty, daring and honest about how the characters approach relationships. There's actually substance in each of the characters instead of just a bunch of friends hanging around drinking coffee and meddling in each other's sex lives.

I LOVE the wit of HIMYM. Friends always bordered too much on "cheesy" fun for me (granted, I was watching it as a pre-teen, so I should probably give it another try).

It really doesn't change the older you get, in fact it gets worse. Haha. Stick with HIMYM. And yay Lily's pregnant!!

I agree. I watched every single episodes of Friends a few times so long ago and now HIMYM is new and a little more upbeat for my tastes. Overall they are both good shows but I have to tip my hat to HIMYM.

They're both very different shows made in different times for audiences with different mindsets. I might go as far as to say that HIMYM has all the wit and edginess that Friends couldn't have because TV wasn't quite ready for it. I think that had HIMYM been on when Friends was, it wouldn't have done as well and Friends is too tame to be relevant now. That being said, while I like Friends, I love HIMYM. I'm watching it online right now and I'm about halfway through season 4

I don't get HIMYM. I think I am just the wrong generation for it. I find it irrelevant to my life. And not at all funny. My middle daughter (college age,) however, loves it, wants me to watch it with her. I can't force myself to. I don't get this show. I have watched it a few times and to me it's that blonde guy trying to get laid and all his friends watching him and making barely cohesive comments. And drinking. And WTF does the title have to do with the show?
I was never a big fan of Friends either, (My Man hated it) but we'd sit there like zombies watching it because good shows were on before and after it on Thursday evening. While My Man made comments as to the lack of masculinity of most of the male characters. (I believed he refereed to them as "weenies.")
The show on now that hits us the best is Modern Family. I think Happy Endings is cute, but again, My Man hates it. (He says it's a pale comparison to Friends, which he also hated.) We both watch Love Bites, which we both find really funny and relevant.
My Man tends to like well made cop shows, like the recently deceased Chicago Code. We LOVED that show, but they canceled it without giving it a chance, by saying it was "too expensive to make." Formula shows (basically the same thing every week) like the myriad incarnations of CSI and the new Hawaii 5-0 (basically CSI shot in Hawaii) go on and on, but a break through show like Chicago Code gets cancelled. I don't get it. Maybe you had to be a Chicagoan to get the reference to the local politics.

I have to echo Sam's thought. I picked other because I couldn't decide which show I liked better. Both are excellent for the time they are on tv. Friends was awesome to me during its prime time and HIMYM is awesome now during its prime time, but they are different shows. Friends would definitely be too tame now and I like the edge and "more real" relationships of HIMYM now. Can't go wrong with either show in my opinion.

Friends was goofy and iconic. No show before or since (despite trying) captured the chemistry that was not just the writing, but the actors.

I much prefer How I met Your Mother. Friends got annoying to me. HIMYM is much more clever, and the episode styles vary, which keeps it fresh. They also pull on heartstrings like Friends never could. Between Marshall's dad's death and Robin being barren, they hit some major life events, and handled them well.
Also, Friends didn't have Neil Patrick Harris. Major points for him.

I think there are many similarities between the two. I watch both and I think they are absolutely the same genre, just that one is old(er) and the other is new and still running.

I don't think they're that similar.
07/10/2011
Weird. I don't think they are similar.
07/11/2011
It's very deceiving to me because if you look at it from the outside and don't watch either regularly they do appear to be similar, but having watched most episodes of Friends and all of HIMYM so far they are definitely different shows. Maybe I'm just weird but I kind of get it when I hear either side of the argument.

if anything it's more like seinfeld than friends. the friends living in new york, the one regular guy (Ted/Jerry) the kookie guy (Barney/Kramer) attractive female (robin/elaine) and weird, somewhat crazy guy (george Marshall and Lily). admittedly the last one's a stretch, but i stand by the others. Also, the weird side characters, like blah blah, the soup nazi, muva, the dopplegangers, the captain, the bubbleboy and so on. the only difference is that HIMYM has character development.
11/15/2011
I really wouldn't have even thought about comparing the two. They seem pretty different to me.
11/15/2011
No.
12/05/2011
I think so, they are both about friends living close in the big city. Romantic drama and comedy and they are both totally awesome.
