Little red bumps after shaving..

Contributor: SMichelle SMichelle
I'm a bit frustrated. I cannot seem to get a nice, clean, smooth shave "down there".

The area will look and feel smooth the first day that I shave, but after that, I end up COVERED in little red bumps. The bumps don't hurt, but they aren't pretty. I'm not really sure what to do. I have tried various products and methods, but nothing seems to work.

Any advice?

Those are ingrown hairs/clogged pores. Best bet is to use either grapeseed oil, anti-bump cream (like Bikini Zone), or Clean & Clear Acne Spot Treatment. Something with salycitic(sp?) acid in it helps, too.

A suggestion is to do a salt-scrub down there before you shave - the salt kills any bacteria that could clog your pores, and acts an an exfoliant for ingrowns.

I hope some of this helps.

The lower half portion of this article is about red bumps, hope it can be of help to you.

I only use my epilator, and I don't have a red bump problem.

Witch Hazel soothes irritated skin, too.

What Epilator do you have? And it safe to use one "down there"?

Salt scrub? Good suggestion. I might have to try that.

I use an aftershave down there and it really helps my irritation (I use this one and love it! link )

I will check that one out. Love that it's offered on EF!

I'm going to read reviews, but just in case the reviews don't state -- does the bottle last a long while? $9.99 seems a bit pricey for a small bottle.

This is why I trim and not shave. The bumps I get from shaving are painful and extremely ugly and when the stubble comes in (only a few hours after I shave) its so itchy it makes me want to rip my skin off. More power to women who do like to shave but I hate it, I'd rather have hair and just keep it short.

For me, I just get the appearance of little red bumps the day after I shave. No itching or anything -- otherwise I'd probably stop shaving all together.

I'm determined to find a way to shave without the bumps coming, but so far nothing is working out for me.

I have the Emjoi Epi Slim, it's compact and easy to use down there, but you still have to be careful with it if you want to go completely bare. An epilator functions like a tweezer, so it will hurt a little but does a much tidier job than waxing.

Oh, and it's only $19.95! Awesome...that may be worth a try.

I just shave once a week on a regular basis and it seems to keep it clear

I get those spots too, but mine hurt! That's why shaving is a treat. I probably do it fully once every other month

I really do not think you can fix this. That is just what happens. Try only shaving with the grain and it will help a bit, keep it moisturized too. But the bumps will probably always happen. To stop getting bumps for myself I switched to waxing.

Things to help with the bumps:
Shave with the grain,
and for as long as you can- let the area air out. Those bumps are usually clogged pores- so putting clothes on top of the area immediately- that probably have dirt on them even if they've recently been washed- gets things in your pores.
