I had a Mirena IUD inserted about two weeks ago, and since then I've had fairly heavy bleeding. Not quite as heavy as a normal period, but pretty heavy. And it's thin too. Unlike menstrual blood, it doesn't seem to have any mucous. It's mostly blood. Anyone else had this experience? Is this a bad sign? What else can I expect from the Mirena IUD?
Mirena IUD and bleeding - what's normal?

I had one of those. I had to get that thing the heck out of my vagina. For me, the Mirena caused HEAVY and long periods (like 7 days of bleeding) and cramps that felt like my uterus was falling out. I bled at random times with Mirena as well as when I was supposed to. On the other hand, I have a friend who loves hers. Her periods have stopped completely and she never has any cramps or side effects. Have you called your doctor?

You can expect to bleed for up to a month, mine lasted about that long. On the plus side, after you stop bleeding randomly, your periods should lighten up. Mine disappeared completely after a year, as did my cramps from hell!

I got Mirena about 6 months ago and did not experience bleeding, myself. In fact after the first few days, I haven't seen anything more than EXTREMELY light spotting once in a while- nothing even near a period. Everyone reacts to it differently so if this persists for more than a month, I'd call up your doctor just to be certain things are fine. But I know bleeding is fairly common

I have a follow-up appointment in three weeks. They make sure to check in and make sure everything is fine about a month after inserting an IUD at Planned Parenthood. They told me to expect bleeding, but I just wasn't expecting it to be this much. I hope this goes away soon.

I tried calling them to find out if this was normal, but there was literally no one I could call on a weekend. Planned Parenthood directed me to this clinic, and then I called the clinic. They asked if I was a member, and I said no, but that P.P had told me to call them. They told me they couldn't help me and that P.P. always directed people to them and they wished P.P would stop doing that. It was a really fucked up situation. I couldn't get help anywhere. I did a google search on the Mirena, and what I found suggested that what I was experiencing was normal, but I still plan on calling them on Monday, when I can hopefully talk to a clinician.

The bleeding slowed down a lot. When I posted this discussion, the flow was barely lighter than my usual period, but now it's light enough that I can stick to pantiliners and at the end of the day, there were only a few spots. I didn't end up calling Planned Parenthood because it's ok. If the bleeding gets heavy again, then I'll definitely call them, but I hope it doesn't!

Oh, and some of you have been talking about cramps from the Mirena - I had cramps the rest of the day after I got it put in, and the next day. Horrible cramps that made me feel like I was going to throw up. For the rest of the week, it was just a dull ache, and I haven't had any cramps since then.
This whole process has been such a hassle, but I really hope that my body accepts the IUD. It will be so much more convenient than taking a pill every day.

I bled for about 6 weeks straight when I first got it 2.5ish years ago. Not a lot, but just enough to be annoying.
However, the good news is that now that I've had it a while, my periods are so few and far between, and when they do come, they're so light I barely even need a liner. And it is so much easier and more cost effective than pills.
Give it time, it does take some adjustment. Good luck!
