Lactation Before/During Menstruation? (PRIVATE VOTING)

Contributor: MeliPixie MeliPixie
Hey, everyone. I have something to talk about that I've not told anyone else (except for my mom, who is a nurse). I'm lactating. And it scares me a little bit.

Here's some history as to what's going on. When I was about 4, my grandma had a benign tumor removed from her breast. It was tiny. My great-grandma, the same grandma's mother, died from ovarian cancer. So I know that such problems run in the family.

I got my first period when I was ten. Ever since then, my breasts always get a bit swollen and sore for about a week before my period. (On the worst day, even with my most supportive bra, a bumpy car ride can be almost agony.) I've heard that's a normal occurence for many women, so I never thought anything of it.

However, since my senior year in high school (I was 16-17 at the time) my breasts have been expressing fluid. At first, like a mother's first milk, it was white, fatty, tinged lightly yellowish, and sticky. It was, for all intents and purposes, breastmilk. It happened the first time while performing a breast self-exam, I depressed lightly, and suddenly there it was, a tiny drop on my nipple.

Terrified, I collected it onto my finger, dressed myself carefully so as not to accidentally soak it up into any of my clothes, and privately showed my mom. She told me she didn't know why it was happening, and that "some women just lactate sometimes." But ever since that night, it's never stopped, though occasionally I'll have one or two dry days. I'm 23 now.

When I was 18 or 19 I had bloodwork done because it concerned me so much. All my hormone and sugar levels were normal, the only thing off was a very slightly elevated cholesterol level. (Which was to be expected, I've always been a little overweight and was taking two baking classes at the time.) I've never taken any form of birth control, and I've never been pregnant... I'd never even had sex or a boyfriend who I allowed to touch me intimately until I was 21. The doctor was stumped and no more tests were performed. But the fluid never stopped.

Over the years it's gone from milky white and thick to being a bit thinner, and more of a clear-white, but still kind of fatty and a bit sticky. And, though I'm embarrassed to admit it, I've tasted it. From the right breast, it's just a little bitter, and from the left, it's a little salty. That seemed odd to me.

Now, it's not a steady flow. It's a drop or two a day at the most, unless I get interested and start, uhm, playing with it. The amount increases during the week before my period, so that every day I'm producing about a quarter of a teaspoon. (I said it wasn't much!) At first, it was just one breast, the smaller of the two, but now they both do it.

I don't have a doctor or insurance anymore, so I'm asking all of you.
Do you have an idea as to what might be going on? Do you or a woman in your life experience something similar? Come muse with me, if you will.

wow i dont know wat to tell u aout the breast milk but i would definately make sure u have ur doctor regularly check ur ovaries because ovarian cancer can result from scars created from eggs breaking free and since u started so early (3 years earlier than most) it would be a good idea be on the look out

Well like I said before, I don't have a doctor anymore, and can't afford one Every few months, around the time I do my breast self-check, I press around my lower tummy to feel for any noticeable changes, but so far nothing. *crosses fingers for her luck to stay the same* There's not a lot I can do until I get more money... I make too much to qualify for medicaid, but not enough to afford insurance, and my work doesn't offer it. SUCK. XP

Do you have any low or no cost health clinics near you? You could check by calling your local health department, and they'd be able to give you some phone numbers more than likely. Most of them have sliding payment scales.

Some hospitals even provide private financial aid, so you might call around your local hospitals too, and see what kind of help you could get there. We have a hospital here with an attached clinic where med students do their residencies - and that clinic offers major discounts to the uninsured. Maybe your area would have something similar.

What did the doctor attribute it to when you were 18 or 19?

We do, but the area we live in has so many homeless that they get first-come first-serve... Whatever rights, and that doesn't include me. It's frustrating trying to find affordable healthcare. Does planned Parenthood to breast cancer screening types of procedures? There is one of those around here... somewhere.

The only hospital nearby that I know of, my boyfriend went to last year when he got the flu (or swine flu, they never actually told us what he had) and almost died. Their care was SO expensive, and they were completely unwilling to work it out. It was just final notice after final notice, and finally a huge hit to his credit score.

Back then, she told me it might be because of the breast stimulation (I had a paranoid streak where I performed self-checks every few days), but since then I've only checked maybe every four months, and it hasn't stopped, so I'm pretty sure that wasn't it.

Unfortunately, I can't offer up any possible answers, but I have experienced this off and on throughout the years, though not to the same degree as you. (Granted, I am pregnant at the moment, but even when I wasn't there was still some form of "discharge" going on.)

The thickness, color, and consistency change from time to time, but from what I've noticed it's more or less constant than just around my period. Also, I tend to get more from my right breast, which has always been the larger of the two, and (due to a lump of considerable size) I had a biopsy done on about three years ago. (The doctors told me that it wasn't cancerous at the time, but it could become cancer in as little as a few months, or never at all. Luckily, they seem to have gotten practically all of it out during the procedure, so (for now) I don't have much to worry about.)

I hope you find the answers you're looking for, and I'll be keeping an eye on this thread either way!

It does sound like lactation. Since you have a family history, it's a good idea to save and go get it checked out.

Thanks for the insight. So, you're saying you too have had non-pregnancy-related fluid discharge from your breasts? Due to a large, albeit benign, tumor? I'm glad to hear it wasn't cancerous. That must have been a scary time.

I haven't felt any lumps or fleshy changes in my breasts, but if I do, money or no, I'm having it checked out thanks to your input.

Indeed when I have money to save, I shall. Currently, even with my boyfriend's paycheck to get most of the bills, I make minimum wage at part time, and have only a few dollars in my bank at the end of the month.

Honestly, I'm not sure the discharge is/was related to the lump at all. Only my right breast had anything noticable on the inside (even the doctor couldn't find anything wrong with the left), and yet they both "leaked". I always chalked it up to being just some random medical anomaly.

While I hope I didn't make you paranoid, I'm glad I could help, even if it was just knowing that you're not the only one out there experiencing this.
