Menstrual Cup Brands?

Contributor: Ryuson Ryuson
My mum expressed interest in purchasing me a menstrual, but I can't seem to find much info comparing the different brands/styles! Do you use one? If so which type do you use? Does it work well?
Thank you so much!

I have a Diva Cup, but they sent me the wrong size and I haven't been able to make use of it as of yet

I've got the perfect thing for you!

Check this out. How helpful is that?

I personally use a Lunette. I chose it over the other brands due to the flat stem it has. Others have hollow stems and that seems difficult to keep clean. This seems much like a thing you need to test out to find out which styles work best for your body type, but hopefully that link with the comparisons help. There's also a bunch of videos on YouTube comparing cup sizes and how much fluid they'll hold, if that's any helpful!

I use Instead, and I like them, although they can be a bit messy.

You didn't offer the Keeper, which was my first cup, as an option. That's the latex version of the silicone Moon Cup, which is what I have now. I think I actually liked the latex one a little better (but I lost it when I moved, and the place I went the *ahem* day I realized only had Moon Cups.

The lady at that store was asking how I'd chosen the Moon Cup over the Diva cup (which they also stocked), and I told her I was familiar with the brand and had liked it. She said it was a wise choice, that most people though the Diva Cup stems were less comfortable.

Also, Moon Cups / Keepers have graduated cylinder lines, which makes nerdy little me a little happier than not having graduated cylinder lines.

Wow! That's an awesome link! Even after seeing it I'm leaning towards the Lunette! The tube stem is the main reason I was, but the lack of a large ridge also is a plus!

If you don't mind me asking, what size cup do you use? I'm thinking of upgrading to a size 2 but the firmness of the silicone sounds a bit difficult to use.

I have the DivaCup and love it. With so many options, it makes it nice because each person can find one that works for their anatomy. Good luck picking yours!

I've had the DivaCup for a few cycles and love it.

Here's some more info comparing brands: Size chart and Another size chart
Both of these came from my favorite source for cup info: Live Journal's menstrual cup community

I use a disposable brand called either "Instead" or "SoftCup." I haven't bought a Luna or Diva or Moon cup, because when I was younger they only made them in latex, which I am allergic to.

Now, I am in early Peri-menopause and My GYN says I could go an other 10 years like this (OH JOY!) or my next period could be my last. There's no way to tell. I'm not going to invest in a cup that I might have for only a few months. So, I use the disposable ones, sometimes.

I find them weird. I check my flow when I use the bathroom, and with the cup in you.. um.. wipe and there's no blood. It's kind of weird for me, as I've been having periods a LONG time and have a way of doing it. I'm also always thinking, "This thing is in me." and I want to go take it out. I'm strange.

I have used both the Moon Cup (US) and the Lunette, and I switched permanently to the Lunette. I love the flat stem, and it is softer and more comfortable and has a higher capacity, so I don't have to empty it as often. Both are great alternatives to tampons/pads.

Hm, I didn't think $30 was really an "investment", but I guess it for sure wouldn't be worth it for just one period. Still, how much are you spending per time on the pads and other cups?

Thanks! It's really nice to hear which one people prefer if they've tried two!

It's hard to tell how much I spend on menstrual supplies because we have three menstruating women in our home, myself and the two daughters that live with us. I buy stuff and it disappears (I make more midnight runs to Walgreens...) I don't use many pads per period, if I use them. I usually only use one or two cups most months per period, myself.

I have a Diva Cup that I bought almost a year ago. I love it. It works well for me and on my lighter days I can go the full 12 hours without having to change it. The only time it has ever failed me was either when I didn't create a good seal (only at the beginning, when it was new) and this past month. This month I had my IUD taken out and there was no amount of menstrual supplies that could have truly helped with the aftermath. I was flowing too fast and I leaked out of my cup every two hours (I think the DC holds about an 1/8 cup of fluid so that should tell you how heavy the bleeding was... On average it will take me 4-8 hours to fill a cup on my heaviest days)

I'm planning on getting an ablation this winter so I, hopefully, won't need it anymore soon.

Thanks for the response! I'm so sorry to hear about how awful this month has been, it sounds like when they put me on the shot! I was bleeding VERY heavily for about a month straight. Never went back on it!

I have an use a Diva Cup and I love it! Like a PP said, you don't need to change it as often on light days. It takes some getting used to with positioning, and when you know you're going to change/clean it, you may want to be using a toilet that is right next to a sink.

Ive always used tampons as well, but lately Ive felt kind of irritated by them. Just with my last 2 periods. So I figured id try a cup out.

I just tried Instead for the first time this last cycle and I really liked them too. You almost forget it's that time of the month! I also like that you can supposedly have sex with the Instead cup in, though we haven't tried yet.

I have a Diva cup and wouldn't dream of going without it. I HATE pads and tampons. The Diva cup allows me to feel free and I don't dread my period so much. It's just easier and FAR cheaper!

I don't use them, simply because I'm uncomfortable with the idea of them. But I have heard of them.
