Question for women that use instead cups....(maybe a little TMI... sorry)

*MEN: I promise, you will regret reading further than this line. You'd be best off to just click away now....lol*

I've been attempting to use them for the last few months. I really like the concept, and WANT to be able to use them. I do alright around the house, but I can't wear them when I leave the house, because it seems like they tend to leak after just a few hours, when you are supposed to be able to wear them for 12. My period isn't particularly heavy or anything, so I'm not sure why this is the case. Also, removal is a disaster for me. At home, I'm lucky the sink is right next to the toilet, because my hands get covered in blood, and sometimes, when I pull it out, it splatters EVERYWHERE. If I tried to remove it in public, I'd have to sit in the stall until nobody was in the bathroom and then run to the sink asap....lol. I've tried putting it in different ways, and readjusting it, and all that.... but nothing seems to make a difference. Any ideas that would help?

I don't know about the instead cup, specifically, but I use the Diva Cup. The first few times I used it, I did experience leaking, but I no longer do. It may just be that I've gotten used to it, and know how to put it in so that it seals properly, or that I've just gotten into the groove.

When I remove it, though, I do on occasion get my fingers bloody if it's not coming out easily--but I guess that's a good thing, because that means the seal was done properly and leakage isn't happening.

However, when you remove the cup (and you don't splatter it everywhere) is the cup full? If so, you may wish to consider a cup with a larger capacity. As for removing it, sans splatter, do your best to keep it level when you're removing it. I wish I had more experience with that particular cup, but the Diva Cup is very different stylistically so while I could offer advice, I don't think it would be too relevant because my cup is so different than yours. Either way, best of luck!

I have not experienced a cup before, but are you using the right one? I know what women over a certain age and who have children have different ones, so just want to make sure you are using the right one. Also maybe a change in the brand, since all the styles are different and just because you fit in that size category does not really mean that is what is going to fit you. So you might need the larger size since you are leaking.

The odd thing is, the first month I used them, I didn't have a problem. I'm pretty sure these are the only brand of disposable ones and I didn't want to commit to a reusable one until I was sure I was going t like them.

I cheat and dump mine out every time I visit the restroom. I know you're not supposed to reuse them, but I use hand sanitizer before I pull it out, and I keep everything pretty clean while I am dumping it. I just wipe with toilet paper and put it back. That keeps me from overflowing in public, and also cuts down on the mess. I do find that it will contain everything while I sleep at night, which is worth the cost of the whole box for me since I cannot find a tampon or pad that will let me get more than a few hours of sleep. I do try to sleep with a towel or something nearby because I have some leakage when I first stand up in the morning.

I have problems with messes when I take it out too. My problem is that my cervix is slightly offset and I have to twist the cup to get it out. Once I figured that out, I started just preparing by having toilet paper wrapped on one hand to catch most of the mess as I used the other hand to pull it out. Pay attention next time you take it out-- you may be twisting or bending it somehow to cause the spillage. The Instead is a little more shallow and a lot more pliable than most of the reusable cups, so I would guess that is a common problem.

I tried using the instead cups. I've never been able to get the hang of using them so I gave up and went back to tampons. I don't have any ideas for you to prevent leaking, but at least you know you aren't the only one to have trouble with them.
