Ever Leave a Tampon in?

Contributor: sweetpea12 sweetpea12
Have you ever accidentally left a tampon in for a few days?? I have never done this because I'm really afraid of Toxic Shock.. but my roommate left a tampon in for almost 2 days because she forgot about it. She went to the school medical center and they said she was fine. Have you ever done this? And what did you do?

No I haven't I had a friend who did and didn't seem like anything happened to her she freaked out pretty bad when she realized it but she never went to the hospital or anything.

Toxic shock is actually really rare and she'd know if she had it. I'm pretty careful about it but probably push to 12+ hours on occasion. I've never had a problem.

I've heard about women getting infections as a result, but I have no personal experience with it. I can't imagine forgetting one, I find them very intrusive and uncomfortable.

So kids, don't try this at home (I am so outing myself)....

I never ever have weird odor or unusual vaginal issues, and then one day I started having this strange dead fish/metal odor, and it got worse and worse and this weird grey watery discharge... so I consulted Dr. Webmd and diagnosed myself with bacterial vaginosis. I jinked around with home remedies for a week, and then there was a little bit of blood, then more and duh-oh, it's time for my period but the smell is getting worse. I go to put a tampon in for my period and guess what? There was a left over in there from last month (yeah I'm not dating right now, obviously).

Took it out, smell all gone and no adverse affects.

I have never done that. I am always very careful when using tampons, but I have some serious vaginal issues so I am always keeping a close eye on what is going on down there.

Ooh, scary! Glad all ended well. I have a similar story to tell. You're not alone!

When I used tampons, I wore them overnight and never had a problem. In fact, I'd wear them much longer than the 12 hour limit sometimes, and nothing. Now I use a menstrual cup, and there are no TSS worries with that.

I once used an applicator tampon I was given by someone else. (I used OB w/no applicator normally.) I didn't know it, but the tampon in it was defective. There was a chunk of cotton that was separate, not attached to the body / string of the actual tampon. When I removed the tampon, the chunk stayed in. (I had no idea.) A few days later (after my period was over) the bloody, disgusting chunk came out when I was peeing. I freaked out, called the doctor, the whole 9 yards. I was totally fine though.

I think we've had it drilled into our heads almost too much, because I had a phobia about it too. But those who have TSS are really sick, you'd definitely know you were sick.

Nope, I'm pretty anal about hygiene and removing tampons every few hours when I'm on my period.

OMG it was AWFUL!!!!!!! I was in high school and forced to wear khakis for band. Of course khakis + period = my worse nightmare. So, I decided to try tampons. I thought I had taken it out but since I wasn't used to using them didn't really have a routine or clue what I was doing. It was extremely painful and I vowed never to use them again!!! I didn't get an infection or any consequences after I removed it but until I removed it and during removal it sucked!!

Yes, I have. For maybe 18 hours. I totally freaked out when I realized it.
