Pain after a transvaginal ultrasound?

Contributor: Nyx (Under the Covers) Nyx (Under the Covers)
Has anyone experienced pain after a transvaginal ultrasound? I had a diagnostic one today (about 12 hours ago), and even though the ultrasound itself was only somewhat uncomfortable, I've felt bruised and achy since (and I hurt around my right ovary). I had a little spotting after the exam, but otherwise I think everything went normally.

(About me: Not pregnant; ultrasound was to rule out a mass or cyst)

Has anyone else had experiences with this?

Yes, post-TVU can be extremely uncomfortable. There are a number of variables: equipment, technician, your body, if you can relax, time of the month, medical conditions, etc so feeling achy and a little bit of spotting is not abnormal. I wouldn't worry unless it continues for more than 24 hours. In that case I would call the doctor's office.

I had one last month too, and I experienced some cramping afterwards. It makes sense to me, especially if the reason you went in for it was pain. I was having severe cramping after sex, so it seemed logical that I'd have cramping after the ultrasound too.

I hope you recover soon!

Thank you! I'm still mildly achy, but am feeling much better. I have a follow-up GYN appointment scheduled for this week, so will bring it up then, but it helps to know that other people also have experienced this and it isn't necessarily indicative of a big problem.

Yeah, I can totally understand that fear! I felt the exact same fear myself!

I never had pain with sex ever before, and then suddenly was having REALLY intense pain/cramping. It was right up there with my severe kidney stone pain. So I went in, and it turned out to be a follicular ovarian cyst on my right ovary. Strange, but I was on a different formulation of hormonal birth control than what I normally take, and my periods had been getting worse and worse all year on that pill.

Anyway, once my period was over and I got back on my regular birth control it went away and I have no more pain, no more problems.

I hope yours turns out to be something benign that easily resolves!
