IUD, STAHP! (Bleeding and spotting with Mirena)

Contributor: LoooveMonkey LoooveMonkey
I was spotting every couple days for a month after getting my mirena. It was a little bit annoying, but I put up with it. But then I got my first period after having it inserted and for two weeks, it just would NOT STOP and it was showing no sign of letting up. I got really irritated and decided to try to take some dong quai because I had some around that I used for something else and I had heard that it can stop a period if you need. It stopped right away, like magic! And I haven't even spotted at all since using it. I just take it twice a day like it says on the bottle and I have been for about 5 days. I'll try to go off of it when I feel safer about it not coming back and I'll let you know how that goes. The only side effect I've noticed is I get even more freakishly wet than usual when I'm turned on. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, I guess.

I can't believe that no one else ever mentioned this, but it's a great thing. I figured I'd share. If you try this, please let us know how it works for you.

Update: I was able to stop taking the herb after a week and a half without the bleeding coming back. I had to use it again when I got my next period. Thank goodness I figured this out.

I did what you seemed to for several months. I got mine over summer and I would spot all month then have like a 7-8 day period (mine off birth control pills years ago used to be about 5 days, on birth control pills before the mirena it was about three days long).

I was pissed off. What about that disappearing period everyone kept talking about huh???

But now it's like six months later and I still have fairly heavy periods but the spotting has stopped and the periods are getting gradually lighter and lighter.

Honestly the herb might just be interrupting what your body has to figure out on its own. I've also heard that if you have way more bleeding than usual, it can mean there's a problem with how its inserted (it doesn't necessarily have to hurt for there to be a problem).

I would probably stop medicating and go see a dr to check on its positioning, and then see if it doesn't level out gradually on its own. if it doesn't, then mirena probably isn't the birth control method for you.

I did go to a doctor because I was concerned. They said it was positioned perfectly well and I had nothing to worry about. And I just needed to ride out this stupid stuff because I'd like it better later. That's why I'm self medicating.

Also I bleed much less than normal. Just, like so many other people who get a Mirena, it doesn't want to quit.

I have actually been doing great lately. No more cramps and no more spotting. The only problem is that I have had a little bit of acne on my back. That's a small price to pay, I think.

Theres law suits going on right now against Mirena. I had a friend who just had to have her mirena taken out because it was moving and coming out.

I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I know doctors say about 1 in 10 women stop having periods completely on Mirena. I was that 1 in 10. I haven't had a period in 3 years which is great.

IUDs cause different things in everyone though. As long as your doctor thinks its healthy and in place then it seems like you are doing the right thing.

I have known people who had their Mirena come out, but most doctors will replace it if that happens.
